Lead vocalist said the song was about unrequited love. And gave this quote:"...I was in love with this girl, and she was just a broken person. She kept turning to everyone except me for love and acceptance, and I wanted so much to help her. I wanted to be the one to give her everything she wanted, but I couldn't. She just couldn't accept it from me, and it was that pain, that led me to creating the song."
thepurplefire13 I always thought it was about how uncomfortable someone could be with themselves. Wanting so much to be who they are deep down inside, but hating that person at the same time. The “he” being the narrator himself. Funny, I never got an unrequited love vibe from it. Ironic how that is exactly what it’s about.
In the late 90's I fell for a beautiful raven haired woman. We seemed so right for each other and were together for nearly a year. Despite our Love, she always seemed to be looking for something else, somewhere else, and eventually drifted off. Nearly 8 years later, she was killed in a motorcycle accident. She still haunts my memory, especially whenever I hear this song.
I think all of the comments are missing what I understood most from the song. As someone who has felt like the girl in the song, I think this song does a good job of not making her the villian. It provides a good amount of understanding to where she is coming from and I was drawn in by how much I can relate to the idea of knowing someone loves me and is perfect, but for some reason I can not feel the same way. It doesn't make sense, but the fact that is in the song resonated with me because now I feel less crazy and more like this is just another version of love or type of relationship that exists in the world.
I love what you said and I do agree with you. I myself seem to be in a situation with a guy who is a good friend but he feels very strongly for me, tbh he's in love with me and I honestly don't feel the same and probably never will and it doesn't make much sense and really has me confused and not feeling so good. This has been going on over a year now and I really don't know where it will go but this song makes me think of our situation and how he feels
I like your interpretation, and I like the actual singer’s take on why they made the song (unrequited love), but I have another interpretation to add. He’s everything you want/need/want to be…. gives me transgender vibes (which the singer in no way would know). There’s trans memes where the protagonist wants to be with xyz person, or maybe they just want to be xyz person (who is usually the opposite gender), or both. The singer also said that this person they liked was broken (trauma) so it can fit my interpretation pretty well, and yours, and the singer’s, and most everybody’s. It’s a basic song but it’s a good song.
I lost my daughter and have been staying away from music for 5 weeks now. She passed away almost 3 weeks ago. And I found out I might lose her 2 weeks before that. "I am everything you want, I am everything you need. I am everything inside of you that you wish you could be. I say all the right things at exactly the right time, but I mean nothing to you and I don't know why." Describes my first love exactly. 😭
Never realized how much this song fit me. Opening up old wounds, but I seem to do that more and more these days. Its weird still being so heartbroken over someone I was never actually with, but I guess love does that to you...
I come to listen to these songs to get that vibe of the late 90s, early 2000s when I spent my days listening to all the different rock music I'd find on MTV, on my video games, and in movies. I love that late 90s/2000s vibe. I'd go back if I could.

I lost so many people over the year’s that i cannot explain how this song makes me feel.. i wish all those people were alive including my dad and bro.. i wish i was just careless like before and not to worry about anything and hug them once again.. this is a painful feeling yet magical..
This is a spiritual song guys! He's everything you want is God! He's everything you need. He say all the right things at the right time. But most people don't allow him in their lives, that's why he doesn't mean anything and we don't know why! This is why he mentions angels in the song. Hope you all still enjoy it even more :)
Thanks for a great video. I really appreciate the easily contrasting colors and uncluttered background, and most importantly, that the lyrics appeared on screen before they were already sung. I wish all lyric videos understood this.

God is a jealous God
I always come back to this song. I used to think the guy was saying no matter how hard he tried to be perfect he was never good enough in his own eyes. I thought it was about searching for self love because he changed the subject from “he” to “I” in the last chorus. Now I know it was about unrequited love.

I love it when songs have a different meanings like that where you could interpret it many different ways that's what makes something really classic when you can listen to it at different times in your life and it has different meaning and they're all special.
I love to go back too, great time for music, video games, fashion and Wrestling was great to see too and the Country was not going through problems like what is mentioned here except dealing with a President that humped anything that moved but i miss them as much as anyone else here
I think I was about 12 or 13 when this song came out. Both me and my dad really liked it, and I have so many memories of him driving with me in his old truck and this song playing on the radio. Simpler times. I miss them.
