    Viserys story is actually very tragic. He was around 8 years old when the rebellion overthrew his family and he had to flee with his newborn sister onto a different continent. That alone must have taken a huge toll on a child. At first, he and Daenerys and the knight who protected them were welcome at rulers palaces and mansions. The last remants of Old Valyria and the dragon kings, they were seen as excotic and exciting. Some of those nobles undoubtedly also hoped that if they managed to reclaim their throne, then they would handsomely reward their benefactors.
    But with each year that passed, those lords and nobles became less interested in hosting two children with no money and no power. As it became more and more clear that Robert would hold onto the throne, they just became less interesting and more troublesome to their hosts. When the knight who protected them died of illness and servants stole the last of their money, they found themselves on the streets. Viserys quickly became known as the "beggar king" and even had to sell their mothers crown.
    So, yeah, I think its pretty unsurprising that he is obsessed, desperate and manic by the time the story begins.

      @fordhouse8b Před 3 měsíci +8

      Also, it is worth noting that their parents were brother and sister, as were their grandparents. Viserys and Daenerys grew up isolated from the Great Houses of Westeros, meaning there was basically no chance for any kind of marriage for either of them to any suitable matches from the high nobility of Westeros. Viserys (and probably also Daenerys) Likely thought that there was a good chance they would be husband and wife someday. This to some extent explains his creepy sexualized treatment of Daenerys, though it doesn't justify it. On some level he was probably deeply humiliated at feeling forced into giving his sister (his only family and his prospective wife) away as the bride of a Dothraki Khal.

    Slight correction on Aegon's conquest. He did not unify all 7 Kingdoms as Dorne kept resisting with guerilla like tactics, they even killed Meraxes one of the 3 conquring dragons along with Rhaenys, Aegon's sister-wife.
    It wasn't until way down the Targeryan line that one of the Kings used a marriage proposal to have a Dornish prince marry into his family. It wasn't until then that Dorne joined, but as their words say "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken" as they were not conquered.

      I also noticed an inaccuracy in Viserys' discussion of the Doom of Valyria. He refers to it as occurring "thousands of years ago", but it was in 114 BC (before Aegon's Conquest), so around a bit more than 412 years before the events in Season 1. (+/- a few years since they messed with ages a bit to age people up from the books)

    Man I was really hoping to hear another vantage of the "Sack of King's Landing" from Jaime's PoV. His nickname, Kingslayer, is a monicker that was assigned as a badge of shame and insult due to the going narrative of him stabbing the Mad King just out of sheer betrayal -- but we find out later in the show that there's more to this act of "betrayal" than meets the eye.

    I absolutely love these lore videos. It's really cool that they've got the actors to read for their houses but the fact that they are telling the story through their perspective is just amazing. You will hear the same story told in different ways depending on who is telling the story. I think thats pretty cool and a really nice touch.
    @Stef
    I ( and guess many others in the GoT community ) honestly say that I really appreciate you watching these vids. First, it shows that you are:
    1. genuinely interested in this world not just go through it as fast as you can but you want to immerse into it and properly understand the relations
    2. not afraid to admit that you were in a bit of deep water with it and that you are willing to use help to gain a stable footing
    It's admirable and the proper way to go about things ( and life in general ) and it will pay off. It adds a lot of context to the world, the people, their houses and it will help you with the characters and their motivations. Game of Thrones is an amazingly detailed fantasy world with a history of literally thousands of years. I mean House Stark is over 8000 years old and their values, their motivations, their view of the world all comes from their ancestry. Nobody think you are not intelligent enough understand things but it really is a lot. Lot's of people just go through things without that burning need to understand everything but you clearly have the desire to properly explore this world and thats really cool. Looks like you've gotten properly hooked on this. :)
    Enjoy the journey it really is a fun one! :)

    It'll probably help for future lore videos to turn on the captions. The world-building in Game of Thrones is vast and rich in depth+detail. It's what makes it so great in addition to the story itself. But it as you know now there are a lot of names/places/relationships. Adding that extra text visual to your hearing may help in retention. Taking notes def helps.
    But don't feel bad if you don't retain everything. Most watching have seen the full series at least twice (probably 5+ times) plus the thousands of content across the internet.
    We're here for your journey so enjoy and we'll help where we can.

    Not only was House Baratheon descended from the rumored bastard half-brother of Aegon the Conqueror, but Roberts grandmother was Princess Rhaelle Targaryen, making King Aerys his first cousin. At least in the books, in the show she isn’t mentioned, and I believe they simplified the Targaryen genealogy by skipping her father’s generation. Anyway, in the books there were more recent dynastic connections between House Targaryen and House Baratheon.

    The lore video was great, I hadn't seen it before. But I still think there's no substitute for pressing that rewind button 1 million times until you get all of the names and context in your head. THEN, watch the lore video, which will stitch so much together and make it even more enjoyable. But as it is, the timeline of the lore video is out of sync with the timeline that Stef is in the series. At this point in her viewing, Jamie hasn't been identified as the killer of the mad king and Tywin hasn't become the hand of the king, so she was confused about that. Bottom line, GOT is difficult to absorb and that's part of what makes it so great. Because once you get it, it's beautiful and a remarkable accomplishment.

    BUT... I think you would really enjoy Alt Shift X and Glidus (you might want to watch the rest of the show before watching the latters content...) The former one has some really good and reactable ;) videos about the world of Game of Thrones, talks about how characters are changed from book to show and all of that.

    Once ned , with less then 20 thousand men , ( but having won every battle he fought before) and had been fighting for a year , and a thousand miles from home .( more really) vs a 100 thousand men , they surrendered without a fight. And by now I've seen these episodes dozens of times, and I'm still picking things up. You ain't slow, gurl. The show is just dense 'cuz it's based on books that have waayyy more information that the show has to info-dump speedrun while also doing acting and cinematography and whatnot. Nobody picks everything up. You just gotta hit the ground running with this show and once you settle in it's not, like, a constant barrage of new things. You're not a dunce gurl I promise xD Imagine me watching numerous reactions and only realizing when Dayday pointed it out that [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS]. And according to IQ tests I'm supposed to be reasonably intelligent. Not following everything in this story first listen isn't the barometer for being smart, otherwise nobody would be smart xD

    Won't this just make the story even more confusing and hard to follow?

      No. As she said, the repeating of the same history by different narrator, with different points of view and biases, helps her remember names and connections between characters. It also is helpful in understanding the historical background to the plot, and of the entities and institutions of the show. The fact that these several historical narratives are presented with radically different perspectives, also returns an aspect of the books that is a bit lacking in the show. In the books every chapter is told from the point of view of a particular character, and the ‘facts’ as known by each POV character are often contrary to ‘facts’ presented in other chapters, by other characters. In the books the truth is not what is presented in any chapter, but merely the perceptions of the truth of some of the particular characters. The repetitive yet contradictory nature of the History and Lore videos restores a bit of that to the story. This all makes not just the story, but the very nature of the story, easier to understand.
