honestly the fact that it was kind of a very foolish investment is kind of a good thing i think. like, they weren’t making any money from press or advertisements, they were just… giving kids a rad time to have fun with something they enjoyed. it’s just… sort of pure in that way.

@@JettKuso I mean it can. It just needs to be budgeted for. Only reason it doesn't is cause the people that own companies don't find it that important, not the concept of capitalism itself. Baku-Con was the best day of my life. I was also 12 at the time when I placed top 4 at the New York Regional. I still have the plaque from winning the Black Flight on my wall, that and the 1000 G Neo Dragonoid are my prized possessions. It was such a special experience for me as someone who grew up watching these tournament game shows like Bakugan, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, etc. getting to compete and make it as far as I did. It was like the first big accomplishment of my life.
Throughout this whole video I kept slowing down and pausing on the pictures to see if I could see myself. This is so crazy, I never thought I’d see a video about someone who was there. Bakugan will always hold such a special place in my heart because of Baku-Con.

    A few things...
6:25 I felt this personally. When the Toys R Us Bakugan Battle League was taking place during Gundalian Invaders, I was one of if not the only people at my store who would take the game seriously and ended up winning a lot of my games against much younger kids through landing Double Stands/them constantly missing. Most of those kids only had up to just New Vestroia Bakugan and weren't too well versed in the game's rules, and even though I dialed back my team to use NV Bakugan for them instead of my new GI ones, my winning streak was somehow enough to convince a few of those kids to practice with GI Bakugan and come up with actual deck synergies just to try and go even against me.
12:36 Today I learned this, actually the first time I heard that about him and never thought to connect the dots. Genuinely did not know that Failboat, a known successful youtuber nowadays, was also *that* other kid on the champion stage.
Wish I could also have had family-bonding moments like yours where my parents were supportive of my hobbies and the things I liked (because my parents certainly weren't). One of my parents would reluctantly drive me to TRU on the BBL days they were able to do so and either drop my sister off too or stay themselves the entire time to supervise watch me and man were they uninterested. Think my sister even commented how I was the only kid playing there who was really fired up excited. It's like mom and dad never really saw or cared to acknowledge how much Bakugan mattered to me. (They were like those parents that just assumed it was like Pokemon)

It was frustrating to watch. The judges not only seemed untrained on the rules but to not even know anything about Bakugan. It was like they were figuring out the rules AS they read the cards.
I forget the card name but it was something like "Flip a coin for each attribute bonus on the gate card. Each attribute that gets heads gets its bonus doubled". The judges ruled it as his opponent got the double combined G Power of every attribute on the card making that terrible card the best card in game for that one tournament.

That's touch warming. You could argue that while your dad was always busy, from a business standpoint he actually learned a lot about these conventions and probably took that knowledge with him to his job. So in a sense it was a benefit for your dad as well. Either way, you had a lovely bound and memory that'll last.

Thank you for posting this. I have almost the exact same story, though my dad and I had always been close. We went to Baku-Con in California, halfway across the country, just as a way to spend some time together. There was a father-son team side event that we won, leaving with a Nintendo Wii.
You really summed up why it was such a special experience for me. He passed away last year, and I really wish I could show him this video.

I love this kind of stories. My relationship with my dad is also hard, but we share a love of cinema, of stories. I still hold dear how he woke me up at 6am to watch Batman TAS before school/work. Was able to relieve that feeling when we watched his favorite movie, 2001. And he had tears of happiness at the end of Arcane, only due to its quality. Love you dad.

Aww that story about getting to spend 3 days/nights in NY with your father and your relationship improving after that is so sweet.
Switching focus to Baku-Con: It's kind of sad to see that even back during legacy, Spin master really had no idea what they were doing. I wonder if the disaster that was bakugan was why they never committed to supporting the Gen 2 TCG...

While I didn't get to experience Bakucon, I do remember the Bakugan Battle League at the Toys R Us stores. My dad took me to all of them except the first one and it was a pretty cool experience. There were tons of kids at the first two events and I remember winning a decent amount, mainly because everyone seemed super confused to how my White Naga worked. The storyline they had going on for each event was really cool, especially because winning matches actually gave you more votes for what you wanted to happen next in the story and the promo cards were pretty sick, so it felt like whether you win or lose it felt like you were actually doing something. I was a little upset that the last two events had little to nobody there, especially the last one where even after arriving late the Toys R Us workers said I was the only kid who showed up so they just gave me all of the leftover promo cards from the entire event and just packed it up early. I still have my flyers and event pamphlets from each event, the member card and all of the extra promos laying around somewhere in a box in my attic. After all these years, those two first two events I went to were some of the most fun I had as a kid

Honestly an amazing Childhood Memory of getting absolutely destroyed in the tournament! I’ve been trying to find archival footage of the tournament for so long to try and relive some of those old memories! There was even a dance competition there to win some Bakugan, I came in second place to a toddler LOL! Amazing video, worth the subscribe and Patreon contribution! Thanks for helping me re live these awesome memories!

I'll be honest, I expect this to be the hook that pulled you in enough to be working hand in hand with spinmaster with your adverts and such. Nah, you got time with your dad, and honestly, good for you. I know he'd never think it, but mine is similar. Makes himself work all the time and gets stressed and never has the excuse to not work. I worked with him over last year, so we did get closer, but this was honestly beautiful to see. I'm happy for you, Jett. Keep on keeping on
