    CVT vs Automatic Transmission
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    The real difference between a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and an automatic transmission (AT) is that while both are technically automatic transmissions and don’t require the driver to use a clutch to manually change gears, a traditional automatic transmission has fixed gears -typically ranging from five to nine in number. Nissan's XTRONIC CVT and all CVTs don’t have any traditional fixed gear ratios at all. There is no “shifting” in the conventional sense of the word. With CVT, shifting is seamless - the vehicle performs as though it has a variable gear for every driving situation, and you won’t feel any shift shock.
    Benefits of CVT
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    - Stronger acceleration from a standing start
    - Rapid & seamless acceleration during merging and passing
    - Smooth and quiet at cruising speed
    - Always in the right gear - no gear hunting
    - Significant improvement in the fuel economy

    You didn't show the part where the CVT breaks and leaves you stranded. You forgot how you extended the warranty on these awful transmissions to 84,000 miles because they're so failure prone. And you certainly haven't mentioned how a search engine review of "Nissan CVT" provides endless stories of people whose transmissions have failed. CVT is the reason to not buy a Nissan.

    I honestly do not feel worried about my '14 Sentra. I bought it in June of 2018 with 73,000 miles pre owned and so far has not given me issues. They had replaced all fluids on the car before I bought it and I drive modest and easy for the best mpg and I usually get great mileage. The issue with most drivers would could be them alone for not maintaining and being aware of of the fluids. Also driving the car so hard to match a speed quicker through acceleration is not how to stand for an economy car. Easy does it. I live in a desert so I try to check the fluids often than most and she is my daily driver. I love my Nissan and I praise my chance to get one even if I am paying too much cause of my dealership. :)

    This was spoken from a dealer in a forum:
    I'm gonna start off saying that I work at a Nissan dealership and I'm gonna explain what I see on a daily basis and I will give you input from a dealer perspective. Fail safe happens when the transmission overheats. That's what it's designed to do. Cvt fluidlevel is a huge factor. I don't know if this has been covered but there is a special way to check the fluid. We use consult 3 and monitor a temp count. After the temp count is where it should be the fluid is set. The fluid is not set at the full mark though. If its set there it's overfull and will cause it to whine and go into fail safe. Usually when it whines it's because the fluid is aerated. The fluid is usually set in the middle of the crosshatch marks to 3/4 depending on fluid temp. This is why we see so many people with transmissions that are over full. Coolant protection is also a factor. There are tools out there to check freeze protection. Nissan recommends -34 degrees for proper cooling of the transmission. I seen some overheat at -48 degrees. I live in Colorado so it usually doesn't get that hot. The hotter the climate the easier the transmission will overheat if the coolant protection isn't set right. If your doing it yourself try to mix the coolant and water to -25 degrees. That would be more ideal. Seems to cool a lot better. And so everyone knows This is for all cvt equipped nissans. Rogues aren't the only one with these issues. Altimas and sentras have the same issues. Now if anyone has been in a front end collision And the radiator replaced make sure it's a Nissan radiator. Here is an example. Customer came in had the transmission replaced 30k miles ago. Transmission kept going into fail safe and whining. Level was good on the transmission but coolant protection was off. Set freeze protection where it should be and took on a long test drive. Same issue. Found out that it was in a front end collision 6 months earlier and a aftermarket radiatorinstalled. Aftermarket radiators don't cool as well as oem ones. We replaced with a Nissan radiator and problem never came back. Now I have a 2005 Nissan altima. You better believe if my radiator cracks I will probably replace it with a aftermarket radiatorbecause I don't have a cvt transmission. These transmission are so sensitive to heat its crazy. Now there are always times that it may need a transmission and if that's the case then it will be replaced. Usually when this happens a check engine light comes on or there are some codes stored In the ECM.
    Now I want to talk about aftermarket fluids. Don't use them. There are some fluids out there that are suppose to be compatible but I wouldn't trust it. Talking to some of the engineers I have talk to said these aftermarket fluids Dont have the same qualitys and will cause the transmissions to overheat and or damage it. Plus at my dealership if you have different fluid and a transmssin concern you can kiss that warranty goodbye. Now I know people think that most dealerships think of ways to get out of warranty repairs. Well that's not all true. There are def some out there though. I get paid for warranty work. If I could replace a transmission daily under warranty I would. Thats how we get paid. Now nissans calls these things back to inspect to see what has failed. . If you cover something under warranty and Nissan calls it back then it had better have some sort of failure. If nissans finds out that it not they kindly send it back to us and charge us for the repair. It's really s*** sometimes even when it's Nissan fault. I see a lot of chrome pieces have tiny rust spots on them on a lot of armadas and pathfinders and Nissan won't warranty it. Nissan has charge the dealership I work for numerous times stating that it's not a defect when it clearly is. What I'm trying to say is that not all dealerships are trying to get out of warranty work. We do however have to protect ourselves so we don't get charged back for repairs. I hope the people on these boards can find trustworthy dealerships. From hearing some the of the stories on here it's no wonder why dealerships have bad names. In the meantime if anyone has questions own anything feel free to message me anytime.

