My father taught my leatherworking when I was about 14, I am now past offical retirement age and I still remember making this wallet. I didn't do the carving but I did engrave my initals in fancy script. It is such a flashback to see this wallet again .... thank-you.

btw, Beautiful work!
you always want to lace with one long piece though. that way there is no splicing and no appearance of joints of the lace. it makes a far superior lace appearance when you use on long continous piece of lace. it is also stronger and will last longer.
This video saved me while lacing the Tandy Revival Purse. I watched another Tandy video on double loop lacing and got a little lost when he said he had removed a few stitches for the join at the end since it wasn't actually shown. Here he actually showed the process so I knew I was actually supposed to pull out stitches. Saved me a lot of fear and headaches!
Followed along and relaced a family airlum. My deceased Grandpa's wallet. I used plastic lacing to keep the wallet original. Looks great. Thank you.

I have 3 purses that my mother and dad made many years ago. They need relacing and I don't remember how. I live in Torrance and the nearest Tandy's is in No Hollywood. They need some TLC like Saddle soap and more I am sure. Does anyone in the area do Leather Carving that be willing to look at what I have and tell me if it is worth my time. I can remember lacing for them but that was about 70 years ago. I am a crafter so am framiliar with needle and thread. I am so happy to have saved these pieces and want to finish them for new use. What is hard for me is converting it for left hand. Is there a set of Tandy Videos for Lefty's? I still figured it out but had to take it out several times and start over several times.

Ned more volume. Volume was good during the intro, then it fell way down.
decent explanation, but overall a pretty sloppy job of lacing, especially the splicing you did. you used the wrong chisels for the size lace you are using. the chisels should have been a more narrow space between the teeth and the chisel should have been the angled prongs as well instead of the straight prongs that you used. you also did not tighten up the lace enough. the lacing should be pulled tight, nearly to the point of breaking the lace but not quite.
Hey Sir, I really do enjoy what I get out of your videos. It's not only fun to watch, but listening to you explain how to do things, is very easy to follow. You speak as if we're right there, sitting next to you. It's pretty cool, in my opinion. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to help us out. It does exactly that!

I don't know if anyone is still looking at these comments but I wanted to tell you thank you for a great tutorial series. I'm not making a wallet just yet though I do need one so I will be soon but just the detailed explanation of the correct use of the tools, stains etc has taught me a lot. I now know why some of my previous projects didn't come out as good as I would like them. Particularly the staining etc. Once again, great series. Thank you.
I recently dug out my leather tools after 35 years. I was amazed how many new products are now available AND how many of the finer points of leatherworking I simply had forgotten. I appreciate your videos to remind me and to teach me many updated techniques, especially working with the newer dyes and stains.

When it comes to folding the finished product, do you dampen the leather at all? I finished a similar wallet and am worried about the leather on the exterior of the fold. it is tooled, dyed, and sealed on the outside. inside is only dyed so far. Can I dampen from the inside to fold, and then seal after the forming is done?

I’m using a thin piece of leather to lace and I’m having one heck of a time with it twisting and knotting up. It’s really frustrating. Any advice to keep it flat ?

how would you end the lacing if it doesn't go around the whole piece? just stick the loose end under the lacing?

Cait K - Sometimes you have to re-adjust the lacing in the pronged needle. Make sure you’re securing it by pressing on it with your mallet. If you’re still having troubles, try putting a dot of rubber cement between the lace and needle to keep it in place. Cut off that part of the lace when finished. We hope this helps!
Tandy Leather thank you! I find I have to be very delicate with the needle and not accidentally tap it. I followed your guidance of expanding the holes more, that helped! I am trying to get the delicate balance of expanding the holes and not being too forceful on the fabric and ruining the leather. I also found that the material would bunch up at the hole so I cut off the very tip of the arrow so it would slide through a tad easier.
I haven't used rubber cement before, if I did would that mean I could no longer use the needle after the one lace is attached?

Rubber Cement is easier to clean off the needle - don't get it confused with contact cement... Now that would be a mess! Ha!

Is there a video on how to or where to get custom tooling hardened?
What is the best way to make a nice custom initial stamp for stamping or marking custom leather works?
A maker's mark? Usually for leather a lot of amateur makers will have it made of plastic in a 3D printer as it is much cheaper than having a custom metal stamp made. Oh by the way, most stamps are not hardened at all because leather is soft, especially when wet like for veg-tanned. If you want to make hardened stamps then you have to start with high carbon steel as regular steel doesn't harden.
If you get some O1 tool steel, let's say and want to harden it, put it in charcoal coals using a hair dryer to blow on the coals. Now when it gets red hot, or reaches non-magnetic at 1418 F, let it soak for a minute or so making sure to turn down the air blast so as to not overheat it. Then quench it in canola oil in a metal container. Because if you use plastic you can melt a hole in it and will make a mess. You need to temper it at 400 degrees in your kitchen or toaster oven for 2 hours and it should be fairly hard. l make knives which is why l started doing leather, to make sheaths.

Thanks for the lesson. I have never laced, I hand sew or machine sew. So Jim would it help the lace and look if I were to edge the sides, burnish and dye?
Gret video but have a suggestion. If the spacing of the lacing holes is in question, wouldn't it be better to punch one set of holes from each corner and then proceed as he is doing to that when you get towards the middle, if needed, make your adjustments for spacing so that the spacing would be uniform (balanced) towards the middle.

does it matter if the holes r round or what you have there and can the distance be great apart than what you have here
+Darren Mckean The shape of the hole is not as important as the proper spacing. You want the distance of the holes to correlate with the width of the lace.

I bought these lacing needles but it's so tight at the top, I can't get the lace inserted and I cannot pry it apart. Any hints?
try using a knife to thin the end of the lace.
Mary Ann Wilson place the needle on the end of a square table or board. Push down on it and it will open up. You’ll ha e to try this to see how to do it. Go try.

Why use blind luck, why not measure before you cut the leather so it’s the right distance for the hole puncher?

Great video. But the hands? My friend wyatts hands shake like that and he's only 17. Is it cerebral palsy or something similar. It doesn't seem to have an effect on his nerves Or anything ??
