- The hardware is an arc by monome.org. The Arc is a USB device consisting of four high resolution encoders, each surrounded by 64 variable brightness LEDs. It is no longer made. I have no association with monome.org.
I created the software which can be downloaded at: github.com/stretta/gridlab.I publish a great deal of my work at github, all of which you can freely download. I am not a company and I'm not trying to sell you something.
Thank you for watching the video (from 2017). I create these videos because I like to share the things I make. If you want to know more about me and what I do, please read the About section at the top of / stretta - Hudba
Hello, thank you for watching! Please read the description before commenting.
This is beautiful man, elegant is the right word I think. Also, you don't need to respond to the haters, the rest of us get it 🙂
bro it got recommended to me a bit late lol. i would buy it if i could
okay i'll check it out now!
Wow, as a drummer and the son of a jazz drummer, what I like about this is the random beats, just when I start to figure out a pattern, it evolves. very cool.
more comments more people will see this in their recommendations :)
This is exactly what a dj in a 1960’s sci fi movie set in 2024 would use
It does look quite 60s sci fi! I’ve seen so much new tech these days that has gone back to tactile input and it all looks so retro futuristic I love it
a chopped amen break would go crazy on this
Somebody make it happen and tag me
@@debnlinda Has someone done it?
ah shiz what is amen break like dont be too proud to say ok thank

It's beautiful watching these rhythms cycle round.
6 years ago, and so mesmerizing to see and to use, how is it today ?
If you're referring to the hardware, I use it daily. I have lots of knobby-encoder boxes like the PC12 and the Twister, mostly when I'm looking for a 1:1 mapping of knob per function. For all other encoder operations, I prefer the precision and flexibility of the Arc. If you're referring to the software demonstrated in the video, I usually develop something, perform with it, and move on to the next item on my endless list of application ideas to explore.
i'm referring to both of them , is it on the market or just your own development for personal usage ? @@stretta
Cool, displays Predator language too
Take your upvote and fuck off
@@futureshocked r/angryupvote, but it's on CZcams
Predator is into drum & bass but we wanted jungle.
Danny Glover likes this... 👍🏽
@@diracflux can't accept drum and bass, we need jungle i'm afraid.
A very nice and original interface.
Agreed! Creative stuff, stretta!
Hi. Just wow, your design completely blew me away. I consult extensively on user experience and design of various sorts. I occasionally lecture on the subject, and would love to be able to use your video. We usually teach that truly intuitive is a noble but entirely unreachable goal, but one we still strive to approach. Your design makes me question that. Thanks for sharing.
this is so badass! would have loved to get my hands on one of these and make a sick pseudo random (sounding) arpeggiator
I have spent more time making my own instantly expressive instruments with M4L/Ableton and my midi setup lately. I have found your channel at the perfect time. I get a lot of ideas from you page; thanks for sharing. Cheers!
This is a really neat idea for a drum machine and the physical implementation of it is done really well. The machining looks great and the LED arrays (I think thats what they are) are spot on. It's all very aesthetically pleasing, minimalistic but very functional
This is like a hardware version of the drum sequencer on the Reason Figure app on iOS.
This is amazing!! I can totally see it being used both live as well as in the studio to then chop it up or cut a measure out to make a loop
Nothing has made me want an Arc controller until right now. Holy crap, this is beautiful.
Wow, I pretty much love this. It's beautiful, and lovely to watch for sure.
Just found your videos and they’re amazing. Keep up the good work!
This looks really fun to play with! Thanks for posting.
I absolutely love the idea and the way it executed.
No one's mentioned Propellerheads Figure app?
Was just about to but then read your comment. Such an amazing app that makes it easy for anyone to create some pretty cool beats even without musical talent.
One of the best producing tool out there, been using for years and its features/functions are so simple and unique
To busy taking California
FACTS (similar sound also)
does that even still exist ? damn that was the wankest thing id ever used ngl
Well!
It's too bad this is no longer made, I would absolutely love to have one, it fits me so perfectly.
I wouldn't use it with drum sounds though, I'd use tonic sound, instant polymeter is what I'd have. (At the most basic of implementation.)
i love unorthodox musical interfaces like this. good stuff
I would have no idea how to use this effectively, but it’s awesome.
Can this be operated without Ableton Live? Any other DAWs or software/hardware synths work with this? Thanks in advance!
Rad. Best mini active controller I've seen. I I watch altogether to many videos
Absolutely beautiful method.
What a beautiful piece of technology!
A fantastic tool for finding inspiration for interesting rhythms. What I would love is an addition of a mode that only allows RPMs that will guarantee a line will also fall into the 16th grid and trigger a sound. I find it usfuel for improvisation that lines don't always trigger sounds, but it might be frustrating if you try something specific, but the lines just won't trigger sounds, like a snare that hits every rotation, but sometimes it doesn't, might be too confusing.