I used to share this song to a guy i liked who got friendzoned by a girl.. and in a way i was being friendzoned by him.. So i told him this describe his situation but really.. it described mine..We end up getting together.. lasted for a good 2 years.. I never told him about this..
It's a sad day when it's 3 am and this song is the only thing keeping me from crying over a girl I've been after for 4 years.. this some is my life in a nut shell
I feel your pain man I was like that once also, but the time I finally had a chance with this one girl I been after since High School it didn't feel right and I didn't know why at the time until later on I realized she wasn't the one I really wanted just cuz we had history growing up together being next door to eachother and I'm still learning til this very day just remember to listen to you're own heart and guts and in the end it'll be golden and you stay golden
I hear people saying that there relationship was just like this song. You are all missing the point, she NEVER gave him the chance to be with her. She just would hook up with another bad boy, she knew he would be always there to vent over and over again. She is a psychic vampire. And the guy is to weak to let her go. I was that guy in my early 20’s. Thank God I grew a pair and left that toxic “friendship “.
I was 9 years old when this song came on...I first heard this when I used to live in middle east (Kuwait) on FM. It was a popular repeat song...amazing lyrics...it makes you feel vulnerable towards feelings of love and Betrayal.
For some reason KJEE 92.9 in Santa Barbara, CA would always play this and like clockwork right after it would be Push by Matchbox 20. To this day I can't hear the end of this song without thinking about the beginning of push right afterwards
OMG i havent heard this song in AGES. It use to come on the radio all the time back in like 5th grade along with 3 am-Match box 20 and Here's to the Night- Eve 6 and a few others.
It’s so true when you love someone and the person just keeps ignoring for someone else. Can feel the pain the singer must have gone through when he penned it.
Wow this just gave me butterflies in my stomach do to the nostalgic overload. The 90's was so awesome no mainstream cell phones, facebook, Instagram, or bullshit internet celebrities.
I've heard this song way back when I was in Texas. My mom mad us leave in 2000 and I didn't want to leave, and after all of those years, 90's songs like this give me that nostalgic feel where I've been super happy in one place for whatever reason. Experiencing Texas again because of my great friend in Texas talking to me, my happiness returned because I remember where I came from. :3
Story of my life. I always tried to do the right thing. Treat people like i wanted to be treated. It took me 30 years to find the right person. I love you Stephanie.
High school days never thought i'd Miss you like crazy! When i was young, full of life, full of dreams, full of hope, heart was also not broken... Anyways life happens!
I used to listen this song everyday some years ago and I just noticed that I never truly listened to the lyrics.....or at least now I understand the feels....
When finally a person comes back into your life that you once was loved like no other, but it’s too late to rekindle and she’s realizing that. She went to someone who had more than I, and it haunts me to this day. And I’m here in the middle trying to live my life, but now my head is reeling and my heart is once again feeling the initial pain. Money and things over true love… now she’s realized even though I couldn’t provide those material things I could have loved her more than she’d ever fathom. Sad. Love can be potent and disastrous and painful… Love is greater than the universe.
This is how I feel about Jesus. I could just here Him telling me: "I'm everything you want, I'm everything you need. I'm everything inside of you that you wish you could be. I say all the right things at exactly the right time...... But I mean nothing to you and you don't know why." I head this song when I was like 6, and I loved it. It wasn't until I was twelve that it took on more meaning. I just heard it like that one day... I'm sure it means something else to other people, but, well, this is why I love it.
Listing to this song song in the end of 2021 hearing everyone from 4-5+ years ago wishing we could go back to carefree times...look at the times we are in now. Hope everyones staying safe.
Sometimes it's better to have loved and lost......much better. It could have been an unanswered prayer. And when you look back on it years later, you thank God.

I love to go back too, great time for music, video games, fashion and Wrestling was great to see too and the Country was not going through problems like what is mentioned here except dealing with a President that humped anything that moved but i miss them as much as anyone else here
I do to! The energy back then was great
This song is nostalgic i remember blastin this all the time when i was little Good times. Good times...
I think I was about 12 or 13 when this song came out. Both me and my dad really liked it, and I have so many memories of him driving with me in his old truck and this song playing on the radio. Simpler times. I miss them.
