- For an F250, F350, etc., this video will show how to completely disassemble the steering column and install a new airbag clock spring.

Use a #2 long shank phillips on the bottom steering shaft cover. And then an 8mm socket for the wheel bolts under the quarter sized covers on the back of the wheel assembly that retains the airbag.
This solved my problem. My airbag light on my 2004 Ford E150 was blinking 19 RCM memory full. Then when my horn stopped working, I knew it was the clock spring. I got an OEM on eBay for $66. Easy installation. I loaned the steering wheel puller from Pep Boys
Thank you dearly for this tutorial. I had a 3-2 code but the horn and cruise were still working. replaced the clockspring using this video as a guide in 45min. Local repair shop wanted $450, you saved me a ton of money!
Thank you very much for this! I just replaced mine last night (1999.5 7.3L F350) and all went perfectly. Your video provided me with everything I needed to know and was much easier to follow than written instructions. At a slow, meticulous pace, it took me about an hour. Removing/installing the air bag was a bit scary, but I left the batteries unplugged for hours before starting, and I pulled the air bag fuse too, for good measure. When handling it I made sure to stay the side of it, as I assume that's the safest. I found that I didn't need to remove the top half of the steering wheel column. Very glad I had a puller handy. When the old clockspring fell apart in several pieces on my lap, I knew I was on the right track. Now I have working horn, air bags, and cruise control. Not too often I get to fix three important items in an hour, at a parts cost of under $60. For that matter, not too often that my first diagnosis guess is the correct one. (FYI, to those diagnosing, prior to replacement, I had the air bag 3-2 blink code and no horn or cruise control.) Thanks again!

Loved the video! Wish they made em so ya dont have to remove the wiring. Just did mine today and it fixed my issue of no cruise control, no horn, and airbag light. I took apart the old clock spring and it broke right at a fold in the ribbon cable. Thanks again for the awesome video!

Great video! Saved me a ton of time.... although i found removing the tilt handle and bottom cover easier to remove the ignition cylinder and the steering wheel needs to be pointing straight. Thank God the steering wheel is keyed to only go one way... I accidentally rubbed my mark off! lol Thanks again for the video

This is a good video, but the very first step should be to ( MAKE SURE THE WHEELS ARE POINTED STRAIGHT AHEAD ) and the steering wheel centered. The one thing that you did not mention is the centralizing of the clock-spring which I under stand is not necessary as long as the wheels are straight. If by chance the steering wheel is one complete revolution out as in wheels not straight, it will likely destroy the clock-spring as soon as the wheel in turned to full lock in one direction or the other.

.......Do you know if I Have to pull the stearing wheel column off or is there a trick to get to the pin that connects lower and upper actuator rods with out fully removing the column ??Any advice is welcome.....
I have a 2002 F-150 that this same problem happened to. Hopefully its a similar procedure.

To use a wrench on the column tilt instead of pliers I used a 13/64.

I have mine to replace in my 99 Super Duty that make a goofy crunching sound when turning the steering wheel.
My 2000 f250 will not let brake lifhts,turn signals, etc work when steering wheel is tilted...any thoughts?

Almost forgot: why does the black spacer, behind the clockspring, need to come out? I didn’t get a new one with my kit from RockAuto. I just left mine. Hoping that it’s fine. Doesn’t make sense NOT to have one. Again, thanks!

I used a t45 to get the main steering bolt off, but it may be one size larger...use caution....

Where did you buy the clock spring I bought a dorman one and it’s missing the plastic spacer but I checked online and that’s how they sell them and I can’t use the old one because it has like half a moon looking spacer and won’t fit on the one I bought

that little wire connector that you kept holding in your hand that connects to the ignition key , what is that and what does it do ? I have a 99 super duty that was staying in the start position . I thought it was the starter and replaced it but started the truck and it ran fine for a few mins and then the starter made a screeching noise like being started while running . the lights and radio and rpms are all going crazy while running and that wire was not connected when I took apart the steering column. The ignition has always been a bit loose and tricky for the 6 months I have had the truck but never did this before . I guess I am asking if you have any idea what the problem is (because I dont just want to replace parts just for the sake of replacing parts) . I have done 12 hours of reserch and finally found your video WHICH WAS AWESOME BTW but I am stuck and I am hoping to get it going soon . Thank you so much for the video and for any response in advance !!

