This is one of the first pieces of classical music that I ever heard. In the 1950s, when I was growing up, children’s records had children’s music on one side, and classical music on side two or side B. So, I would play my Little Golden Record, until I was tired of it; then I would turn it over and almost reluctantly play the classical piece recorded there. This is how I first heard Mozart’s, Turkish March. 70+ years later, I am still captivated by Mozart’s genius.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart[a][b] (27 January 1756 - 5 December 1791) was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical period. Despite his short life, his rapid pace of composition resulted in more than 800 works representing virtually every Western classical genre of his time. Many of these compositions are acknowledged as pinnacles of the symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral repertoire. Mozart is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music,[1] with his music admired for its "melodic beauty, its formal elegance and its richness of harmony and texture".[2]

The Turkish influence on western music came through the Turkish military band music (Mehter), which was at the time was the only military band in Europe. ... That's why theTurkish-influenced music works by Mozart, Beethoven or Strauss are in march ritm as they are called march.
To clarify some confusion in the comments, it's called Turkish March, because it is composed in the style of Turkish Music. Not to be confused with music made by Turks, Turkish Music in this context is an early style of classical music made by Europeans, inspired by Turkish military bands. After the Treaty of Karlowitz between Austria and the Ottomans, Ottoman Sultan sent an army band and other performers to Vienna for the celebration of peace. Austrian court was really impressed by the music they played. Especially after Poland got a military band sent by the Sultan as a gift in the 1720s, every other major European Country got a military band in the same veins to not to be outdone. Then it jumped to classical music from military bands. Turkish Music in this context has the connotations of "eastern" and "military". It generally used extra percussion instruments to a standard orchestra(by standard I mean for those times) like a bass drum, triangle, and cymbals. Turkish style is always lively in tempo, and almost always a march. Mozart himself titled it "Alla Turca" because it is an imitation of Ottoman Jannisary bands. But you should be wary that it is what European imagination or idea of what Turkish music is, if you compare it with an actual march from a jannissary band of the time, the similarities are superficial imo, like the very lively tempo, but that's it. To start with, this is a piece for piano, Jannisarry bands had no similar instrument to it. They consisted of wind instruments and percussion, no string instruments. So here, Mozart is trying to imitate a type of music that's been shaped and changed by European minds and understanding of it for at least half a century. Nonetheless, it still is beautiful. Mozart be cultural appropriating before it was cool. :P
Great explanation. Thank you. I don't why but I always thought that Mozart got paid by the sultan to compose this masterpiece. It seems like a total different story.
Mozart admired the culture of the Ottoman empire. He loved the Mehter march very much. That's why he composed this march. The rhythms of rondo alla turca are the same as the mehter march.

Ronald Brautigam played it elegantly, one of the best performances out there, for sure. He didn't play it to show off, he intended to make it sound beautiful, and it worked.

Turkish March Beethoven (part of Op. 113 No. 4): Die Ruinen von Athen (The Ruins of Athens)

Mozart:
I had this song stuck in my head for months and now I finally know the name of this song
Oh yes what a splendid piece. I do recall this being played at Lord Poshingtons party 🧐
Nice music. I don't understand why peaople hate turks, i'm from Poland, "SO MUCH CATHOLIC ULTRAZEALOT COUNTY AGH!" and everybody hate there arabic peapole, but like turks. Ottoman Empire don't accept the anexion of Poland in 1789, Poles make Legions in Turkey to get independence in 1920. Greetings to Turks from Poland, remember, other religion don't make us an enemies ;)
I'm from Macedonia which land was part of Ottoman Empire and those people like ottomans were not humans, rather said they were savages, with radical religion view, killing and torturing people like animals...
We don't hate them because religion, but because culture and medieval mentality...People just can't forget that history coz it's too fresh, Balkan Peninsula was under occupation till 1913. Just because them, Balkan it is demoted.
Makedonid94 get over it. Nobody from back then is still alive so you have no reason to be cranky.
Makedonid94 if yoy religion is survive now it gas inly reason... and this is Ottomans. I am a Turk and i know that orur enemies loves us. Cos they know we r brave and have honour and know that Turks are only fights in the battlefields. You must not think we r like arabics
Very true my dear Polish friend. I must admit that the Ottoman empire was sometimes very cruel but so was every empire and kingdoms of that time.
Greetings from Turkey!
Greetings :D
