The Unknown Side of MTG: Serra and the Creation of the Angels

- Angels are undeniably one of Magic the Gathering’s most iconic creature types. With a first appearance back in the very first set, they have cemented themselves as the signature creature of white and have had enough variations throughout the game’s history and settings to eventually appear in every color. While this does put angels on a similar level to the likes of goblins or elves, what sets angels apart from most any other creature type that’s so ubiquitous is the unifying lore that ties every angel regardless of their home plane together.

more like this please!
Yeah I agree. This was really nice to sink into
Good video. Few points
1. Similar to angels, all dragons do descend from a singular source, the Ur-Dragon
2. One of the most iconic angels Akroma was not created by Serra, but instead by an illusionist named Ixidor based upon his dead wife
Yes, but he created her on a plane that already had Serra Angels on it. I think that puts her in the same category as Avacyn.
@@milessumida6770the thing is, Akroma isn't actually an angel in the lore like she is on her card. Everyone sees her as an angel and she performs all the functions of one but she's a living illusion not all that different from the ones Jace can make except made with much much much stronger magic.
@@RedOphiuchusshe was created in a plane where Serra angels exist means she was created base on their image. So she is somewhat connected to Serra.
Good comment. Few points
1. Know body asked.
@@burnsboy101 Yeah, that is how comments work. Welcome to youtube, you'll adapt eventually.
Actually, dragons DO have a unifying story and you can make an entire video just based on the Elder Dragons, who are the original spawns of the Ur-Dragon, the proginator of ALL dragons in the mutli-verse. These Elder Dragons include the twins Ugin and Nichol Bolas, two of the most important figures in the entirety of MTG.
Something I really think is neat is that there was a 3 card mini story in which an angel (angel of finality) gets corrupted (flameblade angel) and eventually gets killed (clip wings)
That's Isobel the angel, by Howard Lyon. She's actually on 4 cards: Angel of Flight Alabaster, Angel of Finality, Flameblade Angel (promo), and Clip Wings.
You can find his story notes for her by searching that in google and going to his website.
I wish you talked a bit more about Liesa at the Innistrad section. Not mentioning how Avacyn killed Liesa and how Liesa eventually reformed feels especially egregious.
we need a goblin backstory!
Shoutout to Homelands, the set that Ulgrotha takes place on. I just finished the complete set. It isn't the worst set in Magic history in my opinion.
I read the comics from homelands. My personal favorite set.
So what is the worst for you?
@@lamronjr8785mercadian masks?
@@lamronjr8785Prophecy. Nizzahon has done videos on both sets and Homelands has more cards with competitive success than prophecy. Homelands has a couple of cards that still see play today like Merchant Scroll. Merchant Scroll is actually restricted in Vintage, you can't say that about Prophecy. It has Rhystic Study but that is only good in edh.
@@huntergrant6520 actually also got that for my Homelands collection too. It was still sealed and it came with a copy of Apocalypse Chime. Chandler is my name, so I had to make an edh deck with him as commander.
Surprised you didn't go over how the ones on Amonkhet ended up weirding the gate watch out for not being all female.
I mean, the Amonkhet angels being male was part of Old-Walker Bolas twisting the plane to his own needs and wants.
@@LadyTsunade777 true, but it still was a way to show how ingrained certain aspects were to the nature of angels in mtg. They had to be twisted by an old-walker to be male.
I LOVE lore-centered stuff ^_^ I wish for my first tribal deck, Slivers but I was struck by the Angels recently, even on a philosophical level! Thank you for .. starting? ... this series :D
what about top N best representation of the lore behind some particular topic? like Angels, Legends, constructs ...
talking about machines, top 10 lore about (sentient) artifacts?
This was great. I'll take niece lore over top 10 videos any day.
Well done.
I have always loved the story of Serra.
Such a beautifully written character.
Keep up these kind of videos.
