  • Some Travel Photography in the Big Sur area of California on this episode.
    Check out my photos of Big Sur and beyond on my IG channel @brendanvanson.
    Travel photography is always fun. But, it doesn't always go off without a hitch. We left San Francisco this morning and headed down the coast of California. I wanted to spend the whole day taking pictures and shooting video. However, I was having issues with my drone, and we got rained on a bit. But, eventually we made it down to Big Sur; on of my favourite locations for photography in California.
    I didn't get to do a lot of photography in Big Sur the last time I was here, so I was looking forward to getting some photos. There were massive storms last time I was around, and I spent my time avoiding bad weather rather than chasing light. This time, though, was different.
    Down at the famous bridge in Big Sur, we got some beautiful light and made the most of a sunset travel photography shoot.
    Then, I headed to McWay Falls to shoot some star photography at one of the best locations in Big Sur.
    Tomorrow here on the photography channel, we're headed farther south along the Pacific Coast Highway. It should be epic!

      And: good for you, trying to shoot the M falls in the dark. You'd never been there but you used your imagination to set up shots to get the falls, coast and stars. That's thinking outside the box!

      The best part of star photography is that no one knows if you have sensor spots. haha

    Nice shots. I almost fell off one of those cliffs a few years back when I was out taking photo's just like you. I stepped back onto a small ridge lost my balance and then almost fell right over so close. Anyway It is so beautiful out here. Love living here. thanks for visiting.

    Great show of having to think on your feet. Not always run ,set up and thats the shot. So many times, you see an edited version making it look easy.

      +Ralph Goldsmith the perfect place! And, yes, get out and give star photography a shot. It can be frustrating at first, but once you get the hang of it it's so rewarding.

    Ahh the Bixby Bridge rode my motorcycle across that bridge many times. Memories. Thanks Brendan.
    Are you staying with Sony or have you considered what you friend Thomas Heaton did and get a 200D/SL2 that is something I'm considering it when I finally get paid from my November and December gigs.
    Loving the Nor Cal and Central California videos I have been up and down the coastal route a few times my favorite ride of California.
    Cheers.
    I haven't seen any spots on my a6000 (yet, yikes I hope not) but I do notice the front lens is a fingerprint magnet.

    Brandon - do you still have drone issues? You just need enable developer mode and USB debugging and the Pixel 2 works great.

    Just brought a 2nd hand Ipad Mini 4 to fly the Mavic with, works perfect with the DJI app and it's so quick. This is the 1st Apple product I have brought and I am so impressed with it I am thinking of changing the PC to a Imac 27".

    Brendan, drones are ALLOWED in CA state parks (unless specifically stated at that particular park). That sign is not correct!

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  Před 6 lety

      +Wrecks really?? The sign states drones aren't allowed anywhere in the state park. Really wish the laws and rules were more consistantly enforced.

    I JUST GOT THE PIXEL 2 XL TOO. and found out the hard way a few days ago that I can't use my phantom 4 pro. If you mess with it enough though I got it to connect. had to update the P4p via my girlfriends iPhone

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  Před 6 lety

      So, you got it to work in the long run? Does it work consistently?

    • @memkills
      @memkills Před 6 lety

      Brendan van Son if you enable developer mode and search settings for "usb" and goto "select USB configuration" plug in the drone controller, then open the app then go back to that setting and just select MTP ( Media Transfer Protocol). This makes the phone re-check to see if there is a device connected via USB. If it doesn't work at first I just unplug it all and try again a few times until it does work. Not reliable but, yea.

    • @dangriffey1659
      @dangriffey1659 Před 6 lety

      Brendan van Son works every time for me, once you have enabled USB debugging in developed mode. Google it.

    How do you get that scratch on the sensor Brendan? I’m using Sony and i would like to avoid that issue

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  Před 6 lety +2

      +brotonel alex don't change a lens in a sand storm haha. Sony gear is actually really bad for sensor spots. Amazing what that mirror blocks. I get sensor spots even without changing lenses on my Sony gear.

    • @brotonelalex1278
      @brotonelalex1278 Před 6 lety

      Brendan van Son yeah i noticed that. It’s easy to have dust on a Sony and i’m afraid that I’m going to have a scratch. Haha Luckily i haven’t changed entirely from Canon to a Sony. I still have my 6D and 5d mark iii :) the problem with Canon is that they have left us with the innovations

  • @JohnRavolta
    @JohnRavolta Před 6 lety

    Why did you use the 16-35, instead of your 14mm @2.8? Composition just didnt work?

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  Před 6 lety +1

      14mm was too wide. Made the waterfall look tiny. Also, the protruding lens was catching some of the moonlight leading to some lens flare.

    • @JohnRavolta

      Brendan van Son ah yes that is one of the struggles of a travel photographer. I'd love to go on this trip those coasts look amazing. I live in the netherlands as you may remember but it is my dream to emigrate to California I think it is one of the best and most beautifull places to live.

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  Před 6 lety +1

      As I've mentioned a couple times, it's actually a scratch on the sensor. And, I can't afford to replace that camera right now. May do soon, though.

      Didn't colour grade the Sony Camera footage. Daily vlogging is a mission, sometimes you have to sacrifice. I was up until 3am trying to get this online. I decided to sacrifice the colour grade. But, to be honest, that's one thing I'm trying to work on improving in the future. So, thanks for watching and your input!
