One of my second great-grandfathers was Florence McCarthy from Listowel. He left in the 1840s and ended up in a town called Houtzdale, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a coal miner (when wasn't serving as a volunteer in the Civil War). I love and honor these people, and I'm sorry that some of you think we shouldn't. Sorry for you, not me.

Today it's exactly 30 years ago that Luke died. As a tribute, I recorded a dozen of his songs (including "Cooree Doon") in a studio today as a modest tribute to the best Irish folk singer ever.

As was my great gran-dad... God have mercy on them all, for no one else did. Up-load as many of these songs as you can kellyoneill. There are so many out there because of losses they can hardly think of not to mind speak of. But for these songs our lives would appear to be lucky in hard times. All our families bore the burden of remerance and passed it on to our generation. Luke knew!

What you say is very true, Luke seems to have had an innate ability to create empathy and identification through his singing with almost any imaginable situation such as working in the fields or mines, fleeing from war and poverty, or even love. With this version of the song he raised a monument to all miners to whom our ancestors and indeed we ourselves owe so much, but almost never reflect upon. Very moving song and great images, thank you for posting this.

In reference to someone's earlier comment "coorie doon" or "coorie in" is something a Lallan Scots-speaking mother would say to soothe kids to sleep - a literal translation might be "cower down" but the meaning is much more loving and more like "cuddle in" or "sleep well, love." My own mother used it with me at bedtime til she stopped tucking me in!

Coorie doon, Coorie doon, Coorie Doon, my darling,

Coorie doon, Coorie doon, Coorie Doon, my darling,
    Coorie doon the day.
Lie doon, my dear, and in your ear,
To help you close your eye,
    I'll sing a song, a slumber song,
    A miner's lullaby.
Your daddy's doon the mine, my darling,
    Doon in the Curbly Main,
Your daddy's howkin' coal, my darling,
    For his ain wee wean.
There's darkness doon the mine my darling,
    Darkness, dust and damp,
But we must have oor heat, oor light,
    Oor fire and our lamp.
Your daddy coories doon, my darling,
Doon in a three foot seam,
So you can coorie doon my darling,
    Coorie doon and dream.

'Coorie doon' in lowland Scot's dialect means 'snuggle down'. Or as near as damn it!
Written by Matt McGinn, a Scottish folk singer/writer. A few of his songs are here on y/t video's. Just type the name, see what comes up.
I've been a big fan of the Dubliners, Luke Kelly especially for many years. Theirs are great songs to sing along to when your pished out of your head. I like how when Luke sings Scottish folk songs. He does so in a very convincing Scot's dialect.
Could this be due to the fact his Mother, or was it his Grandmother was Scottish?
    He is indeed, sadly missed.

You passed a comment that Ireland had no coal reserves when two seperate coal reserves were pointed out to you one in Kilkenny and one in Tipperary you start rabbiting on about Industrial Revolutions!!!
And the main reason for importing coal and that these pits closed down is it was much cheaper to import than to produce!!
Deerpark in Kilkenny has a museum there it would probably do you good to visit it some time and get your head out of the books.
