The great lie of the Universal Christ

  • The universal Christ is a term that has crept into churches, particularly with former evangelical Christians deconstructing and embracing this new theology. Here’s the thing though it's not new, it's old, and it resembles nothing of Jesus Christ. Watch the video to learn more.

Sounds like just another way of resisting God as an external authority. God is God, and people are not. Admittedly this was difficult and took some time for me accept myself. To accept the Creator as an authority in your life is in fact a radically different world view, I know this first hand. But since I converted I have realized how people think. They just don't want to be accountable so they make things up to get around it.

When people state that they don't believe in a God that would punish them, they take no accountability for their sins or their choices. God gives us free will and it is they who are choosing to reject him thus choosing eternity away from God, away from all that is good, righteous and holy. This place where God is not, is basically Hell, devoid of Love and everything that God's presence provides. It's easier to deny the real God then give up their sinful way of life, so they justify their sin with an ideology that allows them to live in sin. It will be terrifying to realize the consequences of how they chose to exercise their free will when it's too late. Amplified Bible 2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine and accurate instruction [that challenges them with God’s truth]; but wanting to have their ears tickled [with something pleasing], they will accumulate for themselves [many] teachers [one after another, chosen] to satisfy their own desires and to support the errors they hold, and will turn their ears away from the truth and will wander off into myths and man-made fictions [and will accept the unacceptable].

@@babatunde7576 Conventional Christianity teaches that "The Good News" is that the messiah has risen. There is never any mention of the Old Testament origin of The Good News which can be found in Numbers chapter 14. The Good News was the report from Joshua and Caleb that encouraged the people to take possession of the promised land because God is on their side and no one can stand against them. The grumbling of the other spies is what caused God to punish the people to wander in the desert for 40 years. Only Joshua and Caleb were allowed to enter the promised land after the others had died.
That's not to say we should discount the 'good report' from others that the messiah died and has risen. But history and context matter. It's important to know that the history of the Israelites to our current day is part of a single, continuous plan that has recurring themes which will culminate in the ushering in of The Kingdom. I think a believer should understand their history better, and it should start with considering the viewpoint that the Jews were not replaced by the christians as the chosen people of God. Understanding the original report of The Good News as the encouraging and faithful position of Joshua and Caleb in the book of Numbers is a good example.

The above shows just why Christians need to sort out exactly what it takes to be saved. Ever since the time of Paul, when Christianity began to form and pull away from its Jewish roots, believers have been brawling over who represents the true Christian and who is the wolf in sheep's clothing. In fact, even within mainstream orthodoxy, these finger pointings occur - between Catholics and Protestants and Orthodox, between Calvinists and Arminians, between Trinitarians and anti-Trinitarians, and so on.
Clearly the bible is as clear as mud on this supposed important issue, and what it takes to be saved goes far wider than just an application of John 3:16.

That's where Jesus comes in. Being truly one with God and giving everyone the holy spirit so they can also be with him and be one with him. We can't beat sin on our own *(I've tried and failed miserably),* however the holy spirit gives us the power to do so. By the way, you're not getting into heaven unless either have *it* or have a perfect track record, and the ladder is impossible unless you died before you got the chance to sin.

Mat 24:9-14
23 Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand. 26 So, if they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Mat 24:23-27
1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. 4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error. 1 John 4:1-6
Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. 11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 1 John 5:10-12
22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he made to us[e]-eternal life. 1 John 2:22-25

Unfortunately for Protestants, these attacks on Richard Rohr show how heterodox and disconnected Protestantism is from the first millennium of Christianity. Although I do think Rohr sometimes gets dangerously close to Nestoriansim, still, the idea of a universal Christ is so common to early Christianity. Saint Maximus the Confessor wrote endlessly about how Christ exists in all things and that his incarnation transformed creation. He argued that everything, especially humans, true nature was Christ (Logoi) which is given through grace and that the act of becoming oneself was to become like Christ. There are so many early Christian writers who demonstrate this like Dionysus the Areopagite, Saint Symoen the New Theologian, and Gregory Palamas. Its manily Origen and Augustine who take the view, that Western Christianity took up, that the world is so fallen and God is very separated from the world due to this fall. Instead of calling him New Age, actually do some research into early Christianity and you will be very surprised at how different it is from the protestant and catholic forms of Christianity today.

In this view the chair isn't Christ because somehow Christ in only chair, but the chair has a logoi or purpose, and each of these logoi finally find their place within Christ. Even you and I have a logoi which finds its place in Christ and the mission of all things is to achieve their logoi. The goal of the logoi is to be miniature instantiations of the logos, which is Christ. So we aren't Christ, but our logoi is in communion with Christ and it beckons us to him.

Pantheism which is pretty prevalent in new age thought however removes God from the throne in your example, and equates Christ merely to consciousness; rather having knowledge of good and evil. It’s adversarial and in competition to God’s ultimate will. But even in God’s ultimate will, he allows for Himself to have an adversary in order to glorify His Son through producing overcomers.