Uber Cool , nice to see your vids again
This is what the future of music look like 👍🏻 absolutely perfect 🤩
This is the most innovative midi device I've ever seen
This looks so intuitive! I want one, one day!
this thing is so cool! I could probably play with it all day.
This is RIDICULOUSLY GOOD!
In terms of UI this is one of the coolest machines I've ever seen and it could have practical uses once mastered but as for an average producer, this is super impractical lol. Though sometimes, some of the best music is impractical...all in all, I would buy this 100x over.
What a wonderfully whimsical machine. I could watch those LEDs chase all day! (though mild autism certainly helps)
Wow nice. It takes euclidean circles to another level.
Really interesting thing, I like concept of generation of music, and cool that pattern is visualized
this is so beautiful! Impressive !!
i just loved watching the lines tbh
dude this is the coolest thing that i've ever seen in my entire life
This is porbably one of the coolest things iv ever seen.
This is beautiful!
Hello! I really like the interface and this interesting control scheme. I had a question about the density control. I'm curious exactly how the dial is manipulated to generate the rhythm. You said it was not random, and I struggled to parse through the documents on your github to find my answer . So I'm curious still about how exactly the input works, like if you're pressing top down on the dial, if it's reading tactile input on the sides, or just reading the rotation change, or if there's a joystick like input component? Then also, what's determining the placement of the notes as the density is increased? For example, could I subdivide the 360 degrees of measure with exactly "n" equidistant notes, and how?
Thank you, and thank you for continuing to share.
What a great user interface! Lovely!
It looks really nice, complex and confusing. Minimal commands. Great design too.
this is awesome. could it send triggers or CV to analog devices?
I don't understand if the knobs really physically rotate or not and if they do, do they get slower over time or is there a motor that keeps them at the same speed?
What a beautiful machine!
Did you make a euclidean sequencer Max for Live object??
Beautiful interface
Great app! U can even emulate this with gridlock and lemur, not like having the real arcs, but still veeery satisfactory =)
awesome. would love to see how this can be used to create melody or rhythm with a synth patch
This is 100% something I could see Aphex Twin use for a liveset
i would unironically buy something like this
May not be the most intuitive, but damn its mesmerizing to watch.
What gave you the design inspiration to create this device this way? How did you learn how to make things like this?
Amazing concept!
This is beautiful
Super cool!! I'd buy one!!
That must be a lot of fun to play with - 👍
This is pretty awesome
Impressive work
Great looking device.
this was 6 years ago. are you still using the same hardware? was there a newer or different model that you might recommend? either way, thanks for sharing this software!
If you can record the tempo changes, that is gold brother.
I do miss basic measure programming....but man that is very interesting.
This looks like how a sci-fi Dj would be like
One Video, Instant Sub. Hyper creative.
could there be a way to adjust the interval so you can have more than every 16th note play, or even remove the note alignment requirement alltogether?
Neat. Aesthetically pleasing. Daft Punk would have loved this
Amazing
I wish I could get my hands on one
Incredible 😍
Great concept!
wait so the dempo can be changed on eath of them so that poly rythems and that are un even patterns???
I love this dude. I've been waiting to see a video on something with this concept.
so cool its like the mandachord
Really cool project
captain, this is awesome!
This is so cool!
The generator also generates different note velocities, right?
in "some way" yes, u can. You got static and mappable velo.
I feel really dumb, but how do you change/add the pattern and then start it? To me it just looks like you're rotating the dial
This thing is super cool
i want to get my hands on this how do i buy it and is it able to be runned on reaper the softwere im using for making music
This is so cool, I want one
Would love to hear an unquantised version!
you wouldnt
It would just be various tracks each at a different BPM, an uninteresting out-of-tune mess.
this is really cool
why would the YT algorithm tease me with something so fucking cool from 6 years ago 😭
super cool!
I can't stop staring at it!
I like the simplicity of it, but I like to go below the waves!
Idk why this was recommended to me but I think that I need one
Great video!
Brilliant!
really interesting, thanks for the share.
Very useful for IDM 😎
What a great device to own…
Very creative
You could feed that midi into some synth that can alternate between different sounds each time a note is triggered like Korg Wavestate - it has a VST version with some free demo option
Really pretty
So from what I'm gathering after watching this is that spinning the knob controls both the density and playing speed? How will the knob know which you're trying to control? Seems finnicky, or maybe there's some nuance which wasn't explained in the video. Either way, interesting concept.
Amazing !
Very cool interface...
