Okay I love that you show your failed attempts too. That's so real of you. Came across your page to learn while I wait for my D1 to get here. You're great!
just a tip, you can just use tumbler or anything you will try new that you have not experienced with and make a diagram with lots of squares each one with a different setting so that in one tumbler you have all the settings on it so which ever you like the best with the most detail on that setting you just use that setting for all the rest so you wont have to waste lots of tumblers for no reason....learned that from an actual laser engraver guy on his youtube page ;-)
Thanks for the tip!
Cheers
Figured this out on my own after wrecking a few of em lol
Blue tape and low burn settings are your friend for prototyping.
@josephKEOarthur problem with blue tape is that you will never get a real sense of what it will really look like if you trying to burn something on a different material because other materials don't burn the same so it's best to do a sample of every power setting in the can't type of material your going to be doing it on.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Keep them coming.
Sure thing, brother!
Cheers
Awesome was the final results. Now talk us through step by step how you got there. I want you to know, we also Appreciate the screw-ups. It helps us greet the fears/challenges.
Thanks a trillion 💜💗
YA WHAT SETTING GOT TO THAT RESULT?
Found your channel after buying my xTool D1, I haven't even fired it up yet, but I'm watching a lot of your content now.
Thanks man!
Welcome aboard!
Great content. Love that you showed the failure followed by success.... so many questions since I want to get one....
Love your channel and found a lot of good tips. I’m just having a heck of a time with tumblers. Can’t get one to stay shine or be detailed without visible lines…have changed a ton of sittings and tried gradient grid but no luck.
I absolutely love your videos and your sense of humor is so awesome! Keep it coming!
Thank you!
New to this and just ordered my P2 laser. Thanks
Looking good 👍 there Nick! Can't wait to see what you come up with next.
Cheers, Jim. Hope you had a great NYE
New subscriber here! Just got mine working, needed a new motherboard. Thanks for the awesome videos. Keep'em coming!
Will do!
Cheers
A much easier method of alignment (assuming you move that laser from time to time) would be to measure distances from that convenient targeting dot on your stepper motor to the center of the rotary axis and end of the tumbler and either creating a fixture in your software (if software supports fixturing) or simply aligning the base of the rotary with a square to the laser frame and moving the known distance from the targeting dot to engraving zero.
The machine is capable of both measuring and setting exact distances. There is no reason to eyeball it. My two cents. :)
Just got the D1 am excited don’t know what I want to make first! Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful job. Thanks for the info
That came out beautiful.
I got one of these and have paid this off so easily by doing things for nurses, friends, and family. A great way of passive income that I can do whenever.
Exactly! And congrats on paying it off!!
I really enjoy watching this video as I am considering getting a laser I am learning all I can before purchasing one
Cheers!
Let me know if you have any questions.
Foaming citrus cleaner and a rag works amazing getting the soot off. The magic erasers can remove parts of the remaining powder coat depending on the quality.
Good to know!
@@BuildDadBuild I fought forever with cleaning the residue off lasered metal, and this worked the best
Great Video! Awesome Final Tumbler, TomorrowNick!
Thanks guys! And great to meet you!

Great video! I ham getting so many ideas. Thanks so much.
That's awesome Patrick!

Your enthusiasm has caused me to purchase this product XD. I also subscribed, awesome content!
Thanks Homie!
Welcome

Cool, Dad, Cool! Thanks!
Stand by Me was the song btw. Thanks for the vid 👍
That last one came out Mint!! I've had the same thing doing slate black and white always comes out better than an image. I got some cheap mirror from Lowes I'm gonna try burning this week you should do a video on burning mirrors
I'll get there eventually, I'm sure. LOL

Good Job!
"guns blazing ...may work in the bedroom ..." 😂😂😂 Awesome video, thanks!
I just bought a D1 with the Tumbler attachement and the Air Assist. Now I need to Justify the purchase!
Get to work, brother!

