  • Here we take a look at building a short, loaded dipole for 20 Meters, 14 MHz.
In fact, this is going to be half of a 2 element yagi for the 20M band.

Great project. Will be interesting to see how the SWR changes as the antenna is mounted higher in the air and then when transformed into a yagi.

👍 Thanks for posting. Years ago, I made a 20m coil loaded dipole. I used it vertically end-fed. I used toroids for the coils and sealed them inside old plastic 35mm film canisters. It certainly worked OK on a 5m fishing pole. However, I have rarely used it as I found antennas like a 1/4 vertical with raised radials took up the same space but had more gain and lower radiation. Using the loaded dipole idea like this to make a mini-beam is perhaps more interesting. Already wondering 🤔 how to make a lightweight version that could be carried for portable operation. Looking forward to see how you get on with this.

Thanks for posting great video. I just finished a 20M aluminum full size 20M dipole. It's 5-6' higher than my 40M EFHW and there's almost no difference btwn the 2 except directionality. Both are 70' free-space above ground.

This is the problem I have, with almost any antenna I test in my small garden, none seem to beat my EFHW which is in an Inverted L config.

Would love to hear how this yagi turned out. Especially after a years worth of use

I only have a (tr)uSDX to play with on HF.. so I thought the best way to improve the signal is by building a better antenna. Comparing to my EFHW this would be a lot better. Great you shared this as I will try to build the Yagi as well. The fishing pole idea and the loading coils seems great. I was just thinking that I must find long aluminum tubing to do this. 73 DE YO6DXE.

Great Video, Wanted to check if you ended up trying the Yagi. I am quite keen to try this and wanted to check how you went.

I haven’t yet but I will definitely be recording it when I do, hopefully within the next couple of months.

Thanks for posting Matt. What SDR + radio setup are you running? Are you using a TX cut out box during TX? L+S

I’m using the Hermes Lite 2, it’s a fully SDR radio controlled by SDR Console. Check my video dedicated on the Hermes Lite 2, it’s a great radio!

Wow wish I could build that antenna. I imagine it would be ideal for 20m SSTV, which is my interest. Thanks so much for the video. 73 CHRIS G7OGX

Great Video. Have you tried measuring the inductance with the VNA? The L/C meter you used may produce a different measured value since it uses a very Low (MF) frequency (500 KHz) to measure the Inductance.

Hi Matt - great video! Did you get chance to build the 2ele Yagi or is this still in the pipeline?
Thanks for the great contentI really enjoy your videos. 73s Mark (G1VGK)

He Mark! Thanks for your kind words, I’m glad you enjoy them :) I havn’t built it yet, but I plan to later this this as I will have more space to play antennas! I’ll definitely be making a video on it. Cheers!

You said that you going make this dipole into a yagi. You further said that you would make a video about it. I have looked every where for it. I could not find it. Help!
