It seems that bowfin fishing has become a lot more popular recently, and I think it's because of CZcams. That's not at bad thing at all, as long as fisherman are treating the fish with respect. These fish were persecuted for a long time in Michigan and I can't tell you how many times I've heard they were killed for being "snakehead". Videos like this get rid of that stigma. Awesome video, I love catching these things. My buddy and I started using live crayfish and that works really well for sightfishing.
I agree, there definitely seem to be more people appreciating bowfin as well as some other less popular fish like carp. Cool to see, hopefully the trend continues.

Amazing how some people hate bowfins. I caught a 8 pounder this summer. Beautiful amazing fish.

Love Bowfin fishing. They are nuts! Crazy aggressive. Sight fishing them is super fun. Also, incase anyone doesn't know you don't have to "revive" them when you release them. They can breathe air.

Bowfin are hard on lures which is part of what makes catching them a blast. A big one can crush a minnow bait or topwater... literally. And of course they put up a good fight.
Definitely more of a game fish than trash fish in my opinion. Never a dull moment with bowfin

What do you look for when deciding where to fish for bowfin? I've fished lakes and rivers all around the twin cities in MN and have only caught a few in a nearby creek. Any help would be appreciated.
I've always found them in shallow weedy areas. Lots of people catch them flipping heavy grass and pads for bass. I'm certainly no bowfin expert though, this lake is just loaded with them.

Part way through, good stuff so far. What is it about Bowfin that makes them hard to hook?
They have really tough mouths so the hooks have trouble penetrating sometimes
I believe they also have two layers to their skull

Bucket list fish for me, but we do not have them in my state. I will get one someday soon, maybe on a fly?

Fish for pike in the weeds and hope a bowfin beats it to it. That's how I caught mine, never seen anyone else catch them so consistently before this video.
@@Kystifyable yeah it's crazy I haven't seen that much bowfin in one place either. we have some really big ones on our lake but I can never get them to bite.
@@justinlee8448 If you've been trying the same lake for two years, personally I'd try a different spot. But when I do find them they're almost always in thick vegetation or near heavy cover of some kind. Good luck out there!
