This poem (song) describes a dream that the speaker had about an old man who couldn't sleep and spent the night watching the rain. The old man shared with the speaker his wisdom about the beauty and ugliness that exists in people, and how we can learn from our mistakes and pain. Although the old man has disappeared, his words have left a lasting impact on the speaker. The speaker suggests that if anyone else finds themselves unable to sleep at midnight, they can come to him and he will share the old man's wisdom with them. The poem seems to suggest that even though the world can be filled with both beauty and ugliness, it is possible to find meaning and understanding in the midst of it all. The midnight summer dream represents a moment of insight and clarity, and the speaker wants to share that with others who may be struggling to find their way.
We all start out as babies and all have to get old, it’s a sad life but many don’t live to grow old but die young,so,could say were the lucky ones who are old.
the art of life is keeping in rhythm with your age. Just keep right on to the end of the road. Hold those memories that make you smile. I remembered yesterday throwing little sweet rappers in a ball at me mate and saying 'Lightning bolt!' like a nerd and him getting pissed off at me. Just makes me laugh to remember. I get the pain though, it's just necessary to look back and be inspired rather than beset.
Classic Stranglers...not conforming to musical doctrine...just doing their own thing...building layers of melody...so talented..... Best band ever bar none...
Love this version, where Hugh sings the second half of the song, instead of the album version where singing falls into background of the spoken verses. Maybe I love it because it is different from what we used to hear. Ah, whatever! This is a timeless piece of music!
I've liked your comment for your liking of the Stranglers mate but you you must have a special album of Feline cis it's the same version I have on Feline album
I loved this song from the first time I heard it. They hardly played it on the radio and I must’ve heard it on a college radio station back then and record it on tape. Bc I remember listening to this song in the summer of 1983 on my Sony Walkman 2 with the minimal push buttons. Back when finding a great song was kind of hard and hard to hunt down. Each time I come across a Stranglers album or cd, I flip it over to see if this song was on it and I never seen it till this day. It must be on ep or something. Listening to this song is like floating on a cloud.
Woke up on a good day And the world was wonderful A midnight summer dream had me in its spell. I dreamt about an old man Sat and watched the rain all night He couldn't sleep a wink as all the drops fell. He told me of the beauty Hidden in our foreheads He told me of the ugliness We show instead. And when we put a foot wrong do we learn From all the pain A midnight summer dream as he watched the rain. Then at midnight he poured another drink And bent my ear After midnight we sat up half the night Or maybe more And he began to tell me what it was all for I woke up in an armchair He had gone i don't know where Left me there to sit and look at the rain Don't remember much at all But his words were echoing A midnight summer dream and then wake again. Maybe I'll never find him Maybe he's gone forever Maybe I'll have to sit here Watching weather. One thing's pretty certain helped me Make it in the night Showed me somewhere else besides wrong and right And at midnight if you can't sleep Then I can bend your ear After midnight we'll sit up half the night Or maybe more And I'll begin to tell you what it is all for. Wake up on a good day and the world Feels wonderful Midnight summer dream has me in its spell.
One of their greatest lyrics, telling a darkly haunting tale, beautifully given visuals in the video. And don't Dave Greenfield's melody line & keys give the song a mesmeric, otherworldy feel? Helluva bassline from J.J. too. Such a masterpiece.
Feline is one of the most truly beautiful dreams of an album EVER. It makes me fly to any destination in the world I wish while I close my eyes and feel the music enter my blood and soul +
Reminds me of a time in my life when i was a young man just starting to opening his eyes. So deep and so beautiful................................................... aaaahhhh! the memories.
I've absolutely adored The Stranglers since I first heard of them 35 years ago. It's hard to choose from so many awesome tracks, but this would have to be my favourite.
Walking Civil War because no real fan would choose this, you are just jumping on the band wagon and trying to sound like a true fan, I can see right through you, best if you keep your comments to yourself.
thehomefront you sound like a gobby oaf. It's one of their finest songs and this comes from someone whose favorite Stranglers era is circa The Raven. Also, there isn't a bandwagon on which to jump, it's not like they've suddenly become super popular
I wonder if these guys ever recieved any medals. They deserve many... Saw them in my hometown Ghent, Belgium once, when Dave was still alive. Waw. What a band... Their music is mesmerizing. Can you hear me mr Cornwell ? I'm such a fan...
Honestly, this makes me feel like the 7yo me watching the stars and city lights through the window until I fall asleep in the back of our family car traveling home from summer vacation in 4am, and waiting for the car to get warmer, listening to this song.
Gute, alte 80er!
Didn't realise there was a video for this, although I stopped collecting their singles after La Folie. Superb song, great video - the lovely old house almost looks like the same place where the classic front cover photo of Rattus could've been shot...
My father who sadly passed, used to listen to the Strangler's all the time. Followed them on tour. A man grounded and stout. A punk, but reflective. The line here "he is gone forever, maybe I'll never find him, we all have to sit here watching weather" just sums up the feeling. He's gone. There's no heaven we can sit and chat again, but we stay behind watching the rain.
SAW THEM LIVE....HAD A GOOD POSITIVE CHAT.... GOOD BUNCH OF BLOKE'S... CHRIS BORN IN BRIGHTON ... AND AN A MAZING NIGHT WITH ALL OUR FRIENDS... BAND BRILLIANT
This sounds so very Goth.. I never knew much about goth music back in the 80's. It was all punk to me at the time. But looking back , if you ask me. This sounds like the perfect Goth type song.

I used to think it was a spooky song where he was the old man in the future.

As a young man my life stretched before me, now I am the old man watching the rain run down the window pane like the unseen tears in my heart.

This one is a bloody masterpiece! Just as many of their songs, to be fair! RIP Dave, you will be missed.
Great lyrics. Gets better every time I hear it. Hugh Cornwell makes the spoken part unpretentious. Fantastic effort.

Woke up on a good day
And the world was wonderful
A midnight summer dream had me in its spell.
I dreamt about an old man
Sat and watched the rain all night
He couldn't sleep a wink as all the drops fell.
He told me of the beauty
Hidden in our foreheads

And when we put a foot wrong do we learn
From all the pain
A midnight summer dream as he watched the rain.
Then at midnight he poured another drink
And bent my ear
After midnight we sat up half the night
Or maybe more
And he began to tell me what it was all for
I woke up in an armchair
He had gone i don't know where
Left me there to sit and look at the rain
Don't remember much at all
But his words were echoing
A midnight summer dream and then wake again.
Maybe I'll never find him
Maybe he's gone forever
Maybe I'll have to sit here
Watching weather.
One thing's pretty certain helped me
Make it in the night
Showed me somewhere else besides wrong and right
And at midnight if you can't sleep
Then I can bend your ear
After midnight we'll sit up half the night
Or maybe more
And I'll begin to tell you what it is all for.
Wake up on a good day and the world
Feels wonderful
Midnight summer dream has me in its spell.

The bassline its so crazy. Brilliant. One of the best bassline of 80,s.
One of the very best by this phenomenal group. Absolutely love the stranglers. RIP Dave and Jett.
There are two types of pain in this world-the pain of discipline and the pain of regret.
This is a great example of Stranglers at their best. Atmospheric video . The best times were up till when Hugh left the group.
Rest in Peace Dave Greenfield, thank you for the music and the awesome keyboard tunes.
One of his best songsss

What the hell? how did i ever miss this superb musical wizardry? That pulsing synth line is so gorgeously haunting ! love this to death!
