    As a preschool teacher, THANK YOU for starting by talking about the readiness element! Some parents really push kids towards reading before they show any natural interest, and forcing it too early can make some children think that they hate reading! Following their interests and cues and thoughtfully selecting books are really two of the most important early steps.

    Also, as a specialist, let me tell parents who may be concerned about slow or delayed readers- kids absolutely take reading at their own pace and there’s no need to compare, but also don’t be afraid to get a specialist’s opinion. There might be something else going on, like dyslexia or a decoding issue that can be tackled, but it’d be difficult for the kiddo to go through without support.

    The timing is so important, I learned to read at age 4, by the time I started kindergarten at age 5, I'd read the newspaper. When my son turned 5 and he wasn't willing to give reading a try, I got worried and tried to push him but didn't work. He's now 6 and he just started to get curious about reading (he's great with numbers). I need to constantly remind myself that he has his own process and rate of progress.

    My oldest daughter due to her autism and ADHD, she always had a hard time reading. She showed interest but would get frustrated with herself because she was never at the level of the kids around her. But just keep at it and find what works for your kid. I found reading for a few minutes at a time worker far better for her than trying to finish a whole book.

    My daughter was very much like Tess. She is a bit of a perfectionist and so she just did not enjoy the struggle of early reading. We definitely did some Bob books and some other early readers. I am a librarian and one thing I have noticed is that level readers can really really vary. My first readers are great
    because they're perfect for brand new readers but often a level one can be a challenge for new readers, some level ones are very challenging.

    • @WhatsUpMOMS
      @WhatsUpMOMS  Před 2 lety +1

      Ah!! You bring up such an interesting point I didn't even think about it-- it definitely had to do with being a perfectionist (oh jeez, she probably got it from me). She really didn't want to read until she knew she could do it well... And yes, I agree, you have to be ready for level 1's, they can be tricky! Thank you so much for this thoughtful note!! xoxo Elle

I remember the day the crayons quit, it was my favorite book ever. These books were still hard for me to read though and I hatted when someone corrected me on a word, but at the same time I wish that people just told me what it was on some other words, and you can't ever tell witch one it is. This may make it hard for you as a parent, but Tess is a grate kid and very smart just like you so I hope you both will figure it out. best wishes!

    Just want to add a quick note about reading; if you’re child still doesn’t really like to thought of reading when they are a bit older or they are still having a bit of a hard time with some words after repeating them after quite a bit. Make sure to monitor them as they could be dyslexic (these are the signs my parents noticed when I was younger). And don’t worry dyslexia is not as scary is it might sound/seem I promise as someone with dyslexia. But the earlier you can catch some signs of it the better! Again not here to be a downer or to scare anyone just thought this might be helpful to some.

He only knows his ABC’s and easy 2-4 letter words (I.E. dog, it, small) I actually played a big part in his ABC learning, when I saw him I told him to try and read the signs, and what letters were on them. He has lots of the “my first reading” books and used to LOVE paw patrol and I read it to him and let him read the small words. I hope my aunt works harder because it’s NOT my responsibility, but I mean someone has to, even if it’s a 12-year-old.

    Some kids are just like that. My little brother tended to go from zero to 100 with a lot of his skils. He went from refusing to use the potty at all for a really long time to using it perfectly as soon as he started. at four, one day, he just read out the headline to the newspaper article my dad was reading perfectly. He was one of those kids who refused to show others a skill until he knew he had it down so there was a lot of worry about him developing slowly until we realized that.

      That's AMAZING!!!! We definitely needed the peer pressure of Kindergarten... but limiting the TV is so clutch... if they are bored enough, right? Ha. Thanks so much for watching! xoxo Elle

    Tess is reading so well! 💖 You have to teach your Kid to read at home in the US? They don't learn that at school?

    Okay when I was 9 I could barely read a second grade book I was in third grade you have to understand Tess was a better reader than me when she was five I'm 11 now and I can finally read at 5th grade level but more of a fourth grade level but I'm still going considerate a fifth grade level but good job with teaching your child it's not because I didn't want to read it's just because I couldn't my office went ADHD affected my reading so much that I basically couldn't do it at all so I got this amazing teacher named Mrs Sullivan she helped me so much also I love your videos also I think what would be a good book for Tess is dog man one two and three they're hard covers so they're a little bit more expensive but I think it would be worth it it's way introduced her to a lot longer words but it's still at that level where they can read most of the book without any help