This is one of my favorite songs I have ever heard. I could listen to this song for hours on end.
definitely feeling this song today
I used to share this song to a guy i liked who got friendzoned by a girl.. and in a way i was being friendzoned by him.. So i told him this describe his situation but really.. it described mine..We end up getting together.. lasted for a good 2 years.. I never told him about this..
I feel ur love for him. That is so sweet of you
Thats awesome to share your story about your experience.Your anecdote just makes this song a little more special to me,peace.
This is honestly me right now
B'Elanna Sanders bless up.
I like your out look. But to the idiot that stays I don't know why.
Great music right here ladies and gentlemen..... #2020
This takes me wayyy back to those good ol days
I listened to this song when I was reading PJO's first book. Now I'm a huge fan of the series :D
Me,too!
It's a sad day when it's 3 am and this song is the only thing keeping me from crying over a girl I've been after for 4 years.. this some is my life in a nut shell
I know the feeling!
Ian Warunek it's been 2 years you ever get her?
Whoo Youu I can relate
Fool
I feel your pain man I was like that once also, but the time I finally had a chance with this one girl I been after since High School it didn't feel right and I didn't know why at the time until later on I realized she wasn't the one I really wanted just cuz we had history growing up together being next door to eachother and I'm still learning til this very day just remember to listen to you're own heart and guts and in the end it'll be golden and you stay golden
This son takes me back to my good old days. Like it.
I love the drums on this song
Sometimes I wish I could turn back time and go back to the way we were :(
Hello, How are you?
This is so my life right now I can't even say how perfect this song is.
The official Friendzone song
Officially not a friend zone song lol
Official friendzone song is Friendzoned by S3RL
OMG i havent heard this song in AGES. It use to come on the radio all the time back in like 5th grade along with 3 am-Match box 20 and Here's to the Night- Eve 6 and a few others.
It’s so true when you love someone and the person just keeps ignoring for someone else. Can feel the pain the singer must have gone through when he penned it.
Wow this just gave me butterflies in my stomach do to the nostalgic overload. The 90's was so awesome no mainstream cell phones, facebook, Instagram, or bullshit internet celebrities.
Gonna see this band on Saturday
Older music definitely hits harder. Anything before 2010 is the prime
still love love this song.
One of my fav tracks of all time. Used to just wait for it on radio!
Story of my life. I always tried to do the right thing. Treat people like i wanted to be treated. It took me 30 years to find the right person. I love you Stephanie.
Echoes of angels who won’t return… best line
High school days never thought i'd Miss you like crazy! When i was young, full of life, full of dreams, full of hope, heart was also not broken... Anyways life happens!
Gosh you sound like me. They were just better days. No work or worries.
I've been looking all over for this fucking song. Omg the nostalgia! :D
When it changes from "he" to "I"...best part 😊
This is how I feel about Jesus. I could just here Him telling me:
"I'm everything you want, I'm everything you need. I'm everything inside of you that you wish you could be. I say all the right things at exactly the right time......
But I mean nothing to you and you don't know why."
I head this song when I was like 6, and I loved it. It wasn't until I was twelve that it took on more meaning. I just heard it like that one day...
I'm sure it means something else to other people, but, well, this is why I love it.
iTyncWithReality same here. I appreciate this post so much
I thought this was a song about Jesus too, but I don't know.
live4marilyn So you think you're superior to Jesus? I like that
iTyncWithReality I also feel that way Jesus is disappionted at us but we don't really care
You can't know him unless your fed the word. Waiting for the end, waiting to hear him speak and he is within us.
Listing to this song song in the end of 2021 hearing everyone from 4-5+ years ago wishing we could go back to carefree times...look at the times we are in now. Hope everyones staying safe.
A friend of mine tweaked this song so that the intro was longer, I have it on disc somewhere, it's pretty cool.
this is the ultimate friend zone song
This is literally the story of my life. Hope it changes for me real soon... same for everyone else going through the similar stuff
Looks like it changed for you. Happy in the future
Sometimes it's better to have loved and lost......much better. It could have been an unanswered prayer. And when you look back on it years later, you thank God.
Listening to this song in 2018 it’s my fav song
Hello, How are you?
My mum always has always said to marry your best friend. She did and has been happily married for over 35 years..
What truly hurts is not even being considered a friend to the person you love
lmao the "info" cracks me up. I bet "Mayaka" hasn't been back in 7+ years :)
