Oh, Ellen, this one is just fantastic. I'm as old as dirt and all my life I've barely even acknowledged the bass in a song. But now, thanks to your wonderful playing, I appreciate the bass as being equal to the melody in creating the beauty of any given song. It has added a whole new wrinkle to my listening pleasure. Thank you sooooooo much for opening my ears and my mind. You're simply the best!
You should try listening to '70s-era songs by The Who and by Yes. Both bands had enormously talented bass players (John Entwhistle and Chris Squire, respectively) and so their songs treat the bass and guitar as melodic equals.

Some of the greatest bands have a dominant bass player. Led Zeppelin, The Who, Rush, Yes, King Crimson to name a few.
@@chetthebee1322 No I mean dominant. Rush is the only example I can think of. Rush, each one of the three musicians had a solid clear and distinct presence in the music - a great band.