This Video was definitely a touch above the cut. Very interesting topic and as usual very nicely narrated.
really good video, I like your voice and the story of angels is something incredible
This was great! Love how you covered the lore here, would much rather watch your takes on MTG than some other channels
MTG lore content creators are generally extremely boring neck beards, who just sound a little to excited with middle earth tunes playing in the background
Do an urza story! It seems a really good thing to call people back to for viewer engagement..and important lore
I love this story type content
idk if there's enough lore for a 20 minutes video but I'd love one on Alesha! If not the Umezawa clan.
I do love me The Unknown Side of. Always. Love seeing these on the YuGiTube Channel can't wait for more here too!
Your provably my favorite yugi-tuber and its awesome that your also on mtg
idea for a video: top 10 worst storm cards.
Love these types of videos
Amazing! Please more😍😍😍😍😍
love this type of video
Great video
Awesome!
Aaaaaaannnddddd this is why MTG has the superior lore to any other original TCG ...
Great video 👍🏻
Hell yes. I love this Loredump more please
the singular beautiful creature type that got me into the game. Ironically in the M15 and Tarkier block which was full of dragons. I still use my old foil Emancipation, Platinum and Aegis Angels I got back then for my very first commander deck featuring Ephara.
I don't have a source for this, but I remember hearing that the reason Amonkhet's angels were male, is that they were part of the corruption of the plane by Nicol Bolas, another hint that something wasn't right about the plane when he was in charge.
More lore videos!!
Good video
How about Power 9 lore? Lotus fields, crafting of the Moxes, whose ancestors are being recalled, Tolarian's connection to time walking. Definitely more "iconic creature type" lore, too.
i like these lore videos
Well done on the video.
Wish you covered Kaldheim’s angels (valkyries). If all angels in the MtG universe trace their origin in Serra, how did Kaldheim’s come about?
I'd love an Urza Video
I once spent $100 on a booster box of Ikoria for a Serra The Benevolent avatar in MTG:Arena even though the closest "local" gamestore for actual paper play would be 4 towns over because I love her design so much
I was hoping you would talk about akroma and page. I know, old stuff but interesting either way 😮
I always wondered why demons, hydras, and sphinxes never got an in universe origin within magic. I hope they expand upon this someday. Especially demons. I love black in magic and I'd love to know where they came from.
Angels Elsewhere - what about Kaldheim? Are Starnheim's valkyries also manifestations / lingering descendants of Serra's works too? Normally I'd still just run with that, but the presence of Youthful Valkyrie throws that off to me.
Most planes have their own different ways of creating Angels: Alara has them made from the souls of heroic dead, Innistrad has planar pools of white and black mana that the angels and demons there return to when killed and can reform eventually, Ravnica are all created directly by Razia or Feather, Zendikar coalesce from pure concentrations of white mana, Dominaria form from the gathered prayers of mortals, and on Kaldheim the valkyries have existed since the plane's birth.
Capenna may be different, as until we have more details it's unclear. Theoretically angels are a typical race on Capenna, meaning they procreate and such. Seeing as they appear as mortal humans when immature, and that it was canonically confirmed that Capenna has both female and male angels.
She is the UR-Angel
Id love to hear the lore abour Myr(s) tbh I dont even know how deep that goes if at all but I love those little artifacte constructs
Myrs were created by memnarch, who was created alongside mirrodin by karn*, so it's quite an in-depth and convoluted story
*at least, that's my understanding of the connections
@@Sillimant_ Oooh thanks for the tidbit heck now I defiantly want to have a full breakdown on this channel of my favorite little artifacts.
I need to get this card! Wish I was flush enough to pay 55 smackeroos for a foil XD
do the wandering emperor!
Please do dragons and the Ur-dragon next
In Sera's story, is an Angle important?
I wonder if serra was directly responsible for Elspeth. As far as I'm aware, anyway, this is the only time a character has been reborn as an angel, creating an angel from the souls of the dead is a hallmark of Serra's work
I think after letting herself die, part of her spark refused to die and wandered the blind eternities until Elspeth, and by proxy the entire multiverse, needed help the most. It would be fitting that even in death she continues to help those in need
No mention of Akroma and the Orzhov's Angel of despair, shame
Pegasus succeeding too well and megapastors creating s3x s1aves, yes.
