Pope John Paul II visit Singapore 1986 (Part 4)

The first-ever visit to Singapore by a Catholic pope was by John Paul II on 20 November 1986. During his brief stop in Singapore, Pope John Paul II met the Singapore president and prime minister, and conducted mass which was attended by about 70,000 people at the National Stadium. The five-hour visit at the invitation of then President Wee Kim Wee was part of the 66-year-old pontiff’s Asia-Pacific tour, which included visits to Bangladesh, Singapore, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia and the Seychelles. Also head of state of the Vatican, the world’s smallest nation, the pontiff was accompanied by senior Vatican officials and an international press corps.
