    This may be over the limit for this modified Singer 201k. The feed dogs leave marks on the leather. With some of my other trials here, the high friction between the leather and the needle could lift the presser foot (with max pressure here) causing skipt stitches.
    A new modification to the Singer 201 was introduced regarding feed dog timing. This is a video about that: • Timing of Feed Dogs Mo... . The advance in feed timing is no problem for thick fabrics, but for fabrics below 1.5 mm under the foot, it causes increased variation in stitch balance. This problem is discussed in detail in this video: • One Stitch by Sewing M...

    I think over time it will have an effect on other parts, the stress would be passed along the moving parts that will cause wear and damage,
    They design the machine for certain thickness and type of materials, for the machine to last decades,
    But once the machine starts to push its limits the parts get stressed with heat and wear,which leads to damage,
    I know its just to see what you can adjust the machine to do, but short term can actually lead to long term damage,
    It is amazing what some of the old house hold machines were capable off in the days,
    I have many singer industrial machines the old classics and they are work horses,

      You are not the only one, that have warned me about this. I can say, that the machine have sewn 2500 m of M20 thread on similar fabrics, and I have not yet seen any sign of wear or damage. These kind of machines are cheap to get in my country, and I like the machine to occupy little space and to be portable. Therefore I am OK with the possible small risk of damage.

    Wow ! I was told they can sew leather but not that thick , yes you modified it but to go threw that thick was amazing for that machine ...nice job

      I myself have been amazed at how heavy materials this machine can sew However the feed dogs do leave marks on leather surface. The original electrical motors (including the potted motors) are weak and do not reveal the real heavy potential of this machine. I have not yet seen wear after sewing mostly heavy vinyl with 2000 m of Tex 135 thread.
      More people in forums will tell you, that this machine is not designed for heavy work like this. It may be true, but my interest is, what it can do for at least some projects and hobby use. In my country you can get these machines cheep if you wait for them. And it is easy to transport to a job elsewere and it do not take up much space in an appartment.

      Ya im in canada and for 50 bucks i can pick up singers all day long so when people say oh you shouldnt do that you will wreck it , well then i will buy another for cheep and fix mine and have a whole machine for spare parts , i get what you were trying to show people here , that the old machines are more tuff then rthey needed to be and you dont need to spend 700 bucks on a machine for hobbies . I think this video was great and informitive and saves me from experimenting, ive always been told by my mother that singers will sew anything and you showed that , yes you did some mods but still did it with a home machine not an industrialized one .

      @sewingmachinesindetail is your machine modified or can I use Amann Serafil 20 thread on any Singer 201?

    Thanks!! I notice the machine sometimes struggles..but i think that's normal with the thick leather.. but my 201 struggles already with two not thick layers of canvas..cant start with two hands.. always have to help the wheel. Otherwise i won't move ..

      Industrial combined feed sewing machines for leather are of cause better to use. If you are able to make a speed reducer, the low gear will make it easier for the motor to drive heavy work of the machine. I made a video about the speed reducer. A new stronger motor do also help.

    Thank you for your very interesting videos! Do you think the Singer 201 is better than most other domestic machines for these modifications, or are there others you know of that might need less modifications for heavy work?

    • @sewingmachinesindetail
      @sewingmachinesindetail  Před rokem +1

      I think the most difficult modification to this machine is to change the motor drive. In this case it is done with a DIY speed reducer, replaced motor and DIY electronics. It may be easier to adapt an industrial servo motor for these sewing machines, but then you need a table dedicated for the machine. Yes, I think the Singer 201 is better than most household sewing machines for this. But you got a large group of sewing machines produced by many manufacturers like the Pfaff 30 and Singer 15, that could be modified in similar manner, and I think most of them will perform like the 201. I made a video that includes the Pfaff 30. I did also do a video about a Husqvarna Viking 6010. It is part of a group of machines produced by Husqvarna from about 1950-1980. They all got an extra low gear, that give them the good low speed control and power. However, these machines are more difficult to service and repair. I think this group of Husqvarna Viking sewing machines are the most versatile household sewing machines, that you can get. But the modified Singer 201 can manage heavier thread and fabrics better than these machines.

    I'm having a hard time finding the 140 x 22 needles. Where did you get yours?

    • @sewingmachinesindetail
      @sewingmachinesindetail  Před 4 lety

      The needle system is HAx1 - normal domestic sewing machine needles. The size 22/140 needles with regular point can be supplied from many suppliers - look e-bay. I only found one supplier for 22/140 needles with leather point. It is this ebay supplier from Germany: www.ebay.de/itm/Nadeln-130-705-LR-140-er-zum-LEDER-nahen-20-NAHNADELN/112170380582?hash=item1a1de02d26:g:71sAAOxy63FSzw2n&fbclid=IwAR1S3H_jmAGMZ4ApnwbEukxb91aCjZRB9kTQmVX_qUVEpWwcbASK58RIghc

    Sir,
    What thread is best used with a Singer 201 to sew leather?
    I recently bought one and would love to be able to use it!
    Thank you!

      I use an Amann Serafil 20 thread in this video. Sewing machines like this thread, because it got low friction. The Singer 201 is a household machine, so it is not best for leather, and therefore I think a good thread for the machine can help. I do also know, that Serafil thread is used for high profile leather furniture. Amann threads are mostly used in Europe and can be hard to get in the US. However most leatherworkers use bonded nylon thread in their industrial leather machines.

      @@sewingmachinesindetail Thank you for your reply sir! I appreciate your time! I will see if I can find some of the thread that you recommend. I bought the machine to do hobby type leatherwork, not production. I just want to make a few wallets to give to friends and family. Any other help will be a great benefit!
      Take care sir!

      Hi Michael. I am not familiar with this machine. I suggest that you ask at Leaterworker.com. This is one seller of the inside cogged belt. It can be difficult to replace. www.ebay.com/itm/265520880850

    How we can remove feed dog dot's from leather?

    • @sewingmachinesindetail
      @sewingmachinesindetail  Před 2 lety +1

      I do not think this problem can be much improved, when a drop feed machine like this is used. Then you need to accept some marks. You may try with another set of feed dogs with not so sharp teeth, but it will reduce feed traction. Therefore real triple feed sewing machines are better for this kind of leather jobs.

    • @sewingmachinesindetail
      @sewingmachinesindetail  Před 2 lety +1

      One more comment. The used presser foot with the notch to the back did help on the marks already in this test. Both this foot and the advanced feed timing do help regarding this problem. So if you did not do that already, then it can be a way to do some improvement.

    This whole channel is not showing HOW to modify, it's just showing the results of your modification. ALmost completely useless for anyone looking to do the same to theirs.

    • @sewingmachinesindetail
      @sewingmachinesindetail  Před 2 lety +2

      I am sorry, that you do not find the channel helpful. Some workmanship knowledge and experience is needed to do most of the proposed modifications like how to grind and polish metal parts. It is my impression, that more of my viewers got that, or will show the video to a handyman friend for help. The main focus of the channel is to explain the problems involved with sewing machines and more heavy use of them. And to show what can be achieved. Can I ask you to write about one example of a modification you would like to see?
