General information about this footage:
After Nazi Germany surrendered in May 1945, General Arnold ordered Lt. Col. Owen Crump to document the extent of the damage caused by aerial bombardment. This project was code-named "Special Film Project 186." Crump and his crew, using color film, surveyed bomb damage inflicted on the major European cities. In addition, Crump recorded the debriefings of Nazi civilian and military personnel in Allied custody such as Herman Goering, as well as the capture of the Ohrdruf and Buchenwald concentration camps by American soldiers.
Crump and his crew shot hundreds of hours of film - most of which has never been seen. The Army Air Force declined to fund the production and editing of the footage at an estimated cost of $1 million. The documentary The Story of Special Film Project 186 points out that the effort was "the biggest color film project of World War II-and the biggest unseen film of all time."

GENAU! Wollte ich sagen, gut gemacht!
00:58 to 01:25 Flying from the South-East towards Koblenz passing over the river Rhine with destroyed Pfaffendorfer brücke, then past the Kurfürstliches Schloss (Electoral palace - the long straight building (top right) with the Schlossvorplatz (palace gardens) (grassy area with trees and crescent buildings) behind. Also visible: the two towers of both the Liebfauenkirche (middle right) and the Florinskirche (far right).
stellt den Mann an :D
I think the south-east is exactly the street „Auf der Bienhornschanze“ in Koblenz.
That plane is flying incredible low.
A lot of times you only see fotage from way up high.
Incredible to recognise parts.
Thank you so much for this !! I was born and raised in Hanau.
Makes my heart cry to see this... I am so thankful for the american forces that saved to many civilians ! I live in the states now, but my heart will forever be in Hanau !
Thank you for your thankfulness. I truly appreciate it because my great uncle was KIA March 30, 1945 in Hanau.
gruss aus Hanau
00:19 Neustadt Hanau ( de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geschichte_der_Stadt_Hanau ). At 00:25 top left: the ruins of the circular Wallonisch-Niederländische Kirche ( de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallonisch-Niederl%C3%A4ndische_Kirche ). 00:35 Town square with burnt down town hall (façade still standing) and the statue of the Grimm brothers in front of it.
I have no special relation with Hanau or any other place in Germany. I am not even German. How did I find it was Hanau? Some simple detective work: I googled. Really! I thought the city square and the ruined building at 00:37 (which I presumed was the Rathaus) was good point to start my search. So I googled 'Rathaus weltkrieg zerstört' (without the quotes), and on the images tab, I looked for town hall that resembled the building in the clip (like a 3 storey façade without columns, with 9 windows on each level, and a small pediment on top - and a statue in front). I found a town hall that I thought was the one in the clip: Hanau. vivaldi.net/media/com_easysocial/photos/6805/102027/picture_original.jpg
Just call me 'asman' :-)
I spent ten years of my childhood in Hanau. I spotted the Marktplatz (0:37) instantly, even with all the destruction. I used to climb that Brother Grimm statue as a child and take the bus to school from the Marktplatz bus stop.
Also, there is nowhere better to spend christmas than in Hanau. The way it looks and smells during the holidays is incredible. :)
Thank you 27asman!
Unbelievable footage.
01:53 Koblenz: (destroyed) bridges over the Mosel river.
Thank you for your expert guidance. Unfortunately there wasn't much left to look at but it conveys a clear picture of the destruction. Why an advanced civilization would allow such a madman to assume absolute power is beyond me.

This is so sad and tragic.
war is so sick, why must anyone drop bombs on the civil houses, kills wimmen and children they never had to do with the war. Both sides are total crasy and both lost there kindnes. But good Pictures they show whats better not happend ever again.
Looks worse than Hiroshima
and yet the whole world only remembers that when this was qually or even worse in almost every city in the country
