Cine 57 Video Assignment #1: Textures & Patterns
60 - 90 secs max, color or b & w, silent
This is a silent piece.
Shoot a series of shots that zero-in on patterns and/or textures. Think about the relationships between shots. Does one lead to the next in terms of lines/curves, shape, contrast, color, movement? You may use straight cuts or dissolves in post (if you want some overlap). The human figure may be used only if abstract (silhouette or very tight on parts of the body).
Does the film change over time in terms of rhythm or pacing? (length of shots)
Does it progress over time in other ways? does it use tighter and tighter shots or wider and wider, start with one color or tone and moving to another? Is it abstract throughout or start abstract and reveal what it is/start as representation and become abstract?
Thinking about this will give the piece some structure. Other possible approaches: bookending, AB AB verse chorus, ABC CBA, ABA etc.
Pay attention to focus and exposure. This does not have to be locked down shots on a tripod, but that recommended so that patterns and textures are the focus rather than camera movement-unless the movement adds to the feeling you want and/or the perception of the shape/texture.
