The Secret of Monkey Island is a classic point-and-click adventure game for the PC where the player explores a fictional version of the Caribbean. The protagonist, Guybrush Threepwood, is a young, determined fellow who stumbles his way through his adventures but, ultimately, everything turns out alright in the end! At the beginning of his journey he introduces himself by expressing “I wanna be a pirate!”
This arrangement draws its influence from reggae and Cuban music, as evidenced in the son clave rhythm. Percussion is heavily featured to create a mysterious, foreboding atmosphere, especially when the ruthless antagonist, Captain LeChuck, has his theme in the spotlight. As the story goes, LeChuck was so deeply driven by his obsession with the heroine, Elaine, he traveled to Monkey Island to prove his devotion…and met his untimely demise. Despite the spooky nature of an undead pirate captain, his music also has a hint of whimsy behind it. Bombastic drum patterns and punchy brass lines make for a surprisingly catchy theme song for such a foul villain. The adventurous nature of the game is best portrayed in the main theme, which plays at the beginning and very end of this arrangement. All instrumental sections have moments in the spotlight, whether it be through subtle leitmotifs or expressive “noodling” found in the woodwinds.
So, what exactly is this big “secret” of monkey island? We invite the audience to draw their own conclusion!