I think it is a harbor freight tool - nothing special - I would think you could find one at the auto parts store - any 2 prong puller

I have a 2003 f350 manual just like yours inside, abs light on, horn blows fuses if I put one in it and the cruise doesn't work, do you think the clock spring is the problem?
It is possible - assuming that your ABS is airbag and not anti-lock brake system
I have a 2000 superduty powerstroke 7.3l diesel dually 2wd, replaced Idm a yr. ago my starter stayed engaged/excited into the flywheel after the idm install. does idm cause issues with the flywheel/bendix drive/solenoid on the starter? Would the clockspring or some pc. further down the steering column be the issue. I have replaced the ignition switch and tumbler. 3 new starters. Problem still exists.
I have the F350 superduty. Why doesn't the video show correct replacement of new clockspring? I took off old factory one and trying to replace with a new Dorman from Autozone. Seems the right side of the new clockspring is hitting on right side of the underneath steering.(plug in wire side of clockspring that connects to underneath dash) These new Dormans don't seem to fit properly and slide down onto the column. I even removed the black plastic piece that was on the old shaft underneath as the video suggests before replacing the new one. ?? is there a place here to post a video or picture of this?
What did you do to the yellow tab on the new clocksping? When did you remove it? After you put it onto the steering shaft?
Yes u pull the tab out after u put the clock spring on.that tab locks the clock spring in the center position.
Hey, I have a 2002 Ford F-150 and I recently changed the clockspring, but when I turned the truck on, it won't accelerate past 4,000 rpm (Pedal to the medal), any ideas?

ProjectsbyTMD I believe it is the same clock spring from 99 all the way through 2007 and there are two different ones ones for trucks that had cruise control and ones that don’t a viewer would know Whether or not their truck has that and also it doesn’t matter which engine or rear wheel configuration you have because they use the same clock spring in both the E-series vans as as well as the F150
Same thing also 1999 all the way up to current E series. Also there really isn't a need to mark the wheel location as with the clock set up it will only fit on there in one spot anyways.
Why did you mention the spacer? I can’t tell that it does anything, and didn’t want to pull the pin in the spring Assy until I know.

He certainly wasn't clear about this. I would consider if the new part has a spacer built in. I would check the recessed distance to top of shaft on the new part make sure it's the same offset either with the space or without.
will a bad clock spring cause battery drain? also will it cause the key chime with no key inserted when the door is open? i already suspect the clock spring because i have no horn and i think the cruise doesn't work either.. and i have the air bag light on.. i don't even feel like fixing it lol

Hi Great video thanks , I have similar problem I asked my mechanic ( just for curiosity) about the clock spring for my 2006 E350 he said he wouldnt do it he said I have to take it to Ford dealer because they need to reprogram it after installation is this true or just BULL...I appreciate any input on this .
I am not sure about the 2006; but, my 2003 truck didn't need the air-bag code reset. It turned off when I replaced the clockspring. This is not true for all cars, however. Many require a reset with a special air-bag (SRS) software tool.
that's why i haven't changed it yet as well that's what i was told also i think it might be bull but not sure
What if my wheels are pointed straight ahead, but my steering wheel is about 80° off center? Should i begin work, or fix that first? Thx
The clock spring has a limited stroke - I would recenter the wheel - you can do this by adjusting the tie-rods on the wheels - or steering wheel. If you adjust it using tie rods, I put a dial indicator to measure the movement - to make sure that both wheels have been moved equally.
My horn and cruise do not work but airbag light doesn't blink. Anything else I should look at or most likely clockspring? 01 7.3 with automatic tyranny.
The clockspring is the only common denominator to your problems

I'd expect so. have a 2001 F250 steering column in my 2001 F-450. no problems.
just 1 question i still have not changed mine kinda scared but i am going to do it now i was told that it needs to be calibrated is that true after you installed it??? i don't think i have to i think its more $$$ throwing away any feedback on that???

