100% I’m just shocked that I heard Ren before we dived into REN’s Masterpieces these last few months. I remember having a conversation with the fellas on great rappers a year ago and I always mentioned that I came across this guy who is amazing but I couldn’t find him again. It’s so amazing to know it was Ren the entire time.

My teen years were spent rolling the Thai-green'
in the '90s the most common form of leaf cannabis in North Wales came from Thailand, or at least that's what it was called. Back then most cannabis round that area was resin, moroccan usually, but Thai green came in through Holyhead on Anglesey, which is near where Ren grew up. That's what that part was referencing.
THAT'S SO AWESOME KB - it was MG2 for me.
YEARS before Hi Ren, someone tweeted a video that was doing some modest numbers of "some guy rapping his ass off about capitalism" spliced over the big battle rap clip from 9 Mile.
I was like "wow, that's... impressive... " and went about my day and never thought about it again. I didn't listen to much rap at the time (read: ANY, for at least the past 20 years, and not much before then).
3 years or whatever later, I ran into Hi Ren a few months after its release. Still nothing sparked the memory of the funny video clip I'd seen, of course... but pretty quickly after Hi Ren, I found MG1 and it blew me away, which led to me diving into MG2 immediately.
... and my brain was all... uh... wtf is going on here, damn, I thought this guy was For Real...
because in the intervening years, my brain had gotten the memory confused. What I remembered was that *Eminem* had a *song* talking about sea shells and criticizing capitalism (he doesn't). So my brain went "damn, this Ren guy may have talent but I hate that he's ripping another artist's work off so badly, that's not cool."

It bothered me greatly.
... but I kept seeing reactions to MG2 on my feed, and I'd watch them and be all confused that *actual* rap fans - real serious *Eminem* fans among them - weren't cluing into this near-plagiarism I was picking up on. It didn't make any kind of sense that they wouldn't.
Finally, I spent an hour googling "Eminem she sells sea shells lyric" and watching a bunch of clips on CZcams of the various rap battles Eminem does in 9 Mile.
I recognized the setting of the one, immediately, and remembered that *that* was the setting of what I'd seen with the sea shells rap. When none of the lyrics matched, I was super confused and watched it a couple of times more.
... I went back to googling, and this time I saw a reference to the clip being used in a *meme,* and there was a link.
And there it was. The audio for MG2 spliced to the video of Eminem battle rapping in 9 Mile, and my brain offered me the memory of "you found this via Twitter" part.
My brain exploded, then melted.
I've never had ANYTHING like that happen to me before - such a catastrophic misfiring of my brain, I mean.
Anyway!
Isn't it weird to realize you'd found Ren before you actually found Ren, and not only that, but then failed to recognize him when you found him?
I often wish the meme had caught me a little more strongly, so that I went hunting for whoever the guy was who was doing the rapping, but... I was pretty un-curious about current music in general at the time I saw it, and rap especially.
😆 I’m a little embarrassed that I didn’t look deeper to find him again. It took me over 8 months of Reacting to Ren to realize he was the amazing Artist I seen that day. It just shows how versatile and Incredible he is in every aspect of Music. I love Ren. I’m so glad I found him without knowing I did. He has 🤯🤯 for a while now and I love every bit of it. He is truly one of a kind and to think we almost lost him and seeing his strength of overcoming it all is truly inspiring. I’m so proud of him and very proud to show him to everyone I can. Once in a Lifetime Artist that needs all the recognition in the world.
@@MyCatalog23 Finding Ren can be like an out-of-body experience, lol. I don't think we can be held responsible for the, like, disconnect? - not sure what to call it - we both had that prevented us from recognizing him. 😉
It just... man, I'd have given SO MUCH to already know about Ren before Hi Ren dropped. It would have been amazing to watch that release roll out & see the response.

The most important thing is the universe brought us back to him for us to witness this once in a lifetime brilliant Artist. On top of all that we got so much more music to explore with him. REN is the GOAT!

"Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!" said the head. For a moment or two the forest and all the other dimly appreciated places echoed with the parody of laughter. "You knew, didn't you? I'm part of you? Close, close, close! I'm the reason why it's no go? Why things are as they are?"
The laughter shivered again.
"Come now," said the Lord of the Flies. "Get back to the others and we'll forget the whole thing."
Simon's head wobbled. His eyes were half closed as though he were imitating the obscene thing on the stick. He knew that one of his times was coming on. The Lord of the Flies was expanding like a balloon.
"This is ridiculous. You know perfectly well you'll only meet me down there - so don't try to escape!"
Simon's body was arched and stiff. The Lord of the Flies spoke in the voice of a schoolmaster.
"This has gone quite far enough. My poor misguided child, do you think you know better than I do?"
There was a pause.
"I'm warning you. I'm going to get angry. D'you see? You're not wanted. Understand? We are going to have fun on this island. Understand? We are going to have fun on this island! So don't try it on, my poor misguided boy, or else -"
Simon found he was looking into a vast mouth. There was blackness within, a blackness that spread.
"- Or else," said the Lord of the Flies, "we shall do you? See? Jack and Roger and Maurice and Robert and Bill and Piggy and Ralph. Do you. See?"
Simon was inside the mouth. He fell down and lost consciousness.

In Animal Flow, Ren has a quote from the book "Animal Farm" on the wall. The symbolism in the book is about politics in Russia (and applicable to elsewhere) with farm animals at the characters. The pigs are some of the first to want to rise up against the farmer, but over time, become the oppressors. The 'rules' the animals had written out, including 'all animals are created equal' had overnight been changed to 'some animals are more equal than others'...confirming the pigs thought they were valid in trying to enforce their will on the rest of the farm animals.
