A-Line Los Angeles: Scariest Metro Line in the World? A Brit's Experience 🇬🇧🇺🇸

- I took a ride from The Civic Center in Downtown LA to Downtown Long Beach. The route took me through Watts, Compton and other 'hoods' that, when I was growing up in the 90's, had serious reputations of gang violence, race riots, poverty hardship and some of the best rappers the West Coast has produced.
This is the land of NWA, Suge Knight, Rodney King, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lemar and the Williams sisters. In LA (and many parts of the US) there is a stigma against public transport amongst many people. Some say it is for poor people only, that it's impractical, dirty and dangerous. Let's go and find out
That is not 7th Street; it's Washington Boulevard from Flower Street to Long Beach Avenue.
Glad that somebody else caught that and it wasn't just me.
Ahh OK, my bad. Thanks for letting me know
People make mistakes. It's not the end of the world.

Success is not built on success. It's built on failure, it's built on frustration, it's built on fear that you have to overcome. I pray that everyone who reads this remains successful in life.
Been riding the LA Metro for over 20 years, I can confidently say that it's never been better. While there may still be room for improvement, many of the issues we face aren't necessarily due to shortcomings in the metro system itself, but rather stem from broader economic and societal problems that need to be addressed. And remember: unhoused individuals often congregate in major cities like Los Angeles because they are drawn by the same factors that attract everyone else: more opportunities.
I'm glad it's heading in the right direction (excuse the pun) and you're absolutely correct with your comment 👍
Yes, well said. I noticed the improvements too when I rode several lines on 5-16-24 including the B and D lines. The rides were free on the LA Metro on this day to commemorate Bike to Work day, but didn't see any more bikes than normal.
Used the opportunity to have some pastrami at Langers. It had been a minute since I was last there. Delicious as always.
What does this comment even mean? Never better? You can’t gloss over the safety issue on trains just because the network is expanding. Safety and rider experience have regressed significantly over the last 5 years and you know it. I am a regular rider on the E Line and it was a whole different experience 5+ years ago. Now, it’s a camp for the homeless. Have you not seen the videos of what the police and sheriffs have to deal with when the trains arrive in Santa Monica? Metro does a terrible job of enforcing fares and they are doing a feeble job of getting these people off of trains. What good does it do to just let them ride all the way to Santa Monica before you kick them off? It just disproportionately heaps the burden of dealing with these people on the city of Santa Monica.
You must be the PR person for metro.
This brings back bad memories. I moved to LA without a car and rode the bus/metro for months. Always an adventure, sometimes with real violence. The driver will do nothing to help.
I imagine the driver's instructed to avoid confrontation...I was told a story about someone asking the bus driver to let him off somewhere between stops. The driver refuses and the dude pulled out a strap. Driver was armed and started shooting back - he lost his job
Nothing bad happened on his trip. People talking loud or playing loud music is annoying, but it's not bad.
@@mrxman581 I know. Just reminds of a time the "loud music people" knocked someone out just for kicks and pushed him off the bus unconscious. It happened very quickly. Bus driver saw everything, stopped for a second, and then just kept going. Some Korean tourists sitting in back (big mistake) looking like horrified. I got off next stop and went back to look for dude but I guess he woke up.
@@MattBianco-rv8meI haven't ridden an LA Metro bus in decades, but it seems the latest crimes being reported on LA Metro, since Covid happened, have more to do with mentally ill homeless people. More officers or security guards need to be on the trains or buses. At least, on the lines that have the most violence.
I've taken the A-Line a few times to Long Beach (back when it was still the Blue Line). Maybe I just got lucky, but I've never encountered anyone concerning.
Good to hear!
Its hit or miss. At night its a lot more wacky
Scariest metro line in the world? The Chicago CTA green line night shift and Philadelphia’s Kensington Station would like a word.
You should come down to Los angeles and ride the green line
Ah I've never been to either of those cities, if I do go I'll be sure to check them out, maybe 😆