Awesomeness!!
awsum videos very intuitive your the man :)
Cool cup, the first video I look at and you do my school logo. Awesome job.
Thanks!
Awesome garage!!!
Guess I have to get me a roller now as well. 🤔. Great research.
Hey man!! I just found your channel...Great Video! I've been thinking about adding something like this to my business. What was the runtime from start to finish on the final tumbler? That one is badass! Keep up the great work! I'm a new subscriber for sure!
Hey Jack!
Welcome. It took about 30-40 minutes for that one.
Cheers
Yum Yum Gimme Some………. I am learning so much from your Videos! You’re da man!
Thanks, brother!
👍👍 Good Luck!
You could have inverted the black and the white and gotten the results you were looking for with the original dragon. Though it would require you to do more work in photoshop/illustrator to frame up/outline it, since it would be removing the background. Just like the second design did.
Happy and productive new year Nick to you and yours.9
Thanks, Larry!

love your channel!
Thank you!

That is amazing ❤
Great video dude! Showing mistakes and trail and error is where it is at. Kuddos

Thanks so much for your sharing👍👍👍
Sure thing!
Great video! I'm about to buy one to start a little side business!!
Nice! It'll definitely pay for itself.

great video, i am looking for an awesome feel and look to my tumblers, therefore i want depth in the actual laser engraved materials, not just etching or marking. Would you give me some advice regarding settings so i can achieve my goal.
I don't want my products to look as if someone used a sharp object to draw on them but actual layers of both areas.
thank you
Great video! I'm learning so much from you as a newbie. How could you make the silver park under the black coating gold or a different color?
Mask the whole thing. Run your engrave and then spray it a different color.
Are you hsve more video for coumputer instraction how we work at xtool d1 i have but didnt know how to work it on computer and the speed all for begining on the machine
Many thanks. Just came across your channel.
Thanks for watching!
Hey thanks for all the help. I'm pretty new to all this and I have a question. I got the skinnier tumblers but the cylinders slide down on the rotary tool. Is there a way to keep this from happening besides bracing? Probably an easy answer, just wondering what others do. Tia
Sure is. You need to put a little weight inside the tumbler. Like a beanbag or a ziplock bag full of rice.
Cheers
make a jig to set your rotary in so its always lined up, also use LA's totally awesome to get the soot off the cups its cheap at dollar tree and works great then i spray with alcohol for quick clean up or wash
super awesome
I'm not sure if you've tried this, but I have the same phone case that you have and lasered some pretty cool designs in the back. I was selling them with custom designs and made a killing.
Love your videos. Just bought DI Pro with RA2 Pro Rotary and Air Assist and can't wait to get it in the mail and start rocking. Where did you get the dragon file black and white for the tumbler? It is dope.
I just googled “tribal dragon” LOL but email me and I’ll see if I still have the file. Nick@builddadbuild.com
First time watching your channel, love it! If I can make a suggestion, next time you make a mistake on a tumble, don’t waste another one, just spray paint it, and run your test again.
Thanks for the tip!
Cheers
But burning off spray paint is not the same as removing powder coat. What may look promising may not be.
If these lasers are like the CO2 overshooting the power won't matter because it will not harm the metal on the cup. You would need a fiber laser for that
@@goodloffg not true. If you run it too slow, you end up marking the bare metal as well and you get a dark result and see the lines.
@@bhutch216 I think that has been my downfall. What setting is just right?
@@aidasglitzglamz4559 70% at 100mm/s but do 600 dpi and set the focus probe about 1/4” off center so it’s a little lower. Clean with LA Awesome and a magic sponge. If there’s any char, film or tint left, rub gently with some acetone.
I love the channel and the personality, the presence so to speak. Anyhow, got to show light burn man laserbox is childs play, show settings, speeds, powers, different power lasers, 5, 10, 20 so on, I see the result, but how did you get there?!
This is the video that made me choose to buy the d one laser
Awesome!
Would have loved to see how you set up the design on the program for the second tumbler

Hello NIck. Thanks for your videos, I really enjoy them and find them very informative and of course funny. I have a question for you please. Which machine (s) do you recommend for cutting puzzles? Thanks
I also sent you an email. Thanks
Just a thought, to make alignment of the rotary table easier could you engrave a 3-5 inch straight line on the base/board to align/square the rotary table and not have to eye-ball it?
I have since burned a grid into a spoil board. Just hadn't done it yet! LOL
Cheers
I'm very interested in starting a side hustle with engraving and learning how to do it. I'm guessing painting with rattle can black and retesting would be out because it is a different coating and would produce different results?
Correct
Tip: go to your local salvation army or goodwill (also yard sales) and buy all the used ones you can find for testing purposes. Also you don't need to test the entire image...a 10mm sliver of the image will be enough for you to tell what's happening..... meaning you can easily use one used tumbler for 15-20+++ test prints!
new to the XTool D1 and Also the Build Dad Build channel. I have a 5W version just purchased and learning on. Do you happen to have any good settings you would run for what seems some more thick powder coat? I have some mugs I am working on and the results vary between not able to remove the black residue or by over powering it distorts the image.
If the coated metal setting isn't working slow it down for better results. Are you cleaning the tumbler afterwards? Mine always look a little smokey before I clean them up. And check out this video to help with distortion.

