    Obviously she was joking, but if you don't know her too well (from interviews, social media etc.), I understand how you might consider it offensive. From what I've seen she's an incredibly funny and caring person. You can tell she cares a lot just from watching the last bit of 13 Reasons Why, where the actors, writers and producers discuss the show. So I'm sure she never meant to offend or hurt anyone!

    I have bipolar disorder and OCD, and I did not find this interview particularly offensive. She's taking the piss out of herself and calling herself a douche. And people's use of words like "lunatic" does not bother me at all, because we all know that they are just words people use when they're joking, often about things completely unrelated to mental illness. Of course some arsewipes use them in offensive ways, but that happens with a lot of other words, too, it is not unique to words associated with mental illness. We have to look at the context, and in most cases people don't object to the use of words like "crazy", "lunatic", "delusional", "disturbed", "neurotic" etc. The same should apply to the use of "retarded", in my opinion, but people seem to have a zero tolerance policy for that one, and THAT really fucking irritates me.
    Anyway, I think people need to simmer down. Stephen asked her a question, and she gave him an honest answer. Does this make her sound a bit douchey? Yeah. But she owns it!

  • @jenniferblacker1260
    @jenniferblacker1260 Před 7 lety +41

    I am a service dog handler and cannot believe how disrespectful she was on Stephen Colbert. As someone who has more than one of those mental illnesses spouted out and then claimed should not be allowed on the plane for them, I am offended. It is this kind of small-mindedness that has kept mental illnesses a stigma in society. An ESA is not something you just go and get a letter/Rx for because you do not want to leave them at home. With the amount of times this has been covered in the news people should know better!
    For you to legally be prescribed an ESA OR SD, you must have a verifiable disability. To have protection under the US federal laws, you must meet the FEDERAL DEFINITION OF DISABILITY. The FEDERAL DEFINITION OF DISABILITY is "Any person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; has a record of such impairment; or is regarded as having such an impairment."
    So I ask this. What major life activity is substantially limited and recorded?

    This pissed me off severely! As a service dog handler and trainer because their is a stigma for REAL teams being fake bevause of people like ^ her (famous or not ) saying they need their precious fifi or fido to cope when in reality they dont, they just want to bring them everywhere. It causes a living nightmare... no a living HELL for handlers. Also it makes airlines and flight personnel disbelieve people who have legitimate working/companion animals see they don't need them. It makes us (TRUE HANDLERS) deal with unwanted or unneeded detours when trying to do the simplest things like board a f***ing plane. I dont care how f***ed up you think you are, unless your doctor or psychiatrists (true name, not shrink) deem you need one then they can write a script for one. Just because you are rich and famous doesnt give you any right to be treated special. Sorry, not sorry. Get over your self. Now if you truely need them that is another story. I have a friend who cannot get onto a plabe withoit haveing a full meltdown, I cant handle takeoffs and the first 30 minutes while in air, and have severe anxiety throughout the rest of the flight which can (and HAS) triggered asthma attacks and heart attacks that -thankfully- my Service Dog alerted to prior and I was able to notify someone and get my required medicine. Say they wouldnt let him fly in cabin because of someone like her who got a fake prior and they deemed him not needed. I could of died. Don't fake it. Living with chronic illness is not fun and games, because you can bring your dog. You can't. And who would happily and readily put their dog through the stress and hell a service dog goes through daily? I dont know how many time I have called the cops because I was called a fake and healthy enough to not have him, then he got physically attacked (yes some people attack dogs, because they are uneducated and thibk they know all). No one! Most days I sit at home and debate 'can I handle a 5 minute trip to walmart without him?' Usually, no, then the 5 minutes to grab milk and eggs turns into an hour of 'can I pet your dog' (no), what kind of dog is he (a service dog), why do you need him (none ya), you dont look sick (you dont look stupid, but I guess you are). I can barely do things on my own let alone if people harass me. Seriously. Don't fake a service dog, dont pet a service dog, dont talk to one, or look at them! You wouldnt ask to pet a wheelchair, or stare at a wheelchair, or talk to one. My dog is loved and happy and cared for but he is medical equipment, you distracting him or attempting too is a federal offence and MINIMUM of $300 fine.