Wow, Matt, that makes our LRT look pretty tame! I've never had to get off the train because of police activity, but I still avoid making eye contact and never ride alone in the evenings especially on the weekend. Love your parting comments on how it's improved! Stay safe!
Shame that it's like that on public transport! In the so-called first world, everyone should feel safe at any time!
Thank you for sharing your experience. I have never been to LA.
Safe travels.
Thanks Catherine! 😊
Cheers again Matt. Rode that line a few times in 2003/04. Not a lot has changed to be honest. Safe travels bud 🤙🏼
You'd think after 20 years it might be better! Thanks mate!

Take it easy,maybe 😊
Man, anxiety levels through the roof 😅 keep safe bro.
The next video is gonna be even worse I'm afraid 😆
Hi Matt, what a scary ride! Lots of angry voices. Good job they didn't realize you were filming. You are fearless! Take care and stay safe! 😊
Thanks girls, I dunno about fearless, foolish maybe 😆,
This is really racist language but cool lady
😂😂😂 I was not prepared for this, this morning I nearly pissed myself laughing at your annotations 😂

Some crazy people were traveling with you on the train, and with an unintelligible language from the slums🤣😢🤣. I managed to hear a woman who spoke in Spanish. very good video Matt, you should carry a hidden camera to film those crazy people.😂😀👏👏👏👏
Thanks mate, I might have to buy a hidden camera, it would be safer 😅
Another excellent sharing my friend 🧡
omg sounds like craziness on the bus matt don't blame you for keeping the camera facing the window!
I used to take the the A-Line to the beach back when it was called the Blue Line. Even back then we thought it was bad but nothing really happened. As soon as I got a car though, I never took the train or bus again.
I can see why 99% of people would rather drive!
Hello friend , been to LA many times but never took the metroline... Thanks for sharing and reminding . Have a safe stay in CA 👍😍🥰💕❤👋
Thank you 😁
Haven’t tried the metro in LA but ur particular ride seems to be interesting and kinda scary…now it makes me think if I should even try it 😂
I can see why most people hire a car 😆
The LA Metro is fine. He says as much at the end of the video.
Remember, the title and purpose of the video. It's obviously not the most dangerous line in the world based on what he showed in the video.
Abd, relatively speaking, this is probably the worst line in LA Metro. It's also the oldest of all the lines. It opened in 1990. That was the beginning of the modern LA Metro of today.
Also, you could have gotten off of that car and gone to a different one. I've used the trains for years, your experience was exceptional.
I'd have to disagree there about my experience being exceptional. I've taken the Metro many times to Hollywood and Santa Monica and had many strange/unnerving encounters. Maybe I'm just unlucky!
I agree. I just took the A line to the E line to the Festival of Books at USC and it was perfectly fine. The only issue I had on my return trip was a woman who got on playing loud music on a portable speaker for two stops.
There were several passengers with bikes too, but I didn't have a problem with it.
We have been to LA quite a few times but never yet tried the Metro. Apart from one noisy guy it did not seem too bad. May be totally different late evening though. We have tried public transport in several US cities and always without incident, although we have felt a bit uneasy at times. Stay safe and keep enjoying your adventure.
Thank you! It really isn't a pleasant experience...but it's a cheap way to get around town!
Generally, its ok during the day, but a lot of the security stops working after night
Nice Ride My Friend 😎 have a great weekend ❤🙋♂
Thank you 😁
By Golly that`s scary, I do have social anxiety and people shouting and ready to go at it any moment will stop me from breathing out of fear. You are a tough cookie.
It`s interesting they should announce what number to call incase of emergency, I'm sure they do have loads of emergency given the attitude people have and the I don`t give a F mentality.
There seems to be so many boarded up buildings at the start of the video, why would such prime estate be boarded?
Please keep sharing but at the same time, stay safe
California has TAXED small businesses so much none can earn a decent living to compensate for the investment, especially in a city that doesn't prosecute crime... Go woke, go broke!
You can quickly change cars when it stops if it's uncomfortable for you.
No, the announcements are simply informational. Not necessarily because there is a lot of violence.
The stores you see at the beginning are not necessarily shuttered. That's a commercial/industrial area of downtown, not retail. However, many businesses didn't survive Covid, but things are on the upswing again.
It's a very different world to Switzerland for sure Rika. A lot of the city centre is closed because people live and work in different areas, there are lots of no-go areas downtown
Never been to LA, but have been on the New York Subway before and it was a pretty similar experience to what you had. Maybe its just a big city metro problem, but both metro systems make the tube network seem like a first class train experience.
I've heard that about NYC, and recently they had to get the National Guard in to patrol the trains as the situation was getting so severe! Can you imagine the British Army having to patrol the Underground? Crazy
Just a bit too raw and scary for me...but it's a shame that this is the way that many have to live their life each and every day and have no choice in the matter. Makes one be very thankful and wish too that help was available to all in need.
Absolutely agree Bruce, I wouldn't want to be commuting in that every day and especially at night!
Long Beach is such an upgrade over Los Angeles! such nice and clean Downtown
You be trippin' takin' dat ride, G. (English: That was brave of you to make that trip, mate)