He mentioned the Orzhov angels in the Ravnica segment. All Ravnican angels are direct creations of either Razia or Feather, and any that are no longer in the Boros are ones that left to either other guilds or the gateless of their own will.
then weeping angel got made grom doctor who :p
Do sliver lore and preator lore
planeswalk lore like what is the mending?
All angels should have flash.
Think about it.
Makes sense fof couple reasons
MTG Lore videos please
I though that Sorin destroyed Avacyn as payment for Olivia Valdaren's forces helping him in a conflict he'd lose otherwise?
Guys how can you read and learn mtg lore?
No Akroma? This is a travesty
She's onslaught. Ixidor created her in the image of his killed girlfriend. You in my opin could argue she isn't real. But maybe there is more lore about it I'm unaware of. Been 20 years since I read those books.
@@huntergrant6520Still waiting for her to be printed as an Illusion.
Honestly, Serra's death never sat right with me. Letting herself die basically off screen like that after being such a prominent, larger than life character for so long is really disappointing. The weird thing is she did appear alive on a restored version of her realm in the Scourge novel, a novel that takes place years after the phyrexian invasion of dominaria and well after her supposed death. But unfortunately, that novel is extremely weird and while a lot of major events from it continued to influence future stories to some degree many minor events, such as Karona visiting Serra's realm, seem to be treated as non-canon. Especially since the justification for how her realm was restored is contradicted by the modern weatherlight crew and their story.
I'm fine with a larger-than-life figure passing on from a tragic and humble event. Not every figure has to die in a blaze of glory. While the brief explanation here leaves a lot to be desired, Serra passing on from the grief of losing her "heaven" and the love of her life by letting herself be slain says a lot more about the person she was and the true power she wielded.
@kdash2657 for me it just doesn't work. Living for thousands of years, creating an entire world and an entire species that would be spread around the multiverse, being an immortal. These things, to me, make "love of my life"-related suicides feel silly.
A lot of planeswalker deaths around that time were disappointing, and imo unnecessary, honestly Urza couldn't die sooner for how much of a hand he played in many of them, but Serra doubly so because it feels like an off screen death we hear mention of as an aside to everything going on. One of the most powerful planeswalkers we've ever seen deserves better imo
Do dragons please😊
Not every Angel was created by Serra though. Akroma who later turned Karona was originally created by Ixidor. A powerful Illusionist who lost the love of his life in the phyrexian arenas. He then became mad with grief and tried to recreate his lover with his magic, at the cost of his right arm, he created an Angel.
Akroma Angel of Wrath to be precise. The good folk of Amonkhet also found out how to create angels. First male angels to be precise.
So who knows. Maybe now they can reproduce biologically? But not every angel decends from Serra.
3:00 prospectors
Seriously it's like you don't pay attention at all
15:10 Heroines
DANNY DIVIROnnn whaaaa
Ah yes, Serra's Realm being used as a battery. Another point in the very long list of reasons of why Urza is the worst.
please unpack urza and please include your hot take on him lmao
LOGSSSSSSSS
f*rst
Nice lore video.
Funny how Magic's depiction of this all female race all either end up being corrupted or are just literal artificial things made by men or otherwise. Lol
Considering the bulk of them stem from Serra, a woman, to one degree or another, I'm going to say that analysis is a bit off.
During the time period they were run by a woman they were so specifically just objects they explicitly could not have sparks.
I suspect Asha is a Walker but that will be a recon.
The only plane that acknowledged blue and green angels they were made by a male vampire.
So.
Lol. Christian angels work better than Odin angels if you want something more feminist friendly. Lmao.
Retcon
>funny that angels made by a woman are all women
Go outside. Touch grass.
Great video really i love all the quality you put in all of your creations, but man 17:20 the Elspeth arc is a piece of dog shiet, wizard put near 0 effort a Wattpad fan can write better lore for free than MOM story line rush, short, cheap and destroying his onw cannon created be better writer. Wizard is being so lazy with his lore than now i prefer no reading anything new.
Will you do Hydra's.
