I hope you can see this comment, so how the boomerangs work... If they are on the ground and are greyed out, it means anyone can pick them up making it so you duel wield without the power up, you can also steal the opponents boomerang by kicking them if you don't have your boomerang at that moment. But you cannot kick people if they have a shield... You need a boomerang if you wanna fight people with shields