Great metro ride.
Interesting ride , Cheers 🍺🍺
Thanks Bip 😁
As an angeleno, Idk why I experienced so much second-hand embarrassment from this. I’m so sorry you had to experience that, but also admirable how brave you are in taking our deplorable public transit system.
I'm travelling overland on public transport all the way to Argentina, I figure if I can't do it in LA there's not much chance I'll be able to do it in Honduras and Ecuador haha
Great share!
I was on the Montreal metro earlier this week when three (out of four in total) lines were shut down because of an “incident majeur”. We followed directions to leave the train, but the vast majority of us refused to leave the platform when asked because we wanted to be first in line when the trains started running again. This happens a lot. We know the drill. And the three or four STM security staff knew better than to mess with a few hundred stubborn passengers.
It turned out that there was a fight on the platform at the station where the three lines cross and someone was attacked with cayenne pepper. At least it wasn’t a suicide, or an overdose, or some idiot trying to retrieve a phone they dropped on the tracks.
I take the metro all the time, and have ridden public transit in other places for years. It’s totally safe if you keep your distance from anyone or anything you deem unusual.
all the north america trains has some weridos on the trains. not just in particuar city like people made it out to be, last time I ride metro E line and the train get stucked on the track for 30+ min, because some person decide to lingering on the track and wont move even after the police came.
Made me laugh to hear a Brit say “too ghetto” … love it 😂
Hood movies can only teach you so much 😆
Those warning broadcasts don’t make you feel very safe do they? Sounds lively! We definitely need spy cams for this type of footage. I’m getting some pretty challenging looks trying to film certain types for my new series with a GoPro, whilst always courting the fact that would make a great video too. Great translations on the ghetto speak tho! 😂kids and their ghettoblasters, making us vloggers life’s difficult!
Ahhh you've got me intrigued now Nick, I'm looking forward to seeing what this new series is! I was thinking of getting a spy cam of some kind, good thinking
@@no_soy_rubioHow about those eyeglasses with a hidden camera? Not sure how good the quality is or the length of video that can be recorded.

