I was lucky enough to see this on a big screen (edited to add... meaning in a movie theater) It warped me very similarly to being strapped to a chair with devices holding my eyelids open being forced to watch brainwashing visuals... (like the Stanley Kubrick "A Clockwork Orange" movie). Very wonderful.
The protagonist of that use Kai who you showed wasn’t bad after all It has a complex story about being bullied and being so insecure about your body, that guy didn’t even exit from his own room when his parent’s died. And when i got reincarnated in another body , in rare occasions his mind projected his souls as his real naked body. The grown up version, and he was disgusted from his body because he has only bad memories about that

How can anyone think the Akira soundtrack is 'forgettable'? Made me question reviewers worth and doubt the relevance of every other part of his criticism, even though I agreed with most of it, the convoluted story compressed from a hefty manga, the dissappearing side characters etc. To me, it's up there with the Blade Runner soundtrack.

Anime would not be what it is today if it wasn't for Akira. At least in the USA. (in germany we had successfull anime since the 70s.. altough they werent advertised as such) Comparing anime can be a lot like comparing a good book with a comic strip on your daily newspaper... and this is the one great book that made me start reading books. (or rather specific books.. what made me start looking for anime was "Nadia - The secret of blue water" in the 90s

Berserk golden age the new one is definitely worth, Berserk: The Golden Age Arc - Memorial Edition, this one is good start, it shows the beginning, but other animation are not so good unfortunately
I think the story of akira was mostly forgettable But it is pretty ambitious and impressive visually especially for its time Its worth watching even if just because its a classic movie
