What's your favourite and least favourite reinvention shown in the video??
Just come back for another look and noticed the question. Tbh there isn't one that I dislike. All of them are as individual as could be.The space available has been used very wisely and in the case of the twin silos, even more space added. The elevated walkways will bring much pleasure to the local residents and wildlife of course. Even though I am an atheist, I find the architecture in some churches fascinating and the one within this video falls into that category. As for the galleries, the video says much more than my words ever could.
All in all, common sense has prevailed with these developments, re-inventing what otherwise would have been demolished and use for road-fill and at the same time erasing our precious engineering heritage.

for me personally it's the sky gardens. I find myself dreaming of a time when all the busy traffic of the city will be taken underground and the surface will be all parks and gardens
Least favourite is the South African Former Granary turned into a museum. Everything about it was exceptional, but the concept of the atrium seemed patronisingly oversimplified when I learned that the shape of the subtractions in the silos was based of a grain of corn.
For me .. it's ALL of them ... But if narrowed down to ONE

A grain silo was converted to a hotel in Akron Ohio in the 90's.

Wow the repurposing of the Chicago Firehouse for the Optimo Hat Company is great. Major props to them for investing in their local area and breathing life into a building that would have been terrible waste if left to rot. i'm definitely gonna check out their selection of hats now. RESPECT!

While I'm not a huge fan of all of these, as an architect in California I'm very impressed with the concepts and encourage more of these.
Architecture is an art, not a science. We'll never get the true treasured masterpieces without some trial and error. We architects all have buildings that we "learned from" earlier in our careers.
And again, The B1M shines.

A well thought out presentation of the many structures featured. I'm a South African and had no idea about the museum conversion.
I was in Cape Town a few weeks ago and went right past it on the red bus. Didn't go in - really wish I had now.
I thought the Cape Town building was the best in the video, that hollowed out look of the building with the 16 concrete storage silos made it look like the building was a giant bee honeycomb that someone had pulled a piece out of. Very unique.

This was an extremely interesting video! I think it will become increasingly important to be able to 'upcycle' buildings as we are more conscious of the resources we are using.
Distillery District, MoCA, the old Stock Exchage, the John St. Roundhouse, the Harbourfront Centre, the old Kodak site, not to mention a ton of private projects (condo developments like College Park and the ones reusing the old fire hall and bank on Yonge) and projects yet to come (Victory Mills and the Canada Malting silos, the Hearn generating station, most of the Port Lands). Toronto is full of examples of old buildings being reinvented. I work as a tour guide and one of the compliments I get quite often about the city is how the old blends so well with the new.

Love hearing about structures being repurposed. Some can be quite creative, while being adapted in such a way that tries to make them more intuned with current urban planning development and design. Thx for posting. Oh, and that Cape Town reinvention was the one that stood out the most for me.

The challenge is for visionaries to re-purpose these wonderful sites... before they become so dilapidated that their surrounding communities suffer.
You should make a video about the Gherkin skyscraper in London. Its incredible design, eco-friendly concept and temperature adjusting technology definitely makes it a worthy skyscraper to look at and talk about!

hey its my office! 0:10 the Goods Shed North in Melbourne's Docklands. Shame you didn't do segment on this one, its a pretty interesting 130 year old converted railway shed. We lifted one of the maintenance hatches on the floor a while ago and the original railroad tracks are still there.
We did that with old train tracks in philly. Turned out into a park. It's pretty cool
Cape Town's repurposed grain silos are incredibly beautiful and unique. The heritage of the original building has been retained in an ultra modern way (perfect for a museum of Modern African Art). Love this Channel!!!!

I saw the Elb-Philharmonie in Hamburg in the introduction and waited for it to come up but it didn't. Not that I needed it to be on here, since it's been all the talk for months when it opened and was the center stage for that riot ridden g20 summit...
I just expected it to come up last and then suddenly the video was sadly already over.
That's what happens when you get greedy as viewer, you expect more and more...even if what you get is plenty and as usual of excellent quality!

@@Sofus. the berlin city castle wouldn´t fit into this video. The Building is a complete reconstruction, actually just the facade. This video is about buildings that were transformed and not completely new constructions.

It's thanks to everyone who makes the world a better place, especially in this channel by informing of benchmark beauty, that I can see a brighter future than what other organizations (like media (including the sci-fi genre) and industry might otherwise indicate. The future is not what it used to be...it's better.
Fullerton Hotel in Singapore is also an example of adaptive reuse. You might check it out.

The amazing ingenuity of these architects is inspiring! In particular, I truly appreciate the reuse of all those silos! Not to mention Iceland reusing a cathedral!
In the United States, we tend to look at our historical buildings and say “Knock it down! Build new, build better, build bigger!”. We do this in such a way as to erase our history. This is a hallmark of the “American Way”.
My home town build their old cotton mills into condos and it look amazing. I love when ppl repurpose a building instead of bulldozing and building new
I reckon a good one to add to the list will soon be Battersea power station.
Yeah, that will top this list, arguably one of the most recognised buildings on the planet by now.
