  • Disney’s been on a rollercoaster lately, announcing grand theme park projects only to quietly cancel them months or even years later. Over the last ten years, we’ve counted over a dozen projects suffering this fate.

They do this to spike the stock price so they can “honestly” say the stock is on an upswing during the call. For whatever reason the institutional investors never seem to question it. "Attraction future", that's a line that'll ring a bell for Disneyland Paris fans. There is this 1992 park map of Euro Disneyland by Sam MC Kim and Stev Cargile. On it we've got the following "future attractions"...
    - The Little Mermaid attraction
    - Beauty and the Beast attraction
    - Discovery Mountain complex
    - Indiana Jones temple complex
Of these four only two only partially became reality...
    - Discovery Mountain: only the rollercoaster Space Mountain and the Nautilus walkthrough happened, Journey to Centre of the Earth and the Nautilus restaurant did not
    - Indiana Jones temple: the dark ride did not happen nor the envisioned rollercoaster, but a initially temporary smaller rollercoaster was build called Temple of Peril (sibling of Tokyo's Raging Spirits), which currently is on its last legs.

To my knowledge there is no other themepark behaves like Disney. Announcing stuff only to cancel it feels a bit insulting. It implies that the average Disney themepark fan is satisfied from mere announcements.
The worst part is that it seems that Disney is punching below its weightclass. Disney themeparks are the most attended and one of the most expensive parks worldwide. @kevinbhieey9188 Před měsícem +2

Announcements as Research is exactly what Disney is doing. Because they've discovered that far too many of its projects aren't exciting people. For every Cosmic Rewind, there's a Ratatouille AND a Soaring Over the World. For every Mission Breakout, there's a WEB Slingers AND an Emotional Whirlwind. For every Radiator Springs Racers, there's a Luigi's Flying Tires and then a Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters. Not that everything is bad, but Runaway Railway isn't exactly setting the world on fire and there's gotta be excitement about new things if you want people in your park.
Part of the problem is that people are just getting tired of all the retheming. Mission Breakout is great, but it's not a new ride. Frozen Ever After is not a new ride. Even new rides that share the same ride system - Ratatouille, Runaway Railway, Rise of the Resistance and Rollickin' Roadsters (so many R's!) - all start feeling like the same ride with different paint.
That's why all these announcements with nebulous concept art. Because most of what's coming up with is NOT new and people are hating these attractions in advance. Tiana's Bayou Adventure is the zenith of this but it's not the only case. Moana in AK got the hate mostly because it was obviously an IP that didn't work with the park, but also because it was clearly a rethemed TriceratopSpin and what looked like an underthemed Splash Mountain (in reality, it was an underthemed Shanghai Pirates). Zootopia was hated for taking over a ride system nobody felt fit with the franchise. The DCA Avengers ride was originally going to be Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and when people hated that, it looks like now it's going to be... the Indiana Jones ride system! Imagineering used to create great rides that worked with their theme. Now all they're allowed to do is force themes onto already existing ride systems.
The biggest problem here is Disney concept art is selling IPs and not the rides. Moana, Zootopia and the Avengers are beloved IPs, but Disney is so averse to spending actual money, they'd rather pull these IPs out of consideration than give people the high-quality (expensive) rides they want. That's why I think Encanto keeps getting moved about. Nobody has figured out what it's going to be, so it hasn't gotten the hate, so it's so far survived most of the Public Research phase. Tiana's and AK Indy came out the other side of the Public Research phase bruised and bloody, which is why we're getting all these behind the scenes details now. These are definitely happening, and they are not happy they have to okay so much defense. That's not usually how it works for Disney.
Iger won't shut up about a Pandora West, so it's on the front burner as well. The release of concept art might explain why we keep hearing about it, but no longer anything about Coco or Moana. The Shanghai Pirates idea has clearly transferred to this new land, with the boat ride looking almost exactly like it did in the Moana art. James Cameron is also on record saying he'll create a Way of Water film for the Flight of Passage ride system, so Coco is probably in search of a new idea. Sad that the person pushing Disney to create new experiences doesn't even work for them.
I can't wait to see the fallout of they try to sell Cars Land Lite or another Toy Story Land, as some rumormongers are insisting. I've also got the popcorn ready for when they FINALLY spill actual info about this Villains Land they've been hinting at for two decades. This D23 is going to set the stage for the next decade and I can't wait to see whether we get something fresh or another batch of Iger retreads.

Hey Reviewtyme, I personally think one of their biggest mistakes, which is connected to their overarching current era of mistakes and failures cramming IP into everything without really delivering on any real classic rides, is with Future World in Epcot. Their insistence to remove any and all of the educational attractions is a very sad missed opportunity to turn a family vacation into something of real value. They absolutely needed to renovate and upgrade all over that area, but they really should’ve just doubled down on the attractions being educational and futuristic. Universal announced a brand new theme park, Epic Universe, in 2019. It is set to open in 2025. 6 YEARS. And it would have been ready is less time but the pandemic delayed construction.

We had a chance to get the responsible adults installed on the Disney board, but the touchy-feely people put "want" ahead of "need" so there will be no reasonable budgets. Disney has a laundry list of problems. Right now, they need to stop losing money. All the parks need expansions and bigger attractions to create pull factors so 3 rides that everyone wants to go on doesn't have either a 3 hour wait, or you dont get to ride it because of a stupid fast pass system that stops people from riding the rides they pay to go to the park for. Magic Kingdom does need a lot of love. But the other parks are rough. Epcot has a need for many more attractions and updating..the futuristic park. As for Animal Kingdom and Hollywood studios...they need the most help. I wont pay to go to Hollywood studios anymore, its a complete ripoff and isnt worth anywhere near the price. Animal Kingdom is nice to see animals, but again, 2 big attractions are the only pull factor. Everest never has a wait because its not great and the river ride you get soaked. A bugs life was nevwr really that big of an IP and Dinosaur is an absolute joke. Its a terrible ride that you basically see nothing. Not to mention your trown around like a rag doll for nothing. Ive gone to Disney many many times and IMO all the parks are way overpriced. However, the only parks you should consider if your going is Magic Kingdom and Epcot. Those are the only 2 you can spend all day and at least feel like you got something for the money you paid.

It would make sense to have a Hawaii or Alaska-themed section, since they were territories at the end of the 19th century, then cars are truly a thing of the 50's with the creation of the interstate system.