Transit wise, I think Japan leads good examples in many ways. Stay safe, Matt!
Definitely agree there 😁
the A Line ... Most Angelinos still refer to it as the "Blue Line" original route was from 7th/Metro Center to Long Beach. Since Metro has exteneed this line to Pasadena and Azusa, some of the riff-raff migrated out. When I used to live in LA, I didnt ride it that much because of all the riff-raff that goes on the train day-n-night. The safest option would be to take the Metro Bus J- Silver Line Pacific Coast Hwy Station and then the Metro Bus 232 to Downtown LB
Things are better throughout LA Metro in the last year since the end of Covid. They added the transit ambassadors and more security guards.
I rode the A line to the E line to the Festival of Books at USC and it was fine. No issues. I noticed a lot more people using both lines that day. It was good to see.
Just came across your channel. Great content mate. The LA metro is the pits! 🤢 not just the Blue line or A line as it's called now.. Still recall this, had my dad over from Australia and we took the then called Blue line, never seen dad's face look like that ever.. The scariest part is that just a few days ago some transient stabbed someone at random and killed her near the universal studios station. Certainly need to have your wits about you when riding the metro...
Thanks mate! I saw that about the Killing recently. A 66 year old woman saving to move back to Nicaragua. Grew up in a war torn country, worked her arse off to provide for her family and then to die like that is disgusting. And there's people in these comments defending the Metro and saying it's fine 🤦♂️
@no_soy_rubio It isn't a matter of defending Metro, it's about looking at it objectively. Yes, it was horrible that the woman was killed by the mentally ill homeless person. She was on the B Line around 5:30 am when there are a lot less people around, and this horrible person took advantage of that and killed her. They caught about a mile from the North Hollywood station. Apparently, he was well known to the regular riders and that helped to get him caught.
LA Metro is a transit agency. It's not a social service agency or police department. I would say 90% of the crime on Metro that has received a lot of attention in the last three weeks was caused by mentally ill homeless.
Having even more police from the recent increase from several months ago is just a bandaid. And even if you scare them off of the LA Metro, where do you think they're going? As long as the city and county social services agencies continue to treat these people with kid gloves it will take even longer to better deal with the mentally ill homeless situation. These people are incapable of making sound decisions for themselves. They need to be obligated to get the treatment they need.
They're homeless because they're mentally ill or suffer from substance abuse or both. People shouldn't expect LA Metro to fix it.
Wow that was quite a ride Matt I did enjoy just zoning out at the sights of LA speeding by
Hope your good mate
Stay safe bud 🤠🙏🏼

Cheers Simon, it was quite the ride indeed mate 😆
Have you been surreptitiously scrounging to afford that cool Lacoste polo? 😄 I should say panhandling, which is new word to me. There's always something to see and learn in your videos mate. I'm loving it. Cheers.🤩
Have you not seen the Bob Hope film in which he sung Silver Bells, the Lemon Drop Kid? Bob Hope panhandled throughout this film...
@@ronclark9724 😁Thanks for your observation, Ron. The use of the word "panhandle" as a verb meaning "to beg from strangers" originated in the US. I've not come across it in British English and I think I might get some strange looks were I to use it here.😆 Although Bob Hope was born in the UK, the film you mention is from 1951 and possibly only known here by specialist film buffs. I'm aware of the old "Road to" movies with Hope and Crosby, but old American comedy is not my forte. Maybe I'll check out your recommendation. 👍
Haha, I think it was a Xmas present! I've had a few polos in my time but they're not really suited to the usual hiking videos I do, which is why you'll usually see me in chavvy sportswear 🤣
I didn't know much about Bob Hope myself until I saw his name everywhere in California and did a little research. Seems like he was a great man! I've never heard the word panhandling in the UK either, but it's a good word, I like it
@@no_soy_rubio 🤣"chavvy", perfect word 🤣.
Also, there once were police officers ON the trains, but during the pandemic, budget cuts and early retirement, and the police department is currently 8,000 officers short staffed.
I have to say there were a lot of armed security (unlike my previous visit 18 months ago) and I actually saw them remove a man who was drunk and goading passengers on the B Line
They've hired additional armed security guards that are not police officers.
LA Metro is patrolled by LAPD, LBPD, LASD, and now security guards, too. LA Metro is looking into setting up their own in-house security force. BTW, they did have one decades ago.
Its not LA its every American city. I've been to all the important ones in the last five years and this crap is too common. Noise cancelling headphones are now mandatory for all public places, airliners, restaurants especially. I was in Guadalajara this year and shocked at the lack of vandalism and misbehavior on the transit system. I suspect Canada is worsening but still not nearly as bad as the US.
I'll probably see for myself in Guadalajara soon. I found the metro in Mexico City to be pretty decent, and very cheap!
NYC metro is probably the scariest I've ever been on. Being from Boston area, the Boston metro system is much "cleaner" and safer. I say "cleaner" in quotes since that's up for debate haha
Very common on west coast light rail vehicles. Seattle, Portland, San Diego, San Fransisco, Sacramento, and Los Angeles.
Ah really, I've only been on the BART and found that to be OK but I didn't use it much
Los Angeles also has two heavy rail subway lines. The D line is currently being extended to the Westside.

