Tejashree Amonkar sings Raag Shuddha Kalyan
An evening melody with a distinct feeling of calm and bliss, this raga creates a mood of sweet anticipation. With a pentatonic ascent reminiscent of Oriental music and a descent which admits all notes, this raga is characterized by smooth glides (glissandi) on the natural seventh and augmented fourth note in the descent. The first melody, a traditional composition, is presented in a slow tempo of 16 beat cycles:
Eri maai piyaa aave more mandarvaa, karahu mana basa
(Oh - my beloved shall visit me in my abode, and I will fulfil all his heart’s desires!)
Palkan dagar buhaaru ri, kab aave rang rasa
(I sweep the path with my eye; to await his arrival.)
After the lyrics have been sung in their entirety, the performer unfolds the contours of the raga through improvisation. The note patterns become increasingly intricate, showing the raga in all its splendour. This is followed by a composition of the legendary Kishori Amonkar, set to a fast cycle of 16 beats:
Lagi lagan mohe shyaam salone
I am in love with you, O handsome Krishna (the dark one)
Kaise bisaaru pyaare balama?
How can I ever forget you, O my beloved?
This melody is marked by fast note runs and comes to a climax at conclusion.

Raga Shuddha Kalyan

TEJASHREE AMONKAR Hindustani Vocalist
Groomed and nurtured since the tender age of three by her grandmother, the legendary Hindustani diva Gaanasaraswati Kishori Amonkar, Tejashree is a fast-rising star among the ranks of the younger set of Hindustani classical artists and represents the third generation of vocalists within the same family.
Gifted with a sweet and fulsome tone, Tejashree has imbibed first-hand the aesthetics and vocal technique of Kishori Amonkar, along with the structured unfoldment of ragas so typical of the Jaipur-Atrauli style. She is also fortunate to have received extensive guidance from her great grandmother, the illustrious Mogubai Kurdikar. Tejashree performed in public for the first time in 2005. For ten years until Kishori Amonkar’s departure in April 2017, Tejashree accompanied her grandmother as vocal support during performances throughout India.
Tejashree holds an advance diploma in fashion technology and is an accomplished Latin ballroom dancer. She believes that her rigorous training in music has flowed through to her other creative pursuits.
Tejashree is accompanied here on tabla by Yati Bhagwat and on harmonium by Siddhesh Bicholkar. Both Yati and Siddhesh are much sought after accompanists to leading young performers of Indian classical music.

This performance was a part of KALYANI, a festival dedicated to women in Indian art presented by In Harmony Arts & Culture on January 18th 2020 at Asia Society Hong Kong Center.
This musical masterpiece by Tejashree is truly exceptional! Her talent is immensely underrated, and I yearn for more of her enchanting music. She deserves heightened recognition within the industry, as what she presents is nothing short of pure gold - divine and unparalleled. A true descendant of the Kishori Amonkar gharana, her musical prowess is evident and deserving of wider acknowledgment.

It so refreshing like rushing water brushed by the wind. We are so thankful to have Tejashree & Raghunandan (Panshikar) to carry on the Raag Darshan of Kishoritai. The Soul of Music pervades through this worship of Raag Shuddha Kalyan. Pure humbleness, pure humanity, no ego, just a devotee of music. I would expect nothing less from students of Kishori Amonkar. Keep the simplicity alive! That is music's greatness.