Why are they even using the word "Christ" in the first place? Call it "weird spiritual super guru" or something. The Christ is the anointed, hebrew Meshiach, Messiah, w/e transliteration you wanna go with.
Cyrus was called Meshiach when he was anointed by God. The idea gained added significance in the minds of Jews during the intertestamental period, where there had been people anointed for a specific task, the Jews began to look for "the anointed one". A son of David who would come and conquer the world.
There's no evidence whatever that the term can just be applied haphazardously across the board, it's someone who's been anointed with a duty and role. There's no passivity to it.
I mean w/ that in mind you might make the argument, "yes and the Buddha and Muhammad were also anointed for spiritual tasks", but then the question becomes "well what task?" If they deny the fall and separation from God, why anoint spiritual leaders to bring us back? And maybe there's some argument to be made that the gentiles had spiritually anointed folks, there's plenty of people who read Paul's encounter w/ the transcription "to the unknown god" in Acts that way, but there's no room Biblically to equalize them w/ Jesus.
Either Jerusalem is a city on a hill or it's not. Either they're the nation of priests specially chosen as God's people or they're not. There's an exclusivity that's wrapped up in the whole of the Bible that can't be easily glossed over. But I know New Age people, because I used to run in those circles, they'll jump to the gnostic interpretation "The God of the Old Testament is not the same as the God that Jesus preaches, he came to show everyone they're wrong with all their rules and stuff."
That's a whole long debate, but fun fact on it if anyone's looking for quick counterarguments to gnosticism (I know this isn't directly relevant, but it's cool so I wanna share), my Hebrew teacher just told me this the other day: "In the beginning (bereshit) bara (created) Elohim (God)" those are the first words in Genesis, "in the beginning God created..." but interestingly, "bara" is only used with God, whether it's "Elohim" or the divine name (YHVH), but never with anyone else. We get words that are translated as created sometimes, but are not "bara" which debunks the gnostic notion that the God of the Old Testament is "the demiurge", a mere craftsman of the universe, subject to Sophia and some higher more abstract deity.
The gnostics grabbed hold of the Septuagint and missed these little details & just ran with it, creating new hooplah as they did.

@@JB-rg8si the Sophia thing is part of some gnostic sects, where the “Sophia” (wisdom) of God is a female deity that stands above the craftsman of the world, but even she is subject to a higher deity.
I appreciate the question! I got my MA in biblical and theological studies, but in just a short masters program you’ll only get a little general knowledge, so I just really recommend saying “okay who do scholars read?” And reading them.
Im forrtunate that the school I teach at has a Hebrew teacher who tutors me & my boss knows Greek pretty well, but since most people aren’t in that situation, you might want to find a course on Hebrew they have some online. But my teacher found something awesome that was a huge incentive - if you learn the top 100 words of the Bible in Hebrew then you have 50% of the content of the Old Testament, so you can get a LOT done in a relatively short time if you take that approach.
If you end up self-educating and are interested in Christian history, Eusebius church history, Josephus antiquities & wars of the Jews, geza vermes translation of the Dead Sea scrolls, the nag hammadi library, and lightfoot’s “the apostolic fathers” are nearly all of the primary sources we have.

Apply simple cause and effect and you reach the logical conclusion that Christ's Resurrection really happened. 2 men could hallucinate a resurrected man. Maybe even 3, although that would be a stretch. But 11 men, including Thomas who was just about the most sceptical person you could imagine? And that's not even counting the women who discovered the empty tomb or the 500 witnesses that Paul reported. The question is not whether Jesus rose from the dead. The question is, to quote Doctor N.T. Wright, what are you going to do about it? This is a question I've been struggling with because I have no logical reason to reject the Resurrection and I almost wish that I did.

@@tomnorton4277 I love what you've said here. I came to the conclusion that I'm going with Jesus when I used simple logic of what end I'd rather live with. If I serve Jesus and He exists, eternal heaven. If I serve Jesus and He doesn't exist, I still think I was a good person, just no drugs, alcohol, sleeping all over the place, etc. If I don't serve Jesus and He exists, eternal hell. If I don't serve Jesus and He doesn't exist, I just did whatever I wanted--and there's something about that option of doing whatever I wanted that doesn't sit right with me, simply because, what if everyone simply did whatever they wanted...good or bad...idk...

The number one problem with the "universal christ" is that it devalues Jesus' death and resurrection. It also ignores what Jesus said, that there is no way to God except through Him.

It's a mix between Christianity and all the SJW/intersectional woke nonsense that's going around right now. Use some Christian words, deny the divinity of Jesus Christ, practice Eastern philosophy. Rinse, repeat. It's not really a new heresy, but it's dangerous because it seems to be Christian to believers who are weak in faith or inexperienced.

@@alphaecho3875 They honestly don't really have "doctrines", it's somewhat antithetical to the movement. Doctrines would require study.
Their theology doesn't go much deeper than those "coexist" bumper stickers you see everywhere. They're secular humanists with a thin veneer of Christianity. They're very worried about fitting in with modern culture, which is where the problem starts. When you see people rejecting the Bible because it doesn't fit in with (X) cultural norm, you've found progressive Christianity.