Hi quick question if you might have an answer I noticed on your cups you chose “cylinder working” on laser box basic but it’s not coming up on mine. Any idea why mines different? Thank you 🙏🏻
The latest update changed that setting (is my understanding). I haven't had a chance to do the update yet.

excellent video just found your channel looking to get into laser engraving. i see you have two laser machines which one do you like best and why?

Great videos. Have you used the rotary tool to engrave a tapered tumbler or glass and if so how to keep them from wobbling in rotary tool.
Just did a video on that! LOL

@@BuildDadBuild thanks for the video.
Loved your final tumbler. Now can you do a white based tumbler,,, and, engrave a mug as well, please?
Hello, I like to know with the 10w D1 xtool can it cut aluminum, Stainless steel, and wood?
Thank you, looking to make key chains.
Thank you
Dean
Nothing short of a powerful fiber laser can CUT metal.
Cheers!
Great channel, have learned alot. Newbie here…is it possible to “curve” texts in laserbox basic and/or xtool creative space? Thank you in advance
I don’t think so.
i got a xtool d1 pro i got a laptop but it did not work what do you use
Watching your videos, I ended up getting the D1 with your discount by the way so thank you! Now I keep messing up tumblers. The engraving is too dark against the coated steel color. What settings do you use?
I use the coated metal settings. Make sure you're cleaning with a magic eraser after the engrave.
Cheers
mine always ends up very gray in the engraved part... im at 100% power70mm/s. what am i doing wrong
I've been having issues with burning of the stainless steel on the cup as well as striations on the cup from the laser. My guess is I'm struggling to find the ideal settings, do you have any suggestions?
Run a power and speed grid on one of the "mistake" tumblers and pull your settings from that.
Cheers
I have a XTOOL D1 10 WATT LASER. It will mark Stainless Steel very good with CRC Dry Graphite Lube for $12.0 a can.
I spray 3 light coats, let dry between coats. ONE PASS, Laser power at 100 % and speed at 300 mm/minute. WORKS GREAT !! CHEAP TOO.
What speeds, dpi, and power did you cut that at and how long did it take?
Great video...just got the m1 10 w and mark 1 rotary...will this method work with my machine? Keep up the good work
It should, yes.
I do this for a living right now. You have to do black and white images. The coating is either on or off. No gray scale.
Great vid, love the humour < Brit here.
Glad you enjoyed it
So, will this laser cut the nametag acrylic material? Like, the material with a surface color that is black or white underneath that you'd slap a magnet on the back of and make a nametag?
You can cut acrylic with this laser. I don't do it much. And there are some things to look out for.
Check out this article for more info:

Great video, very informative, quick question maybe I missed on the video but what were the settings for the final awesome graphic... Great job. New follower
The settings were the Laserbox's preset for coated metal.

@@BuildDadBuild thanks for the response
Hope you also make a video using the Sculpfun S10 laser machine in making that tumbler and using light burn as your software!! But regardless, awesome video!!
Really grateful for the videos and humor along the way. Here my idea maybe try a AR Mag?
If you've gotta spare one you want to send me...
no idea how your soot comes off that easy, holy cow.
Magic eraser for the win!

how long does it typically take to do I have it set up and its taking almost an hour. speed is 70mm/sec and power 100% and its not shiny after its almost burnt looking
That one took about 30-40 minutes.
Cheers
I have the D1 Pro, i'm having problems with it not burning through the covering on the tumblers, I have to have it on the highest setting and slowest speed to get a ok finish. Are you using the blue diode laser head or the IR head? Thanks for any help!!
Blue diode.
Dig your videos! I am very new to engraving and your videos have been a great help. I have been trying all day trying to engrave tumblers and failed. I use all the settings suggested and get that shiny stainless steel to come through. Always dark. Just bought the Xtool D1 Pro with the RA2 Pro. Any words of wisdom for this sub-noob. Thanks.
Run a speed and power grid for best settings.

