- John Marston goes to Fort Mercer & runs into Bill WIlliamson. He makes a plea with him to surrender and come with John as a chance to "save" him. To John's surprise 2 more men reappear from behind the wall and one shoots John. Bonnie MacFarlane rescues John and helps bring him back to health.
After running into Bill Williamson again, John & a few others decide to raid Fort Mercer. When they clear out the fort Bill is nowhere to be seen. Word is he headed to Mexico. John Marston crosses the river and tries to look for him.
After doing a bunch of running around and capturing Javier Escuella, he gets tipped off about something going on in Escalera.
The Mexican Army has executed many rebels in Escalera and has caught Abraham Reyes. John Marston arrives to see the citizens fighting the army, and eventually finds a tied-up Reyes, about to be executed.
Luisa Fortuna tries to save Reyes, only to get shot, and Marston avenges her by killing two of the soldiers watching over Reyes, who killed her. The remaining one, Raul Zubieta, challenges Marston to a duel. Marston wins and frees Reyes. After freeing many rebel prisoners, the rebels launch an all-out assault on Escalera.
Once you've taken care of the incoming forces, move back into the fort and join up with Reyes. As Reyes' rebels breach through the door, Allende will be fleeing in a stagecoach with Bill Williamson. Head down the stairs behind the house and kill the three soldiers still left behind. Get on a horse and follow Williamson and Allende.
There are two guards on horses behind the cart, as well as the guard on the Gatling Gun. Take them all out before killing the guard riding shotgun, as he'll also be firing at you. Riding sideways will make it harder for the Gatling to kill you. Either shoot all the horses to make the cart stop or, even simpler, just kill the driver with a well aimed rifle head shot to make the wagon slow to a stop.
Alternate method: It is possible to kill all guards from the balcony as soon as you exit onto the veranda. The stagecoach will be riding away to your left. With your Rolling Block rifle, use dead-eye and snipe the guard riding shotgun, the driver, the Gatling Gun's guard and the two horsemen. The stagecoach will then stop and no chase will be necessary.
Once the stagecoach has stopped, Allende will try to buy his freedom by handing over Williamson. The player can then decide to either kill both of them, one of them, or neither of them, where whoever is not killed by John will instead be shot dead by Reyes.
Reyes invites Marston to accompany the rebels in marching on the capital to overthrow Sanchez, but John declines as he must return to Blackwater.

RDR2 does answer that. Dutch was more careful with his choices and used to not care about the numbers his gang had. He didn’t want to be like Colm’s gang where he favored the numbers and not the people in it. So it’s likely that Bill only cared about the numbers in his gang too and how pretty much all of them were idiots. Although, I don’t know how Bill got many people to listen to him or how it turned out that way since Bill became the very thing he was afraid of becoming.

RDR3 with Jack is a very idiotic desicion for a Red Dead game, it would be cool if they did an offshoot coming from red dead or getting a cameo in another game. Though in my opinion it shouldn't be part of the series anymore since it wouldn’t even be a western which so far Red Dead has been.
I feel like if there would be a game even further in the past from RDR2 with the same group of characters it shouldn't be a “redemption story” anymore. It would be amazing if they created another “Red Dead” like how there is Red Dead Revolver before there was Red Dead Redemption. On the other hand they could just have a new set of characters and do what the hell they wanna do with them.

Shot during the Blackwater massacre, stranded and mauled by wolves on top of a mountain, shot and sent flying off a train moving full speed then walks miles back to camp and into another shootout. Shot clean in the stomach out in the desert and slips into a coma, but survives all of it.
Hell even when he does die it takes hundreds of shots and he still manages to survive a good minute while riddled with bullets.

With the context of Red Dead Redemption 2, you really understand how the gang felt about John. They respected Arthur but John was just another member of their gang. Bill doesn't know how badass he became.

Especially when he tried to leave the gang behind a year before the whole gang got caught up in the snowy mountains at the beginning of rdr2.
In rdr2, arthur was always taking the lead and helping Dutch get the plans done.
John was Dutch's fav in RDR2 until Chapter 4

But not nearly as good or satisfying. I love the music, the build-up and the one shot Max Payne style kill cam followed by the guitar sound and Arthur wisecracking as he spins his gun and holsters it....I wish there were more in the 2nd one.
duels in rdr 2 are simple too. the reason it seems hard is because the game kind of is misleading in how it tells you to use it. If you do what the instructions say you are fighting yourself and that is the fault of rockstar. You dont have to let the bar fill you can draw on them anytime. You can easily one shot anybody to the gut before they even attempt to draw on you.

I am so glad I played RDR2 without knowing the story of RDR1, it is much better to be in shock because of the ending than when you know what is going to happen.
Yup, Red Dead 1 was one of my favorite games of that whole console generation; for those of us that played Red Dead 1 it meant that we had an understanding that the gang was going to be ripped apart and destroyed with John being left for dead, and that Dutch was likely going to be a clear antogonist. It also gave us a pretty strong feeling that Arthur was going to die, given that John dies in the first game and that Arthur is never mentioned in the first game.
Yeah that's always the downside to pre-sequels. There's a part at the end where John falls off a train and all I could think was "ight so when we getting him back?"

After having finished the story on RDR2 I had to come back and watch how it all lead up to the events of RDR. Bill being one of three reasons. New perspective on all of it, Amazing story!
I remember the first time playing through this game way back when I thought Bill was just some crazy old dude but now it feels completely different watching these scenes knowing everything that happened
I hunted down Javier and Bill without any Mercy kind of breaks my heart though after Red Dead Redemption 2... just men who thought they finally found purpose an meaning with a family and rug got pulled out from beneath them... can tell right off the bat even with bills tuff talk he didn't wanna shoot John hell he could of finished him right there.... but didn't finish the job .... an the death of them all began with a bit of mercy

My reason for why Arthur was not mentioned in this game, is that all most everyone in Dutch's gang, blames Arthur for the destruction of the life they know, so they wouldn't speak about him. And why John never speaks of Arthur for once in this game, is because John believes Arthur would want John to move on from him, let him rest in peace.
I kind of want a remake of this game except with arthur. Doesn't have to be canon. But a "what if" story line. Arthur managed to survive the TB on the mountain and made it to Mary Linton's house with the help of Charles. Survives the TB and kicks it, with the help of the Brother he helps out, makes them swear to not tell anyone that he's alive. Flees to Tahiti with Mary. FBI finds him and says they'll arrest and kill john, and hold John's family if he doesn't help john track down Bill and Javier and Dutch. Bill says "I implores you to go back and tell them to send someone a little bit more impressive next time." (Remember, Bill doesn't know how much of a badass John has become since the gang broke apart) And then Arthur steps out and says "Well what about me?" And then the game continues from there but with Arthur and John and the option to play as either, and as a co-op game

John would shocked and surprised by the fact that Arthur is alive and knowing Bill is pissing his pants, Arthur was the muscle between members of the gang. The gang died with Arthur rather with Dutch.
