    Grant, I just wanted to tell you how much of an inspiration you have been to me to achieve my goals and hopefully have my own farm one day. I live on one right now but I don’t know if we will still have it in 20 years with the way the world is growing around us. This may sound silly but you have impacted my life in sooo many ways from watching your farm sim vids everyday after school, and watching your farm, and knowledge about farming grow as you went! Such a huge inspiration! Thanks for doing what you do and bringing us along with!!

      I've been watching this farm grow for the two years you've had it and I've got to say grant, i'm impressed. You have inspired me and the farm I live on now probably won't be here in 8 years with my grandma owning it and her being about 73-76. I really hope that I'll be able to buy it someday and have my own farm.

To get folks to work in the freezing weather and lend their unique expertise to all the different aspects of this project is really a testament to your ability to assemble/lead/support a team.

    Really nice, Grant! That's A LOT of work right there! I'm sure it will be worth it in yields! I used to watch iowANFarmer when he was starting out. He's a super nice guy!
    Nice to see Spencer's equipment and his growing expertise in the mix as well! I think I remember Buck from your booth at one of the shows. You marshaled the resources, something you are really good at it, even in complex ways! That software was awesome too! looking forward to the next one with the laterals, etc. Thanks again!

    Dad and I use to plow in the winter during the night, sleep during the day for the same reason - slime. Use to start at 11PM and plow until 11am while the ground was frozen. Worked but you knew when it was time to quiet for the day. Probably too much going on during the night to safety lay pipe.

      The slits in the tile are thin enough little dirt should enter. That little bit gets washed out. Gophers are a bigger problem in my area. They dig down, find the tile. Use the ready made tunnel but pack it with dirt. You have to put a new tile next to it. Every farmer that puts in tile. Wishes they put it in decades ago. But it’s not cheap.

    Excavators are worthless doing this work. They don’t have grousers to grip the ground. A little dozer would have been the hot ticket. There is a company that makes bolt on grousers for excavators but they are located here in Europe. I weld added grousers on in the winter then remove them in the late spring.

      Another trick to add traction is extend the boom / bucket maximum out in front of the machine. You have the counter weight on the rear so the boom extended out gets more weight on the front of the tracks.

    • @PaulsonFarms

      Its called tiling because the pipe that goes in the ground is called drainage tile. It comes from what drainage tile was before the plastic pipe. Before plastic pipe actual clay tile was used.

      @larrythompson8630 Před rokem +1

      Let’s say over a decade ago it was $2 per foot. Plus extra charge for each connection, extra for each outlet. That was spring project planned, GPS mapped in fall with a side by side. Never needed to hook onto tile tractor.
      But I wish I had done 3x the amount of tile. I have not gotten stuck in the decade plus since then in those areas. Nor had to drive around, skip.
      Except the field tiled 30+ years ago the tile is damaged by gophers. (True the outlet did not allow for decent slope to rinse out dirt. It dried soil, gophers got in, it got wet, they moved on. Now I spend time feeding the gophers…

    hate to say this, but a trencher would be helpful in front of the drain tile train.

    • @larrythompson8630
      @larrythompson8630 Před rokem

      It’s messy following the trail, most trenchers dump dirt one side. IF the trencher can get to exact depth, GPS controlled. That’s fine. But normally that tractor/tile machine can lay that tile at steady rate across the field. At a fast walking speed. But conditions were slick. Which raises cost. I have never priced cost to hire a +8” trencher, set up with full GPS to put in (do I recall 70,000 FEET?). I suspect it would take many times as long, cost many times as much money.
      IIRC he said aiming for @3’ depth? It’s common to have small raises in field. So the plow has to go deeper to maintain the slope. (Why they drive over route first empty). They can see if ground would require greater depth then tile machine can do, or worse. That in places the tile would get too close to surface. Hitting a tile with deep ripper ruins that tile. Requiring lots of backhoe work to find ends of damage, dig new tile in.

    Grant, good to see you decided to put in drainage (tiles) in this wet part of your farm. Only in this way I am afraid that you will certainly experience problems in the first few years because of the damage to the structure of the soil due to the mud with the excavator and the quadtrac. Is there no other way in your area to have the drains installed? I come from the Netherlands and every hectare has drainage there. Check out the video to see how they do it there. czcams.com/video/ApDigygmA3Q/video.html

The structural damage to the soil is enormous the way Grant does it.
