  • So I posted a clip of this video on IG the other day and over 200 of you guys wanted me to upload this! So this is a quick re-potting of my root-bound Monstera deliciosa - aka my SPLIT LEAF! I made for fun last year but I'll have you know my Monstera is thriving almost a year later and has since been propagated many times! Peep my Instagram for recent photos of it.
    Also - propagation, would you be interested in learning more about it? Let me know in the comments below!

    I would definitely recommend using a moss pole instead of a bare plastic or wood pole. It gives the aerial roots something to attach to and you won't need to use twine.

    • @Splitleaf
      @Splitleaf  Před 6 lety +11

      I considered that for sure, but I've put it into a corner with a trellis so it's starting to climb the wall! :)

    • @mzzkeely
      @mzzkeely Před 5 lety +14

      Vines will dig into bare wall if they feel like it. But usually monstera will just lean upon things once they get bigger, the more support they get, the bigger the leaves and longer the vines. The more sun they get, the more splits they develop. No moss poles required.

    • @espem88
      @espem88 Před 5 lety +9

      Also when watering from above, the moss holds moisture so the plant (which loves humidity) is attracted to the pole and the moss provides extra humidity which is helpful if you live in a dryer climate zone.

    Mine is 40 yeas old. I used.to provide a moss trellis, but it has it's own stalk now and multiple babies. I untangle the roots in the root ball , so I don't break off the roots belonging to the babies.
    Most young babies the roots are about 2 feet long.
    Total above roots plant is
    6 feet by 6 feet... a monster.
    It summers on a north facing covered porch. Winters inside when nights hit 50 degrees. It has been really happy since I added it's own light above. I no longer have the south facing bay window that it never left

    Hi! I think if you add a moss pole and let new aerial roots cling to it, it will really take off climbing! It's a gorgeous plant! Mine started shooting out a long vine (about 8 feet now) which is suspended with hooks and twine along the wall up to my ceiling now, but I'm going to get a tall post and add moss/mesh to it so that it can get even more momentum. Happy plant tending! 😀

    • @Splitleaf
      @Splitleaf  Před 6 lety +1

      It's climbing up a wall currently! But I have considered the moss poll if I move it or it starts leaning. That plant sounds absolutely STUNNING, and your plan sounds spectacular!

      I am so curious as to hold d your plants are! ? My monetera was gjven to me by a friend, bc it was getting too tall, lopsided, &kept tipping over. Annyway, I have had it for 2 years, &in that time it has produced one healthy "pup", which I separated lasr suummer &it is doing quite well.. The mama plant has only grown 2 additional leaves- that's 1 leaf per year! :( ..it goes outside for the summer &is now getting plenty of indirect light btwn a window &my grow lights... I just watched Gardening with Douentza, who was re-potting a 35yr monstera, which waa not particularly that much bigger than yours.. It seems like a slow growing plant, but then I see/hear how big yours (the two of you) are.. Any tips/ secrets? Or Are they just really old?

    I got a monstera back in January and it was already way to root bound but I was nervous to repot it. I waited till yesterday and I’ve never regretted anything more. Trying to detangle the roots took so long bc I was trying not to have to cut much off. I was hoping to separate one of the plants because there’s so many individual plants in there but there was not a chance in hell that any of them were gunna separate completely 😅
    It looks great in its new pot but I also wish I’d gone up another inch or even 2 in pot size.

    I love that pot you're going to put it in! I have three monsteras that I'm going to need two separate and repot. I'm going to try to resell a few of them so thanks for showing this video I appreciate it so much. Maybe that's the next one L make for my station a repotting video of three of them!! I do have to do a potting up video of bought orchids I just bought 7 orchids in the past week five were rescue orchids one especially was a rescue I know it would have ended up in the trash and I put it back and then I had to come back for it. And two of them are orchids I didn't have I have over 30. And I just started collecting them since November... It wasn't that I started out to collect it's just that that's how many I have now but it might be closer to 40 with the new ones. I always put them in new bark and a new clay pot with the slits in the side made for orchids. Please come to my new CZcams station and tell me what you think of my videos I have a few posted a couple on my orchids and some of my houseplants just a tiny bit of houseplants and my coleus collection. I put all my coleus together the baby ones with the parent ones another one's I wintered over and the other ones all came from cuttings late winter early spring so there's probably over a hundred of them takes me forever to water everything. Anyhow my CZcams Channel's name is Kathleen Murphy just add orchids for coleus to the search engine and you'll find me. Please click subscribe and hopefully like and please please please leave me a comment tell me what you think I'd appreciate anybody who would come and tell me what I could do to improve I love your videos I've been a member for a long time probably since back in November so I don't know

