Christopher Tin - Calling All Dawns - Full Angel City Chorale Concert with Lyrics

  • DESCRIPTION:
There is plenty of elements in Christopher Tin's albums: it doesn't concern only music (of course, music is what ties all together), but also linguistics (every song is in a different language), literature (every text is an excerpt from a pre-existent text adapted to an original music), philosophy (the cycle structure of albums, their religious/social/poetic content); this is what, in my opinion, makes his work of great artistic and cultural value.
I wanted to study his songs, especially their texts, and the best way to do that was to read lyrics and translations simultaneously with the music; Christopher Tin allowes us to do that with a free download of his albums' digital booklets in his official website (www.christophertin.com/); anyway, to make things even easier, and to promote Christopher Tin's works, I created what I'd have liked to find when I just knew Christopher Tin, a Live with Lyrics; in this way, though songs are a little bit different, the vision is surely less demanding.
I have inserted lyrics where they were available (the choir in Lux Aeterna is an addition in the Concert, absent in the original, so it has no lyrics), removing silences between songs when they are absent in the album, and maintaining them in the spaces between the three parts of the album, marked by the moving of the sun.
I added some gold-texts when I found some melodies which are repeated in more songs; these melodies don't only give unity to the album, but also have some meanings that we are called to discover. The list of this melodies is at the bottom of the description.
    Hope you'll enjoy :)
    SONGS LIST:
    Part I - Day:
00:20 Baba Yetu (Our Father - Swahili)
03:53 Mado Kara Mieru (Through The Window I See - Japanese)
08:51 Dao Zai Fan Ye (The Path is in Returning - Mandarin)
12:28 Se E Pra Vir Que Venha (Whatever Comes, Let it Come - Portuguese)
    16:31 Rassemblons-Nous (Let Us Together - French)
    Part II - Night:
21:02 Lux Aeterna (Eternal Light - Latin)
25:17 Caoineadh (To Cry - Irish)
30:41 Hymn to Trójcy Świętej (Hymn to the Holy Trinity - Polish)
    Part III - Dawn:
37:27 Hayom Kadosh (Today is Sacred - Hebrew)
39:25 Hamsáfár (Journey Together - Farsi)
    42:30 Sukla-Krsne (Light and Darkness - Sanskrit)
44:49 Kia Hora Te Marino (May Peace Be Widespread - Maori)
    RECURRING MELODIES:
Christopher Tin himself "has been meaning to do it for awhile now himself - make a video that connects all the musical motifs and stuff" (his words). So, since we know these motifs have a meaning in the album, I thought to wirte here what we have found so far. Recurring melodies found until now are:
    - Life Sound: it is at the beginning and at the end of the Album. It is the main signal of the cycle structure, and it is at the beginning of Day (Baba Yetu - 00:15) and at the end of Dawn (Kia Hora Te Marino - 47:59); so this melody should be referred to both parts and to no song in particular.
    - Ikubaku ka aru: it is a main melody in Mado Kara Mieru, but it appears also in Baba Yetu (02:25) and Hayom Kadosh (38:49), first songs of Day and Dawn. I gave it the name "ikubaku ka aru", since those are the words with that the melody is sung for the first time (05:55), and they mean "how much more is there to live?"
    - Peace/Journey sound: this melody appairs in Se E Pra Vir Que Venha (14:13) and in Hamsafar (40:51), very joyous songs; i called it this way since peace and journey look to be the main two ways in that happiness appears.
The names I gave to this melodies are only interpretations, and their meanings could be different: free to give other meanings and to look for other repeating melodies. Other melodies found after the creation of the video and so not signed by the gold text:
    - "Flute sound", a main melody in Lux Aeterna (22:02) that appears also in Baba Yetu (02:20) and in Hayom Kadosh (38:33) always a little before the "ikubaku ka aru" melody. [Found by Scott Johnson in comments]
    - "Music Growing Up", is present both in Mado Kara Mieru (07:21) and Sukla-Krsne (43:10)
    - "Hamsafar melody", (39:48), is also present in Kia Hora Te Marino (46:06), with so much evidence that I feel stupid for I had not noticed it before .-.
    - "Rassemblons-Nous melody" (16:40) is also present in Sukla-Krsne (43:39)
I also notice a similar structure of Dao Zai Fan Ye and Lux Aeterna (few lyrics, central central plucked string instruments, similar ending)
Considering Caoineadh and and Hymn do Trojcy Swietej bound together, every song is so connected to an other.

I have to disagree with most of the comments below regarding the choir's performance. Look at the faces of those singing, Baba Yetu, Mado Kara Mieru, Hayom Kadosh, etc; the singers are smiling. Theres totally passion there and you cant deny that. While I agree, yeah maybe they don't sing it the best as all these languages aren't well known to the singers, but you can tell everyone's having a good time and they love what they're singing.

