New Ford Custom 2024 Break in - Tradesman Nick explains - Can we repair the hole in the door?

  • Tradesman Nick Hempleman of Nitec Solutions Electrical Plumbing and heating Contractors brings his Brand New Shape Ford Custom van to us after he had been broken into. There's a savage hole in the side load door after thieves broke into the van while Nick was staying away from home.
We had put in the hard work in ahead of time to develop both an internal and external side load door shield, so he brought the van to the right place for the repair.
UPDATE: Unfortunately the Ford latch mechanism that was damaged during the break in failed on Nick and his van is now with Ford awaiting a latch; but with no expected delivery date at this time.

Hounslow too, everyone for miles around knows that Hounslow Heath Car Boot has been an outlet for stolen power tools for years. I think they've finally banned the sale of them, how successful that is I don't know as I don't go there because I wouldn't be prepared to leave my car there unattended, that's how bad it is.

We had similar titanium guards fitted to our transit. The scum bags just tried to ripped the side off the van behind the door after they trashed the door trying to get in. They never did get into the van, but the van is now an insurance write off. We now have a new van with no mods so they can get in as easy as they like. We have however designed a large tool box that holds the tools in the van which is impenetrable. This means they drill the hole to get in but cannot access the tool box inside, they then get fed up trying to access the tool box and leave. We are then left with just a small hole in the door to deal with.

I have a campervan and have most of the usual security devices but a very useful one, I have bought is the hyfive driveway alarm. a pir and reciever unit as a pair, only costs £14.99 from Amazon. I have bought 3 one pir for in the garage solely and one in the cab and one in the back of my van, waiting to detect movement. The three receiver units are placed around the house wherever I am and if they go off, I know my property is being broken into and i can immediately react. I also take them with me when I go away anywhere and park the van in range, to again detect and to immediately react to entry. I would have thought a tradesman, inside a house and the van being outside is another perfect use for the device.

My only concern as a van owner would be that, as soon as a thief sees all the extra locks, they just instantly know there is something worth stealing in there, if it were me, I would simply add windows to it and some camper van decals, they wont be interested then, and at worst, youve got to replace a piece of glass instead of a whole sliding door

I would source a new door but that's me
Ford must design better locks then again the scum will only use bigger can opening tools

Have owned and driven many Transits since the 90's. The new gen ones are the worst of a well loved van in decline. The 2020 fleet I drive has had multiple brake replacements, drive shafts, tracking goes out if you drive over a pebble, the body work is so thin, I mean very thin, keeps the vehicle light, but you cant reverse a rear wheel drive version up a gravel drive, if its got the slightest incline. The one I drive mostly had the clutch go at 32,000 miles! Ive never burnt a clutch out in 30+ yrs of driving. I could go on, but I want to mention the wet belt. A rubber toothed belt inside the engine! A belt made of rubber, sitting in hot oil doing 1,000's or r.p.m. Im sure they'll tell you it's oil proof. But theyve been out a while now, people are increasingly reporting the belts failing well before their service schedule. This is resulting in massively expensive internal engine repairs. Even if it does hold out, till just 80,000, you have to strip down the front body and engine to replace!
If you do buy one, you need to purchase a lot of extra security, and sell it on at 50k.
Independent tests have shown that due to increased service schedules, parts quality and factoring in fuel costs, its cheaper to buy a Sprinter. Look at the pro's, couriers, hardest working vans out there, Sprinters.
I used to love the Transit, from the last of the mk2, with the first 2 litre di engine. Their only issue was rust, which you could stay on top of, with a bit of extra maintenance.
Whilst Merc standards have also dropped, they dont trade on their name as much as Ford do.

    @shifty277 Před měsícem +6

The only way they learn is when they go from selling say 20k transits a month from the previous generation to say 5k transits a month.
Just on principle of the screwdriver driver lock breakin method on the previous gen no sole trader paying for their own van should be buying a newest gen. If its a company buying a fleet of vans then fair enough.
Ford probably dont even design and manufacture their own door locks they are probably bought from a tier 1 supplier.
Thumbs up for the aftermarket effort you guys are making for what their shouldnt be as much as a demand for as there is!

Total waste of time doing any of this, they will still try and get in and do the damage again,so back to square one. The only solution is to have a secondary cage door installed and leave the doors open. When the a
Alarm goes off you then have time to get to van before tools are taken and no damage to any external doors.

The police told my college this when he had 12k of gear nicked. Weights an issue plus get expensive doing it across a fleet!

You could offer a painted version to match people’s van…. The stainless steel finish might not be for everyone

Vehicle manufacturers must be doing this deliberately. How hard would it have been to have some kind of toughened steel plate inside the door to at least make it harder to get in.
The only conclusion can be that they want vans to be easy to break into.

We should not have to do this, who is buying the stolen tools and why are people NOT marking them to make we them worthless?

strange that van makers dont think that their vans are going to be used by tradesman and contain expensive tools!....who would of thought it!

Man was staying in London and left any tools on his van? I’m a tradesman as well, if the van isn’t on the driveway of an AirB&B and backed up to a wall outside your window then you CANNOT leave any tools in them, for the sake of 15 minutes unloading it it will save you thousands… literally don’t get why people are still doing it

If that took you 40 attempts to make that bit of tin box, your engineering skills are 2nd to none and I mean none

The manufacturers need to be taken to task over this issue, its becoming an epidemic, it's embarrassing.
A 50k van should NOT be accessible in 2 minutes unless they're using a Stihl saw.

50 grand for a van that’s this easy to get in is a disgrace. They lump a new centre console In stick ten grand on the list price and think that’s acceptable