Aww thank you 😁 definitely mental health issues which unfortunately seem to get ignored by the authorities in the US. Thanks for your comment as always and have a great week 😁
@@no_soy_rubioIt's not necessarily ignored. It has to do more with laws. For example, you can't force a person with mental illness into treatment. It has to be voluntary. Same issue with the homeless. You can't forcibly remove homeless from public spaces. The Supreme Court is hearing a case exactly on that issue.
@mrxman581 I'm absolutely no expert on the issue but I have heard that many resources for helping the mentally ill have been taken away

I’ll admit I get a little embarrassed when I see a foreigner visiting LA riding on the Metro. I know that our transportation system can, and needs to be better. It’s getting there, but at a snail’s pace.
It does seem safer than it was before but still a lot of room for improvement!
The train journey would make a good ASMR kind of video. In a weird kind of way.

As someone who rides the LA Metro system when I’m in LA, I personally avoid riding the A Line before it travels south of downtown. Maybe there will be a time when I’ll ride it to Long Beach, but I prefer to avoid the stops that it travels along the way. I prefer getting a ride from someone if I’m going to Long Beach.
Yeah I was a but concerned about some of the areas, when I was a kid growing up in the UK you'd see Watts and Compton on TV and it looked terrifying, but apparently it's a lot more gentrified nowadays. Sadly it seems not many places are safe, someone stabbed a lady to death at the Metro stop for Universal Studios, and a few days ago someone was shot in Pasadena!
@@no_soy_rubio rising crime on the transit system has also been a issue. I don’t know if it’s something that can be addressed at once. But they have increased security around the stations. I’m not someone to go out much so I can’t tell from personal experience.
Yes, but you're missing the point. The landlords that have priced even the worst apartments out of most peoples' reach are making a killing! They can complain about the homeless problem they've created from the comfort of their new yacht.
Yep and it seems to be getting worse all the time
Identical to the Manchester Metro, even down to the "I don't give a f*ck" guy. You're looking very local Matt, cool dude!
Haha thank you 😁 didn't realise Manchester was that bad!
So, I guess, not the most dangerous line in the world? Glad that you noticed a significant improvement from the last time you used LA Metro though there are some remaining residual affects from Covid.
I have heard there are worse in the States and of course they had to get the National Guard in to police the Subway in New York!
I think the B Line is the scariest line. The trains in that line have yellow dimmed lights. I’ve only been on it once, so it could just be that one trip.
I didn't have the pleasure unfortunately!
I rode it today and it's improved noticeably. Things are improving which is the important part.
L.A. in a nutshell, I lived here all my life and that's totally normal everyday activity you SHOULD expect. Alot of the citizens here are law abiding people and just want to get across town without having to pay 5-6 dollars for gallon of petrol. CDMX definitely more lively with they subway system. and NY-Metro I hear is borderline criminal at this point.
Absolutely I agree, 99% of the people are good but there always seemed to be a crazy person on board. Thankfully they seem to have more security on the Metro now. I'll check out the CDMX Metro in a couple of weeks when I arrive there. NY Subway had to be patrolled by the National Guard recently, it got so bad