1st off love your videos . Was wondering If you've done any on cutting and engraving thin cork board with the xtool d1 10 watt ?
I haven't really worked with cork at all. However, I've heard it sells well.

I am using the D1 to engrave tumblers and the engrave time says, for example, 35 minutes at 50 speed setting. But the actual time is almost 4-5 hours! I don't know what I am doing wrong. Please help! I'm new to this and I'm guessing it's a simple fix. I've also worked in Lightburn but the dimensions don't come out right, (big sigh with frustration). Thanks in advance.
Not sure. It might be the type of file. If you have a bunch of white space around your image the laser tracks that ...
My friend thank you for this video, is that engraver 10w or 5W o want to buy it only for tumblers
Again thank you
That unit is a 10w.
Cheers!
Thank you for your video. I am new to this and trying to make a tumbler. The right hand of my screen does not have all those options. Any idea on how to get them? I only have power, speed and number of passes.
Click on your image to get the additional menu items
@@BuildDadBuild Thank you. I am specifically looking for image mode and even when I click on the image I am not getting that option.
gave up on the other dragon tumbler? Great results and showing us the fails also
Hi BDB! Thanks for the vid... great stuff! Question, can the xTool D1 engrave on a convex surface? If not, do you know what laser does?
Depends on how convex. Slight curvature you can split the difference with the focus (like on a flask). But without a jig of some sort for more convex surfaces I think you'd run into a focusing problem.
Cheers
@@BuildDadBuild Hey BDB, thanks for the reply! There is about .25" difference on the diam., so .125 of the rad., split would be .0625. Do you think that would be safe from any distortion??
Love your channel, helped me out several times. Lightburn with the new RA2 Pro was tricky. Lot of people offering "Just a Tip" Keep doing you Man!
Thanks brother!

I ordered my D1 waiting for it to come in can you recommend videos of where to start and how to start ? I purchased my D1 to do tumblers and leather patches mostly is what I wanna do

You mentioned that the 5W would handle this project, but I also want to personalize wood, i.e. cutting boards and such...would the 5W still be ok? I don't plan on cutting through any materials as you did in a previous video, so I wonder if the 10W is even necessary....thanks for your time and keep it up (that's what she said!)
Absolutely. The 5 watt is plenty powerful to engrave wood. I would only recommend the 10 watt if you want the option to cut thicker material.
Cheers, Oscar!
@@BuildDadBuild Thank you, brother, and "clinkies" to you!
Very cool! What if you have a tapered tumbler that get larger towards the top?
I haven't done them yet, but I've seen folks put a wedge under one end of the rotary tool to level the engraving surface.
Cheers
you could use a roll of blue tape
One question, what laser is it? I bought the xtool d1 5w but it doesn't graver the tumblers correctly. I have to pass a sponge with which the dishes are washed to clean where the laser passes. The problem is that the tumbler is scraped all over that part.
Its the 10w D1
@@BuildDadBuild I already bought the tumblers from your link and they work perfectly with the 5w laser I guess the others don't work because of the slightly thicker material
Thanks for the information. I want to purchase a laser engraver, but there is so much information out there it is making that decision difficult to make. Like do I purchase a CNC that is laser capable? Or do I just purchase a laser engraver. Then there is software I like Lightburn and some of these machines don't work with it. Then there is the different wattage lasers. I want a Rotary unit, a laser unit that Lightburn works with and can be upgraded.
Glad it was helpful!
ive watched several of your xtool D1 videos and im trying to find the one where you made a change to rapid movements to slow them down a little because it was causing your tumbler to slide past the position. Im unable to find it. Where was that setting? and was it lightburn? still searching. love your content. keep it up!
Thanks brother.
That setting was in Laserbox Basic.
I don't have one yet but can you laser guides on the plywood workspace for lining up your rotary?
Yes. Buster Beagle just did a video on this!

Will this 5 or 10 watt penetrate a Yeti Tumbler Other videos are recommending the 75 Watt
You can do it with the 10W. Not sure about the 5.
