- Polls in the central European country tip former prime minister Robert Fico to come in first - he says he'll stop sending arms and ammunition to Ukraine. And his critics have slammed him as 'pro-Russian'.
People have been casting their ballots following an election campaign that's resulted in a neck-and-neck race between a former leftist prime minister and pro-Western liberals. Both sides have about 20 percent support, and would require coalition partners to form a government.
Former prime minister Robert Fico has campaigned on a populist platform, calling for an end to Slovakia's robust military support for Ukraine... and for closer ties to Moscow.

Living as a non Slovak in Slovakia that half the population is not happy being a source of cheap labour. The young leave for Germany or Austria and what is left is jealous of those who work abroad. Also, the older population tends to wear pink glasses when they look back at the Czechoslovakian times.

I agree... maybe people were too optimistic expecting that EU is actually working for more equality among member countries. This is not true. EU is driven by capitalism, so the division will always be there - Slovakia is the second largest car manufacturer in Europe and yet the wages are well below those in other countries, how is that still possible 30 years after the system has been open to free market economy? Well, without a REAL effort on behalf of the governments of the wealthier EU countries like Germany and France those poorer members will eventually grow in more discontent. I believe that is how Brexit happened - people in the UK believed that they can stay above the level of "average EU" prosperity. Well, they learned that they do not have such well established protectionist barriers as Switzerland :-)

The main problems are Hungary and Poland. But they can still turn it around. A smaller EU would not benefit anyone except Russia and China.
The bigger the union, the better deals you can get. Most countries understand this. But is it disappointing to see these countries not respecting democracy? Yes.
The EU seriously needs to implement harsh measures against countries that stray from the values upon which it was funded.
Countries leadership changes, and that's why countries like Austria, Slovakia, Hungary or Poland are moving away from those values.
Countries that don't follow the rules should have their membership easily canceled, and they should be able to rejoin once they meet the requirements.
Only you forgot to mention that the European Union is primarily an economic union, but not a military one, unlike NATO.
This initiative should have been taken long before but respect that someone is doing it. Corrupts are gaining from the war. Whole world is suffering due to inflation and housing crisis. Please put an end to this 🙏

As an American with Slovak ancestry, i realize that Slovakia is a small country with limited resources, and it has done what it is aboe to do for Ukraine. So let the bigger countries do more. But don't give up your hope of freedom. You will not have it with Russia. Belarus does not have freedom, and it is clear that most of the people want to be free. You can continue to support Ukraine in spirit. They have been under Russian rule before, and they know what it is, and they don't want it again. You should know that also.

The most important EU member to Ukraine and Romania and Moldova, are Slovakia, to be able to bypass both Poland and Hungrary in the Germany and France direction. The most important EU member to Ukraine and Romania and Moldova, are Slovakia, to be able to bypass both Poland and Hungrary in the Germany and France direction. Slovakians should know how important they will become to all east europe, if Ukraine joins EU... Economicaly, socialy and militarly. Slovakians have much more to win with, if Ukraine joins EU and Nato, than to loose. Slovakia are not only farmers and religious extremists, that support Russia and conservative ideals. I hope the centrist and liberals from Slovakia to win this elections and to help Ukraine to join EU and Nato (or EU create their own militar union, withou Russia and USA control), to in that way, they become the most important nation of east europe, that allows to bypass the bad behavior nations Poland and Hungrary....
