The Airin area of Nishinari, Osaka is known as the most dangerous area in Japan. I am from Osaka but even most Osakans do not get near the area. I wanted to learn more about the people and the situation in Airin, so here I am. Who knew I would meet the most warm people?

You're safe 😂 the homeless are neat with their trash. There is no graffiti and people are non-confrontational. Relax 🤣
Can you link the places like the 2 Restaurants and the vending machine, that we can find them on google maps =)?
Imagine being a tourist walking into the most dangerous place in a foreign country and finding out it's several times safer than the city you're from.
I know that already. Japan is one of the safest countries on earth
It's funny our money is more valuable than Japan now. B4 Japan's money was more valuable but because we got inflation and depression going on this is way affordable
They look happy, I hope they don't get over runned by tourists and all their vending machines and eateries become over priced. Then the police would come and chase all the locals away because it's now a tourist attraction. 😞
He didn't go out at night though.
@@jasonpurcellau lm sure it's still safe.
By Japanese standards it would feel dangerous, but by American standards, it would feel like being in the suburbs.
Yeah this place looks like a "good place to live" compared to 95% of the USA.
Ok, buddy, let's not exaggerate now.
Lol
This is nothing compares to Seattle downtown
@@isabirdisaplanethis ain’t anything admit that. I ain’t afraid of anyone down there bunch of softies
the fact that your camera didn't got stolen / rob in the instant already makes it "better" than streets in most other countries.
Exactly my thought. 😂
That slum looks a lot better than the streets of LA and more safer and cheaper.
Right? I noticed a lot of elderly men. They’ve probably been failed by the system in their elderly years or their families abandoned them for different reasons (ie. addiction).
@@karami8844 Not just elderly. You got some families on there too. It is just sad that the country would not build them a better box but is willing to put all kinds of sh!t into war. Like Trump said. Build a bunch of tents and beds and they will still be better off than right now.
I’ve never been to Japan. But if this is the “worse part of town”, then it must be a really great place in general. I’m saying this as an Icelandic person that grew up in Denmark and have also lived for two years in Amsterdam (2008-09). I then also lived in Berlin from 2014-19. The nice areas there are more “run down” than the place you went to 😆
Or trailer parks where maga folks live.
lived there for a month no drugs no begging for money no stealing lots of alcohol and cheerful people
LOL Ghib is like a Singaporean visiting Japan in this video.. he forgot he himself is Japanese.. when you started talking to them in English and replied in broken Japanese, that was so funny HAHAHA
And he purposely broke down his Japanese just to pretend. That is next level content creation.
He mentioned that he purposely did it because "sometimes it's better to be a foreigner"
@@b3rndvast3rthink we can relate more to the conversations in this way, haha. really genius.
@@sdarkpaladin oic, i guess its true also, he had master well to pretend as one
I was about to say lol
I stayed in Nishinari for 3 nights by myself (female) and then another week with my partner. There were homeless people and plenty of drinking but I never felt unsafe. I shopped at the same grocery store, was never bothered or harassed and even got a few smiles. In my 2 months in Japan this was an area I was fondest of and would definitely stay there again. A local told us this whole area has improved a lot over the last 10 years because of tourists coming in and some CZcamsrs showing a more positive side.
America totally different situation
Yeah that's how it is in East Asia. Sometimes poor neighborhood is even better when it comes to friendliness of people.
When the Slums in Japan look like a normal street in Paris.
Wasn't always like that.... I wonder what changed
@@Dwightpower88forced demographic changes through mass illegal immigration 😅
@@Dwightpower88 whites started moving in and blighting the neighborhood
Im an American and I have been in Paris, Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world!
@@antons2975 you think this way because your american lmaoo
When you are living way too long in Singapore and you forgotten that you are originally japanese. hahahahahahaha
Ghib has learn the Singaporean art of "Geh Siao" and "Act Blur Live Longer" 😂😂😂
He even sounds like he is intentionally speaking like it is not his native tongue!
cb step all dono japanese hahah
1300 yen is what these days.. about RM45.. I don't think you'd find a room for that even in Gua Musang.. 😁
What's "act Blur"?
Is that acting dumb/uninformed?
@@franktaylor7617 Yeah, that's pretty much it. My favorite variation of this is "blur like sotong", which I've never had explained to me satisfactorily.
I think Japanese have so much respect for others. Seeing how there were no trash bins, yet no litter, is amazing. At the top of my street is a community garbage can, and people still litter within 10 feet of it. It's crazy.
I'm so glad someone is finally giving this area a fair and non-dramatized view. As someone who spent a month in the area, I can say for certain that I will be back.
0:25 лол Украина и до них добралась