No calibration is required - just make sure that your wheels are pointing straight on your truck to allow for equal amount of rotation - clockwise or counterclockwise on your new clock spring.
2003 7.3L, horn & cruise were not working, airbag light 32… replaced clock spring, horn & cruise both now working. Air bag light still on! Any help?
no sure on this one - there is an inertia switch on the floor - adjacent to the firewall on the center transmission hump. It could be the inertia switch, air bags, or connections.
Hi. my 13 GT had The Advance Track needs service light come on and also has no power steering. I was told by auto repair shop the code reader said it was a Ford Steering Wheel angle Position Sensor. Is this the same thing as the Clock-Spring ? I can't find the Position, so maybe the Clock spring does both ??? Thanks
The clock spring in this case is used to deploy the airbag and connect the switches from your steering wheel.
@@ProjectsbyTMD Ford told me that this car does not have Position Sensor! But it has to... Yes ?
Now that I replaced my clock spring, my steering wheel shaft that connects to the steering wheel is wobbly. So now steering wheel feels wobbly. Any ideas? Thanks

Did you torque the wheel back on evenly and to the correct torque?
Is the Clock Spring in this video OEM or one made by Dorman. The reason I am asking is because I confirmed with Dorman they do not make a clock spring that is compatible with a Ford Super Duty truck equipped with an AirBag

I don't recall the brand name of the replacement part.
I think your info is wrong, or the customer service rep you spoke to doesn't know what they're talking about. Dorman 525-213 installed perfectly in my 1999 F250 and cured a Cruise, & horn failure. Every connection was there for the airbag.
6.0 powerstroke dosnt work with 525 213
So I believe I have this problem also. CC does not activate, airbag light flashes but when I press the horn I have a click sound behind the dash. Are these normal symptoms of a bad clock spring ? The truck is a 2000 F250 7.3 auto
There are several wires that are routed through the clock spring. Some - but not all in your clock spring could be damaged.

So I changed out the clock spring and still have the same issues besides I got the horn to work (the fuse for the horn was missing haha) so I have a airbag code of 27. I’ve been told the on/off switch for the passenger airbag could be the culprit but I am still not sure. The little light bulb on the selector switch still lights up, Any suggestions?

Sent me steering column f250 will truck start without air bag didn't know if they was some type of sensor keep it from starting. Lol not a mechanic

Thanks for the video. I'm sure that I'm nitpicking, but I came to this video trying to find out if a clockspring can be DIY refurbished, taken apart, examined for the fault and possibly cleaned out and reused. Before anyone gets all worked up about that idea, there are several components on vehicles including Ford's where you can actually restore them to good operation if the problem is one typical of older vehicles, where the contacts corrode and the factory grease hardens.
Unfortunately I saw your title was "repair" and you didn't repair the clockspring, instead replaced it. Just a thought but the video title would have better been "clockspring replacement" rather than clockspring repair.
I don't know if it is even possible to refurbish it - I think a used part would be better than trying to fix your bad one
The price on clock spring for this truck has skyrocketed and they are difficult to find. Pushing $300 for cruise control models

Good vid. Ordered the clock spring (local auto parts can't sell it) from Walmart. It matches the one you have in the vid but does not have the correct connectors. I have a 2005 F250. Ford also won't sell the clock spring without buying the whole steering wheel for $750. Come-on man.
+GoVols2015 GoVols2015 - It looks like the interchange years for mine are 1999-2004. Hence, I was able to find one. For the 2005 & up, it appears to be a more difficult challenge. Nonetheless, do a Google search with the following terms:
"where to buy a clockspring ford super duty 2005"