    • @Linge88
      @Linge88 Před 7 lety

      Excuse me for butting in with the obvious, but most people don't see a dog and immediately think, "Oh look, medical equipment!" Whereas when they see a person in a wheelchair, it is quite obviously medical equipment.
      I mean, I don't often ask people if I can pet their dogs, but I think it is safe to say that asking to pet a dog is less menacing than deliberately standing in the way of someone in a wheelchair, or purposely causing a person with a walking chair to fall over. What are you going to do? Call the police and tell them that someone asked to pet your dog? Also, your response to "what kind of dog is he?" is "service dog"? Really? "Service dog" is not a breed, and you know it. Stop making chronically ill people look like obnoxious arseholes.
      Because yes, I am chronically ill as well. I have bipolar disorder, OCD, and migraines. But I'm not an arsehole about it. I support your right to have your dog, but you really need to stop being a twat about it.
      As for people telling you that you "don't look sick", well fuck them. Those are bad people.

    • @samanthazaborowski7381
      @samanthazaborowski7381 Před 7 lety

      Ingelinn Lilleborge I am not saying that, I used to respond with breed and get looked at and told always "not what I meant". And yes, I have a problem with people petting him because 95% of the time they don't ask. I have only said "no" to him being pet 2 or 3 times because they were bad dayd, otherwise I say yes. I am not making chronically ill people look like asses, many of us (by many I mean a lot) hate people harassing our working dogs. Then the general public askd what you did, "what are you going to do?" Yes I will call the cops if you harass me in any form including attempting to distract my dog, because he is not a robot and will, very rarely, get distaced and that little distaction can cost me my life, my life is more important that someone trying to entice my dog to come to them or acknowledge them. And the cops will write a tickey because it is a FEDERAL offence. With a fine of at least $300 last I checked.

      This was all I could think as I watched it. Why on earth would anyone talk so frankly and openly about being such a colossal asshole that takes advantage of something that legitimately helps people in need? Some people actually NEED these animals, and they get treated like fakers because of people like her! Why would anyone want to take that away from someone who is actually in need but can get help to function better thanks to these animals? Support animals really work - sometimes as well as or better than pharmaceuticals! They regulate the sympathetic nervous system without crappy side effects or drug dependence. Let 'em have this, stop ruining it for them!
      *Note, I do not have a support animal, but because I actually have issues with sympathetic nervous system over-activation, I have done a lot of research into what has been scientifically proven to help calm the activation of the fight-or-flight response. Having this response activated too frequently basically destroys your body, so anything that can help reduce that can literally save your life, or at least save you from having chronic pain or fatigue.

    • @jmatwood
      @jmatwood Před 7 lety +1

      That's an interesting perspective, and I think I like it. But in the US, that's certainly not the way we view animals in general, and if you wanted to take your companion animal with you everywhere you went, you'd have a very hard time of it. A lot of places try to be dog-friendly, but some have had to put a stop to it after inconsiderate dog owners have made problems for others.
      So, most places are really strict and only allow official service animals who are specifically trained. Even then sometimes the companies or their customers are insensitive or accusatory (even though it is against US law to hassle someone with a disability about their service animal). This is made so much worse when people abuse the system. :(

    • @HexIsme
      @HexIsme Před 7 lety +3

      normantrombon
      That's a horrible idea. Pets behave very differently from trained service animals, that's most of why service animals are allowed and not pets. People do not train their pets, and many food stores or restaurants ban animals for sanitary reasons. The vest is just for ease of identification, as a service animal is highly trained before it is given to a person who needs it. And no, not all people who wuv dere pets fucking need them to go everywhere with them. That's just spoiled, entitled, selfishness. And yes, this all comes from a mentally ill person who loves her own pet to death, but will not insist on bringing it everywhere she goes.