As a Angelino this is so embarrassing and unfortunately does represent ALL of la
I love LA but do find it sad in places
But, remember the point of his video was to see if it was truly the most dangerous line. From what he showed on the video, it was pretty tame.
The main issue seemed to be a person with mental issues. It wasn't any kind of violence. And, the person playing loud music.
The police activity issues could be anything including a car collision.
And the best part? It does not have to be this way. Try harder on election day LA. Or don't, whatever...
I hope they do! I'm in Guadalajara, Mexico right now and the light train is cheap, efficient and clean!
A/Blue starts all the way out at APU/Citrus College, not downtown (anymore after June 2023). This video is misleading. It’s not all the time. Most trips are uneventful. Don’t come to LA if you’re just going to trash us 🤷♂️
The video is titled 'A Brit's Experience', which is merely what's being shown. The other side of the line is much better, I agree (I took the metro a couple of times to Pasadena, one of those rides is in another video). In other videos I have praised LA, unfortunately nobody seems to watch those ones 😆
Agreed. I rode the A, E, B, and D lines on 5-16-24 because I wanted to see specifically the B and D trains and stations for myself since I hadn't been on them since 2019.
I was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting the worse based on what I've read and seen on YT, but it wasn't anything remotely close to all the horror stories.
The stations were pretty clean as were the trains. However, some of the subway street entrances need a deep cleaning.
I saw police officers, security guards, and transit ambassadors at just about every station. That was surprising, too. Even the A and E lines seem to have more than just about 2 weeks ago when I last rode them.
The only annoying issue was a seemingly homeless white woman, in her 30s, smoking weed for around 3 stops on the E line before she got off.
There was no loud music, people arguing or fighting, etc. Just regular people going about their business. I felt completely safe during adventure. LA Metro aventure.
Went to Langers Deli for pastrami, best in town. Now that station had one street entrance closed and there were a lot of street vendors on the plaza surrounding the subway entrance. Nothing particularly sketchy, but I was surprised that LA Metro would allow that on their property. It reminded me of some subway stations in CDMX.
Lastly, I noticed that they were playing classical music at three of the subway stations. I actually liked it, and it wasn't super loud as others have said.
@@no_soy_rubioIt's the same reason people can't seem to ignore a car wreck either. It's human nature, unfortunately.

I refuse to ride public transport in Texas for the same reasons. However at least here, we are able to legally carry a gun to defend ourselves if we have to.
The sad thing there though is that others will have guns too I imagine?
@@no_soy_rubio that is true. That is why at the age of 57 I try to just stay off of public transport as much as possible and drive. I'm not as young as I used to be, and I understand I can't throw down as much as some of these younger thugs can. Here in Austin the crime is bad as well. I have taken to avoiding a number of areas because I know where the trouble is. Really enjoy your videos please stay safe out there my friend.
You are one brave bugger. You wouldn't catch me on that metro, let alone in LA LOL
😂😂 it can be a scary place for sure
The "A" line goes through the poorest and most derelict areas of Los Angeles. It was specifically built there because those neighborhoods had horrific public transit that limited the people living in them from ever getting out. And now, there are also homeless people with mental health problems who take the trains a lot. Blame the Republican (our version of "Tory" for it happening. They gutted mental health funding, eliminated construction of low income housing, gutted the public education system, etc. Add 400 years of very racist history to it, and that is why your ride was so "different" from where you're from. In LA, only poor people use public transit.
Very sad that people with mental health issues don't get the help they need!
That's an exaggeration. The original Blue line was built because LA Metro basically owned the ROW. It follows an old Red Car ROW. These areas in South LA has always had access to bus service, too. Long Beach has their own bus service.
Soyboy.
Imagine being scared of people.
Internet tough guy 😆
The more I see of the US, the more I appreciate the UK 😬
Honestly it makes our inner cities look like a cakewalk 😆
@@no_soy_rubiolol that’s so sad. I hear so many UK people are wanting to leave, they have no idea how good they have it.
@gianniclaud hey the US is beautiful and there are some amazing places but honestly in downtown San Francisco and LA I just feel on edge a lot of the time. Still loved certain areas of them!
