If one had gone to one's parents then, there would have been the likely hood of being sent to either a psychologist or a religious cleric where both would try to change one's sexual orientation. Meeting other gays was very risky or nearly impossible. The laws in every state were against same-sex unions of any kind and when one entered the draft, one would be saddled with that 4F for saying one was gay. I am 56 years old and knew I was Gay at 15 but due to some traumatic events in High School, (I had a girlfriend which ended pretty fast) I stayed in the closet for 35 years. Came out to family at 50 and my best friend from HS at 55 and now everyone else at 56. Best thing I ever did. A huge weight lifted off my shoulders, finally being me for the first time in my life, out and proud.

This is an awesome video and as a teacher/counselor of guys aged 15 to 30, it gives me a lot of hope and encouragement that our society is finally moving towards enlightenment in terms of understanding sexual orientation. People are born with strong tendencies to be attracted to the same sex or change genders. It is part of their physical makeup and is almost impossible to change. Many people struggle with smoking, over-eating, drug addiction and alcohol, but these are minimal compared to sexual orientation because smoking, drugs, food and alcohol are all outside substances while sexual orientation is part of your body house. Everyone benefits from self-acceptance. I too am pleased that you had a conscience not to use a girl friend as a cover.
