Join us this week as we set our gear aside on the table and compare and review and compare our favorite line of reels, the VAN STAAL! My first one was the VSX and shortly after I bought 4 of the VR Series. The latest addition to VAN STAAL one up is the the VSX2 50 size and the VSXB 200 size. I don't get to do this often as I fish these reels every week and have for the last 5 years.

Hi, what would you recommend for plugging and jigging surf. Great video!
I typically jig with a big R&R flair hawk (Aspirin head) works great for tarpon has a huge 10/0 hook. Great for snook as well. A First Light flair hawk works good also. For the surf I’ll fish 1 and 1/2 oz up 2oz. For popping I use a YoZuri big mag popper. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏽👊🏽don’t forget to subscribe 🙌🏽
Excellent review. I live in Jersey & come down to Florida several times a year and stay at a friends home that's located in Lauderdale which has a residential canal in the rear. I do a lot of fishing in Jersey also and will be purchasing my first Van Staal reel (VS X2) which I plan on traveling with. Any recommendations?

What size reel would you compare the x2 200 with?? Is it the same size as a 8k twin power for example??

have you had issues with the vsx 150 drag? like i know they claim "30" lb but lets be honest even when that reel is locked down its only 10lb. do you know if the vsx2 has that issue with its new drag washers?
No issues with the drag, it’s just hard to lock down. The drag knob is hard to grip… I just upgraded the knob. VS states 30 but it’s more like 20-22 ish. I’ve checked it. I’ve serviced it regularly and had updated drag washers installed. The new one is much better, I fought a 100 plus poon I’m it and got spooled but it behaved well considering.
@@ChasingFloridaa weird I got the upgraded drag knob and my has trouble fighting anything haha feels like a trout reel with its weak drag.

How do you compare the vr125 in size? 2000 3000 4000 5000 looking for something small not to big. Thanks
VR125 is about a 4-5K the VR50 is like at 3k-4

Hey Brother! I live in North Eastern Florida (Jacksonville/St. Augustine) and I do alot of inshore fishing. What size rod would you recommend for a VR50?
It’s a great reel for inshore, I use it for snook, reds, snapper and other inshore species. If you are fishing heavy current and larger fish I’d go to the 150-200 size. I use the 150 for larger snook and for large tarpon the 200 size.

@@Saltlife2182 lite to medium fast action. I’m running an St. Croix avid inshore. I’ll switch depending on what I’m doing.

@@Saltlife2182 if I’m on the boat 7’6” if I’m on the shore 8’-9’ better for the casting.
Do you feel the Van Staal VS X2 Bailed 200 is worth the $950 price tag?
After fishing it for sometime and having it on the star rod I have it on I think it’s been good so far. It is smoother than the others and the bail on these reels is what you expect on a reel of that price. Heavy wire and overbuilt like I like them.
Appreciate the reply back. I have a VR175 and VR200. I do a lot of surf fishing in the OBX and want to pick up another surf rod and reel. I think I’ll make the jump on the new one. I want Silver but they only have black.
@@njdinolover1170 Have you considered bailess for the surf? I fish a VSX 150 in the surf and Jetty’s, and it works well. If you do go for a bailess Van Stall go for the VSX2 the new one piece design is great for throwing the rod and reel in the sand. The old ones would separate over time. I love my VR’s fish them on the boat all the time.
I thought about bailess but always fears about cutting my finger with the braid line. How long did it take for the learning curve on that type of reel?
@@njdinolover1170 Well going back to when I learned not long, about a good ten times out with the reel I became pretty proficient with it. Cutting doesn’t happen under normal casting. That being said you can buy a surf caster glove that covers your index finger or just use gaff tape even a bandaid in a pinch.

@@TJ-hd5ym I have a few 🤣 Also have some old staals made in the US. They all work the same and well the latest VSX2 is the best so really it’s a moot point now. Reels are still warrantied here in the US.
Where can I buy a Vann staal 150?
Plenty of online places to get them where are you located? I got mine at the Bite Me Bait Shack in the Homestead area.

@@Yousdan_305 Yes, you can buy them. My VSX 150 has the standard T handle. The other reels are VSX2 50 and 200 size those come with the power knob.
Find something better to do - the fisherman catches the fish not the reel .
