  • (6 Oct 1960) Lagos racecourse was the scene, and it was the afternoon of Nigeria's great day with thousands awaiting the climax. Princess Alexandra, with Sir James Robertson (the retiring Governor General), must have enjoyed the whole jubilant atmosphere of the occasion. It was as the representative of Her Majesty the Queen that Princess Alexandra of Kent returned in the evening to hand over Nigeria's constitution to the Federal Prime Minister, Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. Next day came the State Opening of Parliament. Dr Azikiwe, President of the Senate and Governor-General Designate addressed the Princess, asking her to open Parliament by reading The Speech from the Throne.

First republic politicians had no clue about how to build a viable nation.
With no ideas about what to do, they simply used the country's wealth to give themselves luxurious life, leaving the country to drift.
Successive Administration followed the same pattern, and the country has been drifting since independence.
Oil wealth gave citizens a false sense security, even though there has never been strategic thinking and plans for the future.
Spiraling oil price has unraveled our lack of sustainable economic strategy. Till now, there is still no structure in place to diversify the economy, create economic opportunities, and arrest further descent into insecurity and chaos. Nigeria is already a failed State because of her clueless leaders

These footage and others should be stored in our national archives if we have one. They prepared us to govern ourselves someday. We don't look for the best of the best regardless of tribe and prepare for the reins of government. Mediocre, sycophants, nonentities, fraudsters, etc, are the hallmarks our government and politics.

Nigeria has never had a communist or socialist government while most of its neighbors had a communist or socialist government mainly it was German colony before WW1 in which Germany was the home to Karl Marx. Which is probably why Nigeria is a mostly religious country in its entire post British colonial rule.

Nigeria is still a tribal country. Any Nigerian identifies primarily as a Yoruba, Housa,, or whatever, and Nigerian second. The Biafran War was all about the treatment of Igbo's outside their traditional territory. They took to education avidly when it was offered and may have been smarter than the average Nigerian. They routinely won the civil service exams but found it difficult to do the jobs in some cases and were attacked in the streets. Their traditional territory was the one rich in oil, which Nigeria needed and wanted. Nigeria needed the Igbo territory more than the Igbo's needed the rest of Nigeria. The rest is history! Since then the original four states have split into 37 or more. It would take a collaborative effort of many states to successfully launch a new war against the federal government.
Another big problem, I think, is that the north of Nigeria is Muslim and the south generally Christian. How is that going in Europe these days, and how does anyone expect it to work in Nigeria. I think we know the answers

If Putin stay in power 20 years they call him 'Russian leader'
But if Mugabe stay in 20 years in power, he is 'Zimbabwean Dictator'
If they conscript black people for sale and forced labour without pay, they call themselves 'slave traders'
But if you hunt antelope in the bush for food, then you are 'animal poachers'
Traders and poachers, who sounds like a criminal.

In the general election which gave birth to our independence, NCNC came first;followed by AG. NPC came a distant third. It was a hung parliament. The leaders of NCNC under the leadership of Azikiwe felt more comfortable forging an alliance with NPC instead of AG under the leadership of Awolowo. That error of judgement and grandstanding compromised the objective of the independence struggle. We are yet to learn any lesson. We think more of ourselves than Nigeria. We must stop blaming the British and face reality.
