    You know what would have been REALLY cool? If they let people CUSTOM BUILD this set with 40 of their own choices as long as the films were all currently in print and under license from Criterion.
    So go for a plain semi-blank or non-specific packaging....and let people custom build THEIR 40 films to include in it.
    THAT would have been something special. To say hey...War of the Worlds, Godzilla, The Blob, Night of the Living Dead, Following, The Breakfast Club, The Princess Bride, etc etc
    I know that would have been a bit of a logistical nightmare...but it would have been wild and I think a LOT of people would have bit. Especially those looking for a chance to get a great package deal on a bunch of titles they've never purchased.

    Personally my only gripe with this is that it's a box set of movies you can get individually for an AESTHETIC value. To me the point of a collection is that it looks visually impressive. I would much rather have on my shelves the individual editions with their spines all showing. Maybe this is for boxset enthusiasts and not really for those collecting Criterion?

    • @FilmsByColor
      @FilmsByColor  Před měsícem +1

      Exactly! This was another point I meant to mention. Even if I didn’t already own half of these titles, I would still prefer to collect the individual releases for all the care that goes into the art and packaging of each one. I do like box sets, but I prefer boxsets that collect a filmmaker’s work. The randomness of this one doesn’t appeal to me.

  • @TheVid54

    Criterion's Christmas cash grab. You can get these blu-rays individually with better packaging - often at at a better price - some titles are probably available, or will be, in 4k editions from other labels. Criterion continues to disappoint. Maybe you can sucker a friend or relative to gift it for the holidays. Frankly, a subscription to the Criterion channel is a better option and you can check out which of the films randomly included aren't worth owning

    • @DarkInception
      @DarkInception Před 28 dny

      @@carywhittYes, hobbies have a start up cost, but most hobbies will try to deliver the “fundamentals” at somewhat of a value.
      If you’re getting into comics for example, trade paperbacks are an affordable way to collect entire stories without having to hunt or pay the steep cost of back issues. Music labels frequently drop greatest hits re release. In card games they have starter decks. You get the idea.
      Yes, there is a start up cost for any hobby. But the idea is you want newcomers to have easy accessibility. This boxset, is more expensive than most newcomers would pay, and yet redundant for their existing audience, so they won’t buy it either.

    This is a weird box set to me. New collectors like me aren’t generally looking for things like these. I don’t even know 80% of the films in this set and I wouldn’t do a major blind buy of that many movies. I mean I’d accept it as a gift but I wouldn’t seek it out myself.

    I actually only have 5 of these films, so I don’t feel like it would be that redundant for me. But that’s beside the point because … hundreds of dollars no matter when or how you get it. But part of me feels like I’d like to have the individual releases. However, I will say that almost all of these movies are ones I’d like to have or wouldn’t mind having, and many of them are films I might not be that motivated to get individually, and it’d be cool to have a way to get them along with others that I’d definitely want otherwise. It’d be cool, but probably not.

  • @HenryLaPierre
    @HenryLaPierre Před měsícem

    Collectors that buy Criterions most likely already have enough of the included titles to justify making a purchase worthwhile, and those new to Criterion are not going to drop the asking price (even at what B&N asks at their bi-annual sales) in one shot in any sort of numbers that would make this release a success. As to those mentioning the packaging, imo the individual releases are preferable to the obvious cardboard slots this will use that just scream scratches. My one positive on this is that there aren't any included exclusives to this release that will make Criterion (film) completists like myself contemplate picking it up. Easy pass.

