  • Baxter and Jonathan discuss the Mexican and American made Fender Guitars living in the same price range. Fender prices are going up and so are the guitars from the Mexican factory. One thing is for sure, they are undeniably good!

    I can say that price increases have certainly curbed my buying. QC has to be pretty much perfect over $3k. It has to have the exact features I want and none that I don't for that much money. Those inflated prices come with inflated expectations. I'm drastically less likely to go outside my comfort zone and try new things when I'm laying down that much money.

    Just learned something cool this weekend. Was time for a new guitar and went to local GC (please no haters, it’s the only place within a decent driving distance that doesn’t require an appointment). We found something that checked all the boxes and felt great. An older guy was ready to ring me up and asked if I qualified for a veteran discount. “Wha?!” Was my reaction and “Hell yes” was my reply. I then turned around and got the higher level version of the same guitar for the same price. I’m still grinning from ear to ear. So people, if you are a vet, ask for those discounts.

    Sad to say - I've already decided I simply can't afford to buy any new guitars. With prices in general already soaring and not a hope in hell of a pay rise to come even close to matching inflation, it's time to truly appreciate just what I've already got! And if I'm honest - I really don't need any new gear. There's loads of stuff I'd like - but "need"...?
    I've been saying for years that we really have been in a golden age of quality vs price which has allowed unprecedented scope to experiment with various types of guitars - and I've treated myself to electric 12-strings and baritones almost as impulse buys. But that's a thing of the past. I can also see a vicious circle of reduced spending power hitting many popular CZcams channels by way of fall-out. Are manufacturers likely to keep sending out sample guitars to so many channels for reviews if nobody can afford to buy them?

    • @devilsguitaristmusic
      @devilsguitaristmusic Před 2 lety +3

      Not really. The big companies will be fine. You just have to understand how the industry works. The big one rely on the sales of their import brands to allow them to make their flagship guitars. Squier, Epiphone, etc. make the companies much more in profits than their own guitars do. It would be hard to be a huge company only having USA made guitars. Gibson and Fender sell a lot of their guitars but even more so those guitars that they build lead to sales of Epiphones and Squiers.
      Smaller builders may feel the recession much harder and it might put a few out of business but the big companies aren't going anywhere, they've been through worse. Gibson and Fender have both been in financial trouble in the past but that really had nothing to do with guitars, it was about their ownership investing in other things that were losing money.

    Starship Troopers? I would like to know more! ;)
    Since you've (kinda) brought it up, I'd like to hear you discuss the Classic Vibe. Specifically (for me) neck ummm.... stability. I have a Chinese CV strat with a flamed, quarter-sawn neck. It's awesome, but the neck is somewhat flexible (though it returns perfectly). My American Standard has a flat-sawn neck that is of course, rock-solid. Only guitar I've doubled up on; the CV has the "vintagy vibe", whereas the Standard is a versatile, but "modern strat".
    Thing is, while the US guitar is objectively better (perfect stable rock machine), the CV (admittedly with upgraded pots, wiring and trem-block) is more, err, quirky? The neck, while potentially more problematic, is able to be more 'expressive'. While the Standard is by no means gathering dust, is isn't picked up as often as the CV (although to be fair, neither is used as much as my Tele or Casino!) Thoughts?

      Japan's had a policy of gov't intervention to keep inflation down, which is at the root of their stable prices. However, that's about to change as it has caused the Japanese Yen to freefall compared to foreign currencies thus increasing the cost of all the raw materials the island nation has to import. Right now, anti- inflation measures combined with a favorable exchange rate has created the perfect storm for U.S. buyers. That will likely change in a matter of months.
      Just be aware that per their contract with Fender USA, new MIJ Fenders must pass thru at least one owner before they can be exported, so technically, any Fender you buy from Japan will be a used guitar, however lightly used that may be. Also, like their USA counterparts, there are a few tiers when it comes to cost. 50s & 60s reissues as well as some JV modified models can be quite pricey. I took delivery of a 2017 60s reissue blue flower strat 2 weeks ago & the cost including tax & shipping was $1830.00. The guitar was immaculate & still had the plastic peel on the backplate, but I'm still still living on pb&j with coffee this month.

I sold 2 of my LesPaul's and have 4 left, and I honestly don't know exactly what else is in the store room! I did move about a dozen cases today looking for my '63 P-bass, as I reluctantly agreed to do a bass gig and it's time for it's bi-yearly string change 8). I have a "core group" of guitars, then about 2 dozen I enjoy trading around. If prices go crazy I guess that just means no new ones. It may be interesting in the used market for awhile though. 8) --gary

    From Leo: It would be interesting to see the actual Hands on time to build something like a Strat or Tele. I'll bet we would be surprised how little time it takes. Most automobiles have less than 36 hours hands on time, (18 hours building sub assemblies 18 hours assembling the car) I would not be surprised if a guitar was less than an hour. One hour at $45.00 an hour or one hour at $1.90 an hour (Mexican wage), does not make much difference in the production cost of a guitar.

In every respect, if I want to be really conservative about it, it is equivalent to a Fender custom shop instrument. In reality, it's a masterbuilt guitar. It didn't even cross my mind to go off the shelf for a few hundreds less, let alone for almost twice the price for a custom shop, just to have a specific shape and decal on the headstock.

      Totally agree and Ive made a couple of similar custom built purchases myself. To play devils advocate, the main benefit of buying the "brand" for a premium is its value to a broader group of people (i.e. easier to sell). Many custom shop Strats hold same value as purchase price. Cant say the same for (most) boutique builders. I know many people dont go into guitar purchases for the resale value, but to me its a hard reality if Im dishing out 2K+ for a guitar

I think around 25-30% percent drop, in general, kind of holds for a lot of brands, large and small. I also question how special Fender and Gibson custom shops really are. They seem to be a dime a dozen, in stock, everywhere, all the time.
