How to choose the best pickup: A guide to all Veena artistes

  • Welcome back! This video will (hopefully) act as the guide I never had for various pickups used by musicians across the globe and how they apply to the veena.
    Some disclaimers:
    Use headphones to get the best sound experience.
    All volume levels are matched to the best of my knowledge and no effects have been added to enhance the sound.
    The idea of the "best pickup" is subjective. You can choose what you think makes your instrument sound the best. Rest, strive for mastery over gimmicks to make your playing stand out.
    I am grateful to my mother and guru, Smt. NVS Radha, who has always encouraged me to experiment. This video is based on our combined experience as musicians.
    I am also grateful to Shri. Baba Prasad, my audio guru, at whose studio (Digi Sound Studio, Chennai) we shot this video.

    Well done, Shoshanna.
    One super useful addition to this video would be a baseline 30 seconds of playing, without any pickups.
    Additionally, what was your conclusion in regards to which pickup was the most suitable to your taste?

      Watch this for the original veena tone.
      Honestly, that depends on the audience I am catering to. I love my raw veena sound. So I can go with a simple condenser microphone or nothing at all if ambience supports.

  • @venkatasureshbabuvenna9021

    Thank you Sashank for sharing valuable information. Kindly let me know the make of the pickup used by Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh madam (hope that you can easily identify simply by seeing her video).

    • @veer810
      @veer810 Před 6 měsíci

      I've tried to find out about Jayanthi ma'am's pickup since a long time.... no clue........
      No one else uses it, so it is probably custom made or imported
      Also, I have seen the same pickup in one of her guru - Dr. S. Balachander sir's old recordings, so she probably got it from him.
      And the pickup also does not have a normal jack output port, it has those vintage screw-one style ones so it is probably very old.

    As a Non-Veena player, I observe there is quite a difference in the outcome, subject to the pick-up being used. Would like to know which pickup is closer to the original sound of Veena? Also, could you please upload the full version of Paluke Bangaramayena?

    • @veer810
      @veer810 Před 6 měsíci

      using a vibration pickup would give you the most original sound. But a good quality magnetic pickup can also do it.