    This is a reaction to an older video ( This with "Rumble Fish" and "Flight of the Phoenix" ), sorry. Moin from SH in Germany! I have seen you today for the first time with the Criterion Design book video. Now I would like to react to your shopping. First the film high on the left side in the picture: "Afire" with the wonderful Paula Beer! Also seeing the classic "Blow up" below it, it reminds me of the fantastic "Blow out". There is seen - only for a moment - the cover of "Come and see"!!! What is about the "remake" of "Cat People" with the beauty and talent of Nastassja Kinski known from the Wenders materpiece "Paris, Texas" with Karen Black's son Hunter Carson? "Badlands" from Malik !!! I see "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" by Altman! "The last Metro" is a gem. "Dogfight" with Lili Taylor is good. "Cul-de-sac" even better. "Die freudlose Gasse", "Tagebuch einer Unbekannten" and "Die Dreigroschenoper" by Pabst from the pre-Nazi area! "Black Moon" with the great Therese Giehse, who is also in Malle's "Lacombe, Lucien", which is, beside of "Atlantic City" and the also fine "Alamo Bay", one of my favorites. Sirk's movies are also: "A Time to Love and a Time to Die", "Interlude", "The Tarnished Angels", "Written on the Wind" and "Imitation of Life" and his two movies with the wonderful Zarah Leander from Sweden "La Habanera" and "To New Shores"! Try to find Peter Lorre's "Der Verlorene ( The Lost One )" from 1951 not only acting but also director. Favorite Hitchcocks of mine are: "Torn Curtain", "Topaz" and "Family Plot". I love "High Society" - musical remake and - by George Cukor "Heller in Pink Tights", "Bhowani Junction" and "A Star is Born" with Garland and James Mason. "Rumble Fish" is great: the cast (stars also Diane Lane, Mickey Rourke, Dennis Hopper and Tom Waits - l love his total work) , the music, the mood and the possibility to compair it with Coppola's "The Outsiders" or even "One from the Heart" - all three are fine movies. Do you know "Volver" by Almodovar? Have you seen "The Virgin Spring"? I love also Bergman's " The Serpent’s Egg ", "Det sjunde inseglet" from 1957, " Sommarnattens leende " 1955 and the best of his movies - 1982's - " Fanny och Alexander"! "True Stories" is by Talking Heads group member David Byrne - their and his music are even much better: watch the concert movies "Stop making sense" and "American Utopia" - both among the best ever ( John Goodman in Joe Dante's "Matinee"?). Wenders, and then Pasolini and Fassbinder ( here with his last one "Querelle" - but please watch "Fear eats Soul"! - becauce of "All That Heaven Allows" and the very good "Far from Heaven") side by side. About "Insignificance": Theresa Russell and Michael Emil as Monroe and Einstein compaired to Michelle Williams and Walter Matthau in later movies!?! I love "Hidden Fortress" - not so much "Star Wars". Weired but good ones like "Naked", "The Night Porter" - and "Sid and Nancy" in the background - and also - the best ever - "Onibaba"! "Tom Jones" is only a joy. The classic silent "La passion de Jeanne d’Arc" is realy one of the best ever. Coen's "Miller's Crossing" is one of their bests ( have you seen Albert Finney in "Wolfen" or - yes - "Tom Jones"?). " The Flight of the Phoenix" has also Hardy Krüger, who's character is the biggest surprise. And James Stewart in all his fantastic Westerns by Anthony Mann? You both and your children ... stay gold. Regards from Germany SH Jörg

    I think it’s a nice set. It is good for beginners that only have say a couple of criterion movies in their collection because the bang for the buck is really really good. It’s currently like $16 a movie and you could possibly get it for under $10 a movie come November. Also a great gift for that budding film nut. Either way, this is not bad at all.

    Here’s a question since everyone’s referring to casual collectors or new collectors concerning this set. What’s the number of criterion movies that makes you a beginner collector, or a novice collector, or a hard-core collector?

    • @HenryLaPierre
      @HenryLaPierre Před měsícem +1

      Not sure of the number, but I consider those CZcamsrs who only buy the English language mainstream Hollywood type releases the collection puts out to be casuals. You know the ones, they publish a video of their hauls and they're all identical (Raging Bull, Thelma & Louise, After Hours, Risky Business... the list goes on). It's refreshing when you have a channel like this or James over at 20th and 21st Movies talk about foreign films or those outside the norm.
      Novice, I'd say those without a large number of releases, but open to any release.
      Hardcore, maybe those who've without thinking twice, let their love of film take them down all the various rabbit holes the collection allows. Also, completists :)

    Saw this yesterday absolutely ridiculous lol. These sets will sit for a longgg time. People might by when the drop to around $399. Furthermore it is the most popular films in the collection meaning everyone already has them or most of them. This set will essentially only be marketed to beginners in Criterion and out of that market not many will drop $800 or even $600 on a criterion set. Also most people getting into criterion want the many different standards covers they sell individually to start a shelf of Criterion not just 1 boxset to put somewhere on the top of everyones shelf because it is too big. I think this will be a big fail from Criterion. If it ever drops to $300 I might snag one but thats it.