    I love what you said about no right or wrong way as long as you're plants happy I just said that an hour ago just somebody else when there's a controversy one way or the other as long as you've been successful doing it your way versus someone else's way then keep on doing it that way. I mix half peat moss I think it's the generic brand at Lowe's and it has some fertilizer added to it it's not the great big deal and I only use that because I can't find the Coco peat stuff that's kind of on the environment so I use have potting soil Miracle-Gro or the generic brand at Lowe's and if I have old bark for my orchids I put that in if I have old potting soil I mix that in I just bought for the first time worm castings I'm going to start adding that and I did add some Miracle-Gro organic pellets like osmocote kind of thing just some of the first things I bought it up this spring early summer and they're doing really really well. After I water my orchids I soak them in water with my nutrients their orchid fertilizer some Epsom salts some seaweed fertilizer that has lots of hormones in it and I just found Cal Mag to add because Rick of Rick's orchids on CZcams says orchids are calcium Hogs so I just added that for the first time today when I watered my orchids. Anyhow after I water my orchids and they soak for a half hour or so in that nutrient solution I then take that water the Orchid leftovers I say and all my other plants get the leftovers. My house plants look better than they ever have. So come to my CZcams channel and tell me what you think someday maybe I'll have a hundred subscribers and you have like over 7,000 wow that's a lot of hard work sweetie

      Fertilizing once a month is waaaay to much. Only fertilize once or twice a year depending on height and age of the plant. I water mine about once every ten days (150ml of distilled water, in summer every week 150 ml, all depending on height). Don’t forget to spray the plant all year round about twice a week. Swiffer the leaves off once a week and once a month wipe them down carefully with a wet wipe.

    How do you water all your house plants? Deep water? When I do mine to my indoor plants it takes forever for the soil to dry and I’m using succulent cactus soil mixed with perlite. The struggle is real on drying out soil. Haha

    What do you do when it starts to get taller from climbing up the support? Do you have to add a longer support? Would you remove the first one of keep it in place with the addition of a taller support?

    • @Splitleaf
      @Splitleaf  Před 2 lety

      I remove it and add a new support but you can buy some moss poles on amazon or etsy i’ve seen that can add extensions to it! I typically try to remove the smaller one entirely, just need to be careful if the roots have grabbed onto the moss pole :)

      @@Splitleaf Thank you for your answer. I just bought a stake yesterday and I hope that it helps because my monstera is all over the place and needs some support. It is growing a few aerial roots because it really needs some more support.

  • @laxgrltlc311
    @laxgrltlc311 Před 4 lety +1

    thanks for this video!!
    I am a little confused about where new leaves can grow from.. if you have one plant (one main stem with multiple nodes/roots and leaves), new leaves just grow out of the stem of the newest leaf. If you are propagating and you cut the plant into sections, each with a stem/leaf and node or root, and then try to propagate the cuttings, is it possible for new leaves to grow from all the cuttings, or only a cutting containing the plant's newest leaf? And if you take a cutting from a mother plant and the cutting contains the newest stem, node, and leaf, can that mother plant still produce new leaves? Sorry if this is confusing I'm new to all of this! Thank you!!

    • @Splitleaf
      @Splitleaf  Před 4 lety +2

      Samantha Braver as long as there is a node it doesn’t matter where you take the cutting from, newer growth spots tend to work better just because it’s already in a growing stage so it roots faster but not significantly! And the mother plant will continue to grow, they tend to find a new spot to force a new leaf out, so no worries there :)