I lived there in the early 2000's, homeless everywhere, cheap food, Yakuza always floating around, smell of piss permiates the air and I LOVED the place, so much history and character. Never any issues, it's its own community and there's a sense of pride for those that arent homeless who have loived there their whole lives.
I just went there last month to visit with my family, first time back in over 20 years and surprised to see how much it has been cleaned up and kind of a tourist area.
Nishinari ku ROCK"S!
The best part of this well made video was the respect which you showed toward the people & their culture. Thank you for leaving preconceived biases behind.
I stayed in Nishinari-ku twice. And honestly, it feels much safer than my hometown. For around 700円 per night, with wi-fi, close access to station, and a small public onsen, it was incredible. Lots of cheap, tasty foods and shops too around too.
The only downside was, the walls are thin. Imagine trying to sleep at 3am and the person next door ripped out a loud, hearty, echoing fart. My sleepiness is immediately replaced with a mad attempt to hold my laughter in.
I've stayed in that area, I actually felt safe there and didn't feel as threatened as my own home town. Yes it can get dirty, and there's older rough people who hang around drinking and smoking all day, but aside from that, I'd go back lol.
Thank you for showing such an unfiltered view of Japan. Doesn't matter where you go they really are the most welcoming and kindhearted people in the world. Met so many Japanese from all different ages in different regions and once you break the language barrier they truly open up. Unforgettable experiences
I know. Very weird...
Even their trash piles are organized! 😄
That stereotypically sounds like Japan--> organized garbage piles...^^
Ghib becoming a tourist in his hometown is hilarious, I was smiling the moment the conversations happened with the locals. Good content and also an eye opener that a "slum" is this clean.
People who have the least are the friendliest and kindest. That's a universal rule.
The friendly peopple are so pure of heart .very geniune. And the posters telling ppl to be respectful shows how decent thay are ,there values wont be changed by wrong doing. ❤

Love this episode! Debunking the myth of Nishinari.
I was there couple of months ago, i knew i reached the 'skid row' of Japan when i saw a homeless man pissing on the sidewalk.
Other than that incident, It is still relatively clean and orderly. Tobita Sinchi the redlight district was right beside it and feels tidier than our Geylang.
Iv watched a lot of Japan eats food tours and this whole thing has just been S tier
Wish u talk longer with the people on the street, it’s alright to let the video run longer into hours with you interview the elderly. Kinda interested to listen to their stories like the one who used to work for Toshiba in overseas and how he ended up alone etc. We can learn a lot from them too. All life experiences are gold be it good or bad experience. And they seems happy to talk to you and don’t mind the filming.
Overall, great video, I enjoy watching another side of Japan that usually don’t show up on other main stream videos
yeah i thought that way too, i guess the encounter was too spontaneous😂 glad you enjoyed!
Having lived in San Francisco, this is like the nice parts and I'm not even exaggerating. I would have no qualms about walking through this neighborhood, the uncles hanging around the vending machines and shanties are way friendlier than their American equivalents that are pretty likely to meet you with a weapon if you approach their camp site.
Thank you for this! I really enjoyed your video & discoveries. I stayed in this general area 14 years ago for a week during my 1st trip to Osaka primarily because it's cheap & was aware of it being the supposed 'skid row' but discovered its full of heart & never once felt unsafe. It's one of my fondest memory of traveling in Japan. I even enjoyed several solitary walks from the city (once after a gig) back to my hotel at 2am 🤗 I'll definitely be back in this neighborhood if get back to Osaka again & will try out that 8am Izakaya!
I'm not surprised about them rejecting short stays. There are old men and strange people who live long term in hostels. So it makes it unwelcome for tourists.
Most homeless people are actually very nice humble folks, they’ve been through a lot and a little kindness goes a long way. Also, I hope those sauces on the walls weren’t mammal sauces.
No they are not. If none of your family and friends are willing to give you a place to stay you are probably an insufferable person
@@tootersshow5936 There are many homeless who don't contact their family and friends out of pride or simply don't want to burden them. Some are orphans and don't have anyone to rely on. Are you Christian?
I accidentally stayed near shim-immimiya without knowing, and at no point did I feel unsafe. I was young, and stupid at the time and walked through the area multiple times drunker than shit after midnight and I was totally fine. It was dirty and that’s it surprisingly, I never felt scared.
Been there, done it and only after wards think it was stupid. I think the young and stupid are sometimes tolerated but also nice to see them. I mean would an adult be mean to a 3 year old but probably you weren't worth mugging.
Really great piece on Nishinari. ありがとう!
I have been there (Nishinari) and stayed for 30 days (because it costs me only S$300 for the 30 days) and I share your experience. I would stay there again in the cheap hostel except for the bedbugs after my 10th night. But I'm now used to the bedbugs and they don't scare me now. But I take every precaution not to bring the bedbugs back with me to Singapore.
Welcome Back. Ah nice video.
Thank You for your nice video

