- Talk's Alex Phillips reacts to the average household energy bill increasing by £149 from October after Ofgem said it was increasing its price cap as homes approach the winter months.
The regulator announced it is hiking its price cap by 10% from the current £1,568 for a typical household in England, Scotland and Wales to £1,717.
It is around £117 cheaper than the cap in October last year, which was £1,834.
Alex says: "Better stop boiling the kettle"

Can’t believe so many people fall for all this rubbish. Cheap gas is available, cheaper electricity is available, the desire to produce it is non existent. Politicians are utterly clueless.
Every household is paying a STANDING CHARGE of about one pound a day for the privilege of being connected to energy suppliers. That standing charge is the BULK of my monthly energy bill. I live alone as a pensioner and my monthly average is 58 pounds of which 30 pounds is standing charge, for WHAT ????? Scrap the Standing charges. The connections were made when the houses were built.
Scrap road tax on cars, tax on insurance, tax on pensions. Why is an internet connection 40 pounds a month when it used be be 8 pounds ? Why is technology use becoming MORE EXPENSIVE when we know it is actually cheaper and more efficient ?
I was out of the country for 4 months. I did hope I would have built up a credit going into winter. As it is, for an entirely empty house, using nothing, my bill is not much less! You are right, the standing charges are iniquitous.
There's a standing charge because infrastructure needs to be maintained if you're using it or not
@@edaleman2758 A standing charge should NOT be 50% of your energy bill. That is insane. 30 pounds a month per household is not maintaining infrastructure, it is extortion.

What I do know is that for every household in UK it does not cost 360 pounds a year to maintain the infrastructure to that house. Most energy companies are just selling the energy, be it gas or electricity. Which is why it is so easy to switch supply companies. It is not me who has no idea. Have you seen the energy company profits ? Think again.

Paid £10500 for a solar battery 10.5 kwhsystem this year. Used a drawdown on my pension fund. At moment pay back time is 7 half years . Already made £900 in 7 months. i live near Sheffield .
If government started a home installation company instead of wasting money on gbenegy the cost of installation in bulk buying could come down to about 5k to 6k per house. Offer a rental system or complete buy out . Flats could then be offered a share in profits to reduce their bills.
If every house had a solar system then we not would need to install a completely new grid system with hundreds of new pylons.
Also each individual house could be linked up to make a giant battery storage system .
So no need to plow land to install mega gigabyte battery storage installation.
We need forward thinking . Jointly we can work together for a better country

We still have gas and oil under the North Sea yet we buy both from other countries ! We should be fracking too to tide us over until SMRs come on line.

Where does this £20billion of subsidies to fossil fuel come from. Its surely tax allowance for investment, the same as any company gets for buying plant and equipment. But the wind energy companies do receive massive tax payer subsidies on top of expenditure allowances.
I make up a big thermos flask of boiling water in the morning which does me all day .
We had energy security when we were able to turn on the gass boiler to create the energy. Now we have to hopw the wind is blowing cause if its not we have no energy. No food no shops. Food waiste would double if wind dont blow to keep fridges cold lol

People should give some attention to the changing AMOC and AMO as this is going to be bringing a cold climate our way and I'd like to see how your renewables do then in winters like that of the 1950's, winds too high for wind turbines, snow covering solar panals, inefficiency due to low temperatures and will coincide with your 2030 net zero target date😱.