Listening to it with chills. It's all astonishing, but the French song was unnervingly accurate in 2020! The highlights for me are the motifs that are shared as a thread of commonality between songs representing disparate cultures and languages. A truly spiritual work.

It would be really great for Christianity if somebody could commission Christopher Tin to compose a Mass that could be used in the context of a Catholic or Anglican service with moderate resources. Unless he already did.

    • @edwardpark247

      Baba Yetu!

    • @warreneckels4945
      @warreneckels4945 Před 6 lety

Baba Yetu is the Our Father, which is found during the Litugy of the Eucharist. The parts of the Mass usually set to music are:
The Kyrie (Kyrie eleison, "Lord Have Mercy")
The Gloria ("Glory to God in the Highest")
The Credo (the Nicene Creed, "We/I believe in One God, Father Almighty...")
The Sanctus ("Holy, holy, holy Lord...hosanna in the highest:)
The Agnus Dei ("Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world ...have mercy upon us (2x) ...grant us peace (1x)
The Our Father is usually sung or chanted.
At Roman Catholic, Lutheran and Episcopal parishes where the effort put into music goes beyond a volunteer pianist or organist, the Kyrie is sometimes sung, the Gloria is always sung, the Credo is almost never sung, the Sanctus and Agnus Dei are usually sung. Sometimes the Kyrie is omitted or replaced with the Trisagion (in Episcopalian usage).

    • @warreneckels4945
      @warreneckels4945 Před 6 lety

One requirement though that makes this challenging: the Catholic Mass is 60-75 minutes long when most of the parts are sung: priests and parishioners do not like it when the mass is lengthened beyond 75 minutes outside Ordinary Time, if only because most parishes offer two morning Masses. Episcopal services go longer, largely because the sermon is usually 2-3 times as long as in the Catholic Church.
Mozart's Masses (except for the Missa Brevis) and Bach's four-hour opus were reserved for other purposes of devotion or (more usually) entertainment.

    • @warreneckels4945
      @warreneckels4945 Před 6 lety

Last comment: Baba Yetu is a tour de force for elite or professional choirs. It can probably be done with a trained cantor singing the solo parts and the congregation singing the choral part in unison, but some of the effect would be lost. Barring the congregation completely from the Our Father cannot be a good thing during Mass.

It´s difficult to me to understand most of the portuguese theme... i have to read the lyrics. Dulce Pontes should be more proper ... even though she sings in brazilian, this theme !!!... not portuguese. Nevertheless, i liked Kat Green´s interpretation, her musical expression. Just utterly incredible. giosialu - you have done some amazing, dedicated work - not far from the Angel City chorale themselves. :)
A remark - did you notice the connection to Nobuo Uematsu and his Final Fantasy orchestral soundtrack? specifically FF7, FF8, FF9. Recurring melodies #2, #3, #5 are from there, I am almost certain.
Give his sound tracks a shot. Try LiAWP_mclzY, starting at 54:51.

He hired tutors to instruct him in the various languages on the proper pronunciation etc.

Słychać, że wokalista z polskiego fragmentu nie jest Polakiem, a szkoda. Miałem nadzieję, że podstawią Polaka z piękną artykulacją i dykcją.

Does anyone know where I could find the orchestral scores for the Hymn to the holy trinity (minute 30:40). We would be so glad to play this wonderful work within our orchestra.

Good video for following along! The performances aren't quite as good as the album (the French singer's pronunciation is awful, that's the only one I can speak for). But the overall effect of knowing what is being said makes it more powerful. The Sanskrit one is particularly amazing live.

Listening to the French pronounciation for Rassemblons Nous drives me absolutely crazy; way too bright, doesn't come across well (at least to my ear).

  • @frankenstein6677

Well they've butchered the Portuguese pronunciation harder than the original singers (quite the feat, but even the Americans that live in my country seem to butcher it to some extent), but overall the performance is really good! Translation could be waaay better though, that's pretty unforgivable nowadays.

That last song in Maori actually made me cringe, if it didn't have "- Maori" at the end of the title, I would have thought it wassupposed to be some other language I had never heard of

Beautifull songs, but in the 4th one, she is definitively not speaking portuguese how it should be spoken.
Not even close. The accent is so gross and disgusting.
    Why they did this? =[

Hate to say it, but these white folk are so stiff and mechanical about it compared to the original Soweto singers. They're just reading it off page, note-by-note, with no soul.

I agree with you, but as someone already said it's hard to sing with all your spirit when you can actually understand anything. I'm polish and there's in song in this concerto too. I know they're trying very hard but even though I barely can understand lyrics. I think their stiffness in singing comes from trying to do their best in pronunciation and note reading and I took we can forgive them.

Not agree. They begin stiff, but they evolve. They are also a classical choir. Not evident with people who dont sing etnical music It's not honest to compare that with the Soweto Gospel Choir. Its not the same choir, and SGC is one of the best soul/ ednical choirs in the world.