Really enjoyed this episode. You are rediscovering Osaka as you are doing it for Singapore.
This one the quality is very good. Thanks.
An eye opening🤩🤩🤩 Awesome video! Thanks Ghib buddy🤗
This was a really interesting and insightful video. Thank for making it.
I lived in Nishinari for two months and walked around in those slums even at night. I think from a foreigner perspective it is the safest place I‘ve ever been to outside of japan. I‘m saying that as a foreigner but I think that those videos make that place bad and giving it a reputation that it doesn‘t have at all.
Admire your genuine take, appreciate the authenticity
Great video..well done!
Thank you for sharing about Airin, it seems like such an affordable and comfortable, cozy town. I'll include it in my bucket list for when i travel to Japan again next time!
Really interesting ghib...thanks
Thank you for this awesome video and respecting the people in Airin. Having a glimps of their lives helps understanding the less privilged japanese people in Osaka more.
Thanks for sharing this side of Japan!
🎉❤
you call that slum, till when you try going to Philippines.
thanks for sharing your experience sir :)
Great veido well shot and put together too. Those ppl are do darn nice i love it!
This was such a respectful and insightful video. Thank you for showing that even if you are poor it doesn't mean that you are dangerous. You were kind and caring to those you met and treated them like human beings- you didn't use this as an example to say bad things about a community. Keep up the good work!!
Thanks for sharing. 👏👏👏
Thnx for video 👍🏽😊 blessings from the UK 🇬🇧 I’ve enjoyed this video ❤
The mesaage from outro part is so impacful and it's also happen everywhere in the world. I didn't mean that being rich is something bad but this neighborhood feel so connected and warmth welcome. Anyway, as an Introverted, finding friend randomly on the street like you did can depleted my social energy for a month.
Thanks for sharing and showing us your many different experiences especially with other people. A few years ago I was most fortunate to be one of many guests of Mitsubishi for a week staying mostly in Tokyo this trip made a great impression upon me, I was amazed by the wonderful politeness of Japanese people not only to myself but also to each other. I remember thinking that it would be a wonderful experience to live there for a short time.
The 40 degree heat was difficult at times to cope with due to time deadlines that we had to stick to and I really made use of all the drink machines for water. I wish I could afford another visit but will just have to use my memory and enjoy that wonderful time. Love Japan❤️ from Robert in New Zealand 👋👋👋
loving the ryan trahan style of videos!
Love this video. Nice content
Beautiful video..
Looks a lot safer than Kensington!
I disagree. Kensington is one of the richest places in the world where homes often sell for £5m to £100m. The Price of Wales lives in Kensington in a palace.

This video has me in a whirlwind of emotions. But when you got to that hotel I lol so hard especially when you kept talking about the sauces on the wall. Loved this video ! It was different from other views of Japan videos and I learned something new😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
“Sauces”… in Las Vegas such splashes would be assumed to be bodily fluids (yuck!!) but in Japan, of course that is a sauce.

I wandered through this suburb on my last day in Osaka, it was great to see a real side of Japan
日本人はなかなか近づかない街だと思うので、こうやって動画で見られてよかったです。
Nice and rare to see a hotel room where it allows you to open windows. Stayed at a few where they jammed or locked the windows. Some research on the internet seems to indicate it is to stop people from committing suicide...
Good video ❤❤❤👍👍👍
Awesome video! (I have a feeling that there were vacancies in each of those hotels...)

Excellent video. The people seemed friendly.

I traveled to Japan for vacation since the late 80s, never have I been disturbed or accosted by the local, it’s always very fun to just walk around. But now Japan is too crowded, especially Tokyo and Osaka, will try to visit other parts of Japan.
Hokkaido is not crowded.

In Tokyo there’s a few ドヤ街 like Nishinari as well and tbh I think Nishinari looks a lot more fun 🤣 in 日本堤 near Minamisenju everyone was drunk from morning and just sad and depressed, saw many old men peeing on the streets early in the morning and it was just a really huge juxtaposition to the usual Kira Kira Tokyo areas lol.
Also spoke to the local policemen there and apparently the streets were only busy with the drunk men cos the ‘hotels’ would normally set a curfew after 10pm on weekdays, which meant weekends and public holidays were the only time they get to escape the tiny tiny rooms they have :(
I stayd in this part of Osaka last year and I loved it! Seriously, compared to any European major city, the most dangerous slum in Japan feels COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY SAFE. I never noticed anything strange during the week I lived in this area.
the dinner is actually normal price, in tokyo 400 for Nama is expensive, 250 for one beer still exist in many places
this area reminds me of yakuza games! very cool video thank you
