- How to use a backing drone note to practice and improve musical pitch, ear / interval training, playing ability and much much more!
This can be used and applied for any instrument, vocals, even percussion.
I am using a Turkish short necked Baglama saz / "Kisa Sap"for this particular demonstration tuned : (Aa, gg, Ddd) over a Drone track in A. I will give examples with various other instruments in the following videos of this lesson series.
Part 2 will be available soon.

wow thanks for making this video. Very insightful.
Beautiful, so well explained video; so useful
Thank You, great video ! Keep it moving forward....
I’m learning to play the cello, and for some reason I’m having a very difficult time learning to effectively use drones during my practices. This is actually very helpful. I feel like I can at least identify an “A” now because you’ve helped me to associate a certain feeling/mood with it. I’m hopeful I can manage something similar with other notes with practice and a lot of patience. Praying for patience. Lol
After a handful of trumpet lessons when I was 11 or 12, I've recently gotten back to studying the horn.... 60 years later! Starting to read music a bit better and my tone is decent. And I'm not wasting a lot of time blindly focusing on conquering the upper register. Can hit a high C, and I've squeaked out a D on occasion, but I don't own it yet. Unfortunately, I'm a little weak on maintaining perfect rhythm, and I’m also not doing too well on quickly recognizing individual notes. I think working with a drone will help... at least with the note recognition thing.
Saw a video a while back by Ingrid Jensen, a terrific Canadian jazz trumpeter. But she was primarily talking about drones in helping to find harmony. Your video on the benefits of working with drones is a deeper dive. So it looks like I'll be using a drone during most, if not all, of my practice sessions. Thanks!
Is there a 2nd part to this video?