    • @JohnnyAfghanseed
      @JohnnyAfghanseed Před 7 lety

      Emotional support dogs and service dogs are quite different, for one service dogs are trained to provide a service, keeping children from getting lost, leading the way for blind people. Emotional support animals are pretty self explanatory, she may well have anxiety whoa re you to judge maybe she didnt want to publicly admit to it and be able to potentially deny it. service dogs dont need to be in a carrier and can go anywhere with their handlers. Emotional support dogs might have to be in a carrier like she mentioned.

      Johnny AfghanSeed but if her cats were flying outside of cargo, even in carriers, she would need a perscription for them too which means 1 perscription per animal, minimum of 2, and 'reasonable accomidation' of ESA's is 1 ESA per person. SD's are different. I myself have 2. Only cases I have heard with someone having more than 1 ESA is someone abusing the system.

      It's not difficult to prove at-fucking-all if it's legit. RE: Tests, personal history, family history, friend/family experience, medical treatment, therapy...the list goes on...it all amasses to a very clear picture. If someone's faking it to THAT extent, then they have a different problem altogether: Pathological lying.
      But if you're saying that it can be difficult to tell AT A GLANCE if someone is sick or not, then yes, we have not yet evolved psychic powers. There are many illnesses that aren't worn on a persons' sleeve.

      Absolutely, there are definitely people you can see at a glance who have mental health conditions, I was talking about those who don't and fake it for whatever reason and yes, that is a whole set of other problems. Also, there are too many doctors willing to write prescriptions at the whiff of a sign of a problem because it fills their pockets. People are mad at her for faking illness, but that's what you don't realize about how flimsy the system is. Be mad at the system for not having a way to prove legitimate need.

    • @MultiOMFG1
      @MultiOMFG1 Před 7 lety +18

      They opened up the system to make it MORE accessible for those disabled that legitimately NEED the help that they couldn't have before and then you have people like Kate that take advantage of it. It's that same line of thinking by those that are anti-welfare believing that because there are those few assholes that fake their predicaments to take advantage of it that the whole thing needs to be choked off to the point that makes it almost virtually impossible for the truly needy to get it, as well. Punishing everyone because of the actions of a few is not fair. I was raised to be a decent, honest human being, so naturally I'm not going to be angry at the existence of a welfare program because people are dishonest. I'll be angry with the dishonest that take advantage of the needy.
      Any time a government progresses and tries to do right by anyone and help make life a bit more accessible and comfortable for either the poor or the disabled, it's the over-privileged that usually find ways of using it to help themselves even more-then turn around and blame the existence of those programs for allowing such advantages to be taking place consequentially inviting more public sneers, side eyes, and judgments towards those daring to go out in public exercising their right to disability access. This is a shining example of the rich and greedy taking advantage of the poor/disabled.
      In short: Yeah, I'm pretty pissed at her for faking an illness. It's a damn shame, I liked her.

      The way people see it is, if taking advantage of the system is such a big deal, surely there would be some policing in place to stop it. It's the proverbial Take-A-Penny/Leave-A-Penny tray, or the "Take One" bowl at Halloween. You should only take one. Should. But the less than scrupulous will take more, and justify it by saying "They're not gonna care if I take more than one. If this really mattered, I wouldn't be able to do it."

      It is every citizen's duty not to intentionally defraud the system. You're blaming the victim. Would you blame the store owner for the people who steal his candy?? Dumbass.

    as someone who has a medical illness that requires the assistance of a dog, it’s jokes like this and telling people “yeah if you wanna travel just say you have a mental illness and you’re all good!” that make those of us that have legitimate service dogs and needs for service, medical, psych and emotional support (yes, THERES A DIFFERENCE!) animals even more difficult to just exist, go places with our animals etc. it’s now become “trendy” to have anxiety and be able to carry your dog all over with you.
    FYI - please look up the differences and what qualifies an animal for each category of support and service animal.
