You mentioned that on corners the wheels have to be able to shift so that the difference in radius of the conical wheels allows the outside wheel to travel a longer distance. I had wondered how trains get away with having a solid axle and this makes sense. In Sydney, on the North Shore line, there is a station on a fairly tight curve called Wollstonecraft. The tracks appear to have some kind of lubricant applied to them. I wonder if because the trains are going at a low speed and stopping at the station they need the lubricant to make up for the trains not shifting to the outside as they would at speed.
From my experience lubricators are fitted in areas where rail wear, or RCF, is high, to help reduce it. This will be from the friction or forces of the wheel. This would be the driver. It has also been known for lubrication to work a little too well and affect trains braking ability!
The Blix Tunnel between Oslo and Ski part of the Follo Line has hunting ocilation and Bane Nor is currently fixing the rails. According to an article they have considered widening the gauge from 1435mm to 1437mm, but I am unsure as to what the fix is.
