Never Trust a Cold Front in October

  • Yeow! The cold front passes over me and is rather more ferocious than it looked on the weather maps. As the wind backs more westerly I am obliged to set some mainsail, otherwise I cannot steer close enough to the wind to keep to the rhumb line. So a long day--and night--which finally ends in Poquoson, in the wee hours of the morning, once again.

The junk rig is a wonderfully reliable, labor saving rig, from what I read (e.g. Roger Taylor). The only real disadvantage is windward performance(?). But then, a gaffer is no screamer in that department either.

Cappy, I sailed an old "William Atkin "ketch for years in the Great Lakes. For God's sake man, at least run out a grab line aft the stern for 100'. No harness? Your nuts. You'll have minutes before your heat is gone, muscle WILL NOT respond. This I know from an unfortunate incident but was rescued. Grab line, 15-20 seconds to swim back across the line and a couple minutes, if you are lucky, to get back aboard. Had a personal friend sail from Ludington , MI to Milwaukee, WI, solo, wasn't even winter. His boat arrived fully rigged and sailed on shore. Never saw the poor fellow again!

    • @howtosailoceans1423
