I'm so glad Tim had someone like Dr. Goldblatt, someone who cared about him and encouraged him to live and grow. I can't imagine (and sometimes take for granted) the people who love me and accept me for who I am, doing anything but that, and pushing and suppressing me to the point where I wouldn't want to live. I'm glad Tim kept going and I'm glad he is alive.
Thank God for all of the Dr. Goldenblatt's of this world! Although I am a straight woman, my teenage years were very much like Tim's. feeling overexposed and totally repressed because of my upbringing. I wouldn't relive those years for all the money in the world. But it does get better, it really does!
When he talked about his suicide attempt my heart just clenched in my chest thinking about how if he had succeeded we would have never gotten to meet him and share in all his wit and passion 😢
Tim Gunn is proof that angels live amongst us. i'm not religious & it's not remotely something i would normally think or say about anyone, but he is special and kind and giving beyond all reason, and deserves so much respect and love. he is a mentor for us all
What a wonderful series! I hope that anyone who feels he or she is the "odd kid out" will realize that gay people are a significant portion of any population at any time or place and there's nothing unusual about it. Being gay is just a natural variation on the spectrum of human identity and it's the haters who are weird, not gay folks.
I am glad i watched this. I had seen Tim on Project Runway...and i thought he was a bit of a gay caricature and stereotype. But after hearing his story...i feel very sorry for him. It must have been so hard growing up in that era. We lgbt youth are SOOO lucky to be alive in 2016. So much has changed for the better.
MaleOrderBride you are lucky and I appreciate you so much for voicing this... as today it feels like a lot of youth don’t appreciate or even care about what we older folks had to struggle through... and how traumatizing it was in childhood pre-internet. But in return I will say at least back then our “closet” remained relatively safe if we could get back to it to hide for a while... there was no cyber bullying to reach into your psyche and destroy you without your family even being aware you were in need of protection. The devastation and trauma inflicted on our youth today due to online bullying and betrayal, truly hurts my heart... I would not have survived it. You are all so strong and courageous for owning your identity so openly, so early. you may have more resources but due to technology, hatred and torment can also reach you in ways we could never imagine back then. 🌈 💞🦄
When i took the pills and woke up alive with my boyfriend, best friend, sisters and parents there I realized that this is not how my life is ending. All of them was there and was scared for my life. They couldn't see my heart beats. I was practically dead but I survived. A year later and 6 months in therapy (DBT) I feel so much better. I survived and you will too! Seek help, reach out, don't hurt yourself and you are not alone.
Tim Gunn, you were always and will be always not just the man with class but also an examplary human being with a lot of compassion, love and a big sense of fairness. Admirable.
+calm the trans women. I hope this doesnt sound mean, but just saying: the trans, takes away the full impact of her identity. Her being trans* is just a facet of her experience. And her name is Laverne Cox, btw. Isnt she lovely? ♡
Wow... when you see him on Project Runway so realized and confident with himself, it´s hard to grasp that he grew up in a very different world and had to go through so much unnecessary pain. I admire him even more now.
I adore him! Man, to have survived those pressures during that time is remarkable. I'm sure many men just suppressed it and started families with women, then they had kids to worry about, knowing they were living a lie, etc. Tim is very lucky to have had this mentor, and clearly very gracious.
Thank you Tim, thank you. At last I'm going to understand a bit more of myself. A deep sigh of relief is going true my heart. Now I understand my passion for old-school fashion. Now I understand why I like, who I like and who I love. (A smile is now blossoming in my heart.) Age doesn't mind at all indeed.. thanks Tim... thanks! Big hug from me which nickname is the Don.
My heart felt broken listening to all that immense pain. I knew at 6 years that I was different and outside of others. Found the reason years later- I am both alcoholic and have ADHD. Our society does not deal well with people who are different
I love Mr. Gunn! My wife got me hooked on Project Runway (a show I NEVER thought I would like - but now, love) and feel like I have gotten to know Tim after watching about 5 seasons or so. We are going to watch them all over the next year or two. Also - went to NY (we are in San Diego) and got to take a stroll through Mood and meet Swatch! Thanks Mooooood! Thanks Tim! Class act human being with a heart as big as a mountain.
How very courageous of you to share your remarkable story with a public audience; so that others will not have to go through the self doubt and torture that you did. I am so glad that your life is 'Full'. and that you are in a good place!
I really love Tim supporting participants of Project Runway show, his testimony is really moving and inspiring! I like before, but now I love more, thanks for share this story life!
Hey, I greatly admire and respect Tim Gunn! Fashion and style are my burning passion, and Tim is brilliant and classy to me, and I greatly admire his designs. Even more so do I admire Tim himself for being true to himself with class, style and dignity. He is about 2 years my senior. Believe him when he tells you things were very, very different back in The Day, for that is utterly true! Tim and many others of his generation (including me, a transwoman), prevailed. Life is beautiful! High on my Bucket List is to meet and, ultimately, have either a social lunch or dinner with Tim Gunn and, mayhaps, even become his friend. Tim, you rock! Thanks for being you! Peace & Joy
What a beautiful story. Was pretty hard to keep in the tears throughout. But can we give it to Dr. Goldblatt? If not for him we may never have had Tim Gunn for this long.
Thank you so much Tim. You are such a great role model. I grew up in the 60s and was lucky that I wasn’t beaten up and bullied but others were. You are a ray of hope. ❤🙏😊
Awesome! To go through all that and still be such a great guy is just wonderful. I grew up in the 70's and 80's, so much of this is familiar to me; his generation had it worse, my generation didn't have it good either. It's still not easy for kids today. But my old high school has had a GSA for many years now, and recently, there was a same-sex prom date in my old school district. So there is _some_ progress, and hope that it'll get better. - For today's teens: Yes, there's a conservative backlash and regression now. This may be sort of a last gasp for the phobes, or it may stay rough a while. Please know you DO have allies and there are other LGBT teens around, probably struggling just as much as you are with how to deal with it, and not open about it yet. Please know that there are LGBT adults out there who know what it's like because we've been through it. Whether you come out now or wait until after high school, know that things will get better eventually. You just have to get through today and tomorrow and keep going.
Mr. Tim Gunn is the EPITOME of class.

yes
Tim Gunn has such a gorgeous soul. I feel like he would spin some great yarns over a few glasses of pinot.
This brought tears to my eyes. It's a glimmer of hope for anyone who's been down, bullied, depressed, etc.
You have to respect someone like Tim. It had to be difficult for him; especially back then.
I love people all over the world get to see Tim. He's a true gentleman and a rolemodel.

You never really know someone until you let them tell their own story. What a lovely person Tim Gunn is.

I really wish I knew Tim personally he seems like an interesting guy to talk to.
Incredibly touching. Thank god things are changing, no one should have to suffer a childhood like that.
I admire the way in which he expresses himself.
I could listen to him talk all day! I wish he was a professor at my university. His voice is so relaxing!
Soooooooo true
What a gentleman, so nice and handsome, I want to look just like him when I'm his age.

A class act. Impeccable. Grace itself
Tim Gun is such a special human being, there is no word out there to describe this gorgeous man xxx
what a fascinating person.
I understand exactly what he means when he said he felt tired. Ive been tired to so many years.
When i took the pills and woke up alive with my boyfriend, best friend, sisters and parents there I realized that this is not how my life is ending. All of them was there and was scared for my life.
