This breaks my heart into a million pieces. The beauty and skill and culture and connection to nature…and our capacity to destroy it all. God have mercy on us. Thank you for helping me process huge emotions at this moment in our history. With love from Australia ❤️
For you all enjoying this music and wondering about its roots, the instrument is called Tanbour. It has several variations in Iran, Turkey, and Azerbaycan. This particular type of Tanbur and the music belong to the western Kurdish regions of Iran. The music has religious roots and is widely played in religious ceremonies and rituals.
If you are from the western hemisphere and find this music familiar and good sounding while still mysterious and mystical, no surprise. Tanbour is different from other eastern instruments for it only has tones and semi-tones while other eastern instruments have quarter tones too.
Quarter tones may sound dissonant to most modern western ears. But believe me, the more you listen to it, the more familiar it becomes and when you finally get it, it will open many doors to the beauty and mystery of eastern music.
well said sir
Saying music has religous roots is like saying food is for eating. Only certain modern music isn't done for religious purposes. That's why it lacks soul.
Do you know what type of strings they use? Seems to have banjo qualities when played high and an almost piano like tone on the lower end. Love to hear one played with a slide.
@@albertgoldsteinberg991 Thank you sir
@@escaramujo I think the analysis of the relationship between music and religion may take a great deal of effort. They have benefited from each other throughout history for sure, but one may argue that music goes way more back than any religion.

When the sound of Tanbour is heard
The bewildered heart becomes enchained
A lover’s voice hidden in its strings, sings:
Become timeless, and come along with me
~ Rumi (free translation)
I couldn’t find this letter in the internet.
@@emreackaln2662 If you mean my translation; it is in a non literal form, for example, the last line really is "liberate yourself and come with me" ; Since the liberation is really being liberated form the mind and ego which happens in a state of timelessness, I put become timeless which really happens when you are paying attention to something. The other translators may put it differently; I put it based on my understanding. In addition the name of song is Hozur meaning being present at here and now ; and that also happens in a state of timelessness. In any case, the quatrain itself that I meant follows in the original Persian: (Robaei 52 - Shams Collection)
طنبور چو تن تن برآرد به نوا
زنجیر در آن شود دل بیسر و پا
زیرا که نهان در زهش آواز کسی
میگوید او که جسته همراه بیا
I hope I could help and thank you for your interaction. :)
Only Mevlana could add beauty to this music with words because it is already so impossibly beautiful ❤
Not once did I ever think I would be headbanging to a Tanbur, yet here we are.
Likewise, brother. Likewise
and people say culture is dead.
i actually suggest everyone to check out "seyed khalil alinejad" as @azeri bulbul just mentioned, ppl has been head banging to Tanbour for a long time.
Don't be ashamed
I knew i couldn’t be the only one
One of the best Persian Tanbur performances, I have ever heard! Spectacular
If I didn't see him play I'd swear that is at least three people playing that song.
because of quarter tones sounds like dissonant
That finger picking techinque is blowing my mind. What an incredible display of musicianship, this is hauntingly beautiful

Now, more than ever, the world needs to see the strings that bind all humans heart-to-heart.

This song feels like all the passion and chaos in the world held within an orb of serenity. It all resolves into stillness. Astonishingly beautiful.