      +Michael Perryman I took my 2013 Nissan Sentra (purchase brand new from a Nissan Dealership) in at 57K miles and told them it randomly revved really high and it would surge. They told me 2x that I was incorrect it was fine and they couldn't duplicate the problem. It got worse but the warranty was out. It is now shot. Nissan has record and so does the dealership (same one where it now sits) that it was in with the same complaint I brought it in with and they don't appear to be willing to do anything. Maybe dealers are so afraid that they will get a chargeback on a warranty that they will send you out the door on this very expensive crappy transmission when it is starting to have issues under the very short 60K warranty. Your comment makes me concerned. If I get in a front end crash and the only thing my insurance will put in is a after market because that isn't a problem with any other car again that is a cost to me. Your comment , none of those issues were told to me when the high pressure Nissan salesman talked me into the car. I would not have bought it if I knew the transmission issues so many have, and he told me the transmission was 100k because I told him I was also going to check to shop around at the Hyundai's because of the warranty and Mazda. He said the transmission was the same warranty. I bought the POS. 4K for a transmission. I will get an attorney.... I may have a car parked for quite some time until I can try to afford it. I paid 24K for this car. Add 4k for a transmission on a 2 year old car and without a doubt I have paid too much. I still owe 4 years on the payment. When it is running again I will put letters on the back window describing the car as a POS , warning people about Nissan.

    I had a 2008 Dodge Caliber with CVT. It did amazingly good until about 150k miles. That's when it really started to slip. It was horrible during start and stop traffic in cities. Mainly because it really heated the tranny up. It could cruise at about 55-70 with no real issues, but if you ever had to start and stop after that, then it would really jack up.
    So Nissan owners, get rid of your car with CVT before the warranty goes out. Also, get rid of it before anything tears up. Since you can't repair CVT transmissions, your only option is to replace them. That alone is over $6,000.
    I spoke to a Nissan Murano owner, and she had the exact issues I had. She also had 200k miles and I had 167k.

      Nissan Sentra 1.8L MRA8DE is equipped with Jatco CVT-7 that uses an auxiliary gear to expand power transmitting ratio. And it only accepts 180Nm of torque by factory specs. So you can say goodbye if you are willing to upgrade some performance. And they don't ship it with CVT oil cooler in USA,.You will need to find the parts yourself. And you'll need an adapter for letting CVT Fluid out from your CVT unit too.
      If you love this car, you will need an extra oil cooler for your CVT. And you will need to flush all the CVT Fluid out every 15,000-20,000miles if you don't have one.
      I own one too.

    So INNOVATIVE that it falls apart! CVT with a cooling system that cannot handle the transmission, overheats, goes into fail safe. When your car starts shaking, jumping like a frog, it is too late. Trans is gone and you need a new one. Nissan knows this CVT will go out just after the 60K mi warranty. INNOVATIVE. Read your manual, Nissan wants you in their dealerships every 5K miles, so they can juice you. I was at a dealership, overheard the Technician talking to a senior gentlemen who was using a coupon for an oil change. The Tech said "you need to tell me about the coupon beforehand". WHY? So Nissan can find other things to fix and compensate for the coupon? Secondly, he told this customer, you have a nail in your tire, you need a new set of tires. Really?

    I'm at 143k MI since 2011 with only one transmission fluid flush. I'm very impressed with the concept and disappointed with the lukewarm reception.
    Also disappointed by how people complained that it didn't sound like a conventional car so the way the automatic shifting worked was changed in response to this criticsm. Comparing a 2006 and a 2011. Not sure if the more modern ones are different.
    There's a lot of thought that went into how the transmission handles different load requirements - what it does at what speed based on how hard you're pressing the pedal. It's very robust in this aspect even if not as physically strong as a conventional automatic transmission.
    I love how certain problems were solved but those details go over the heads of most people. CVTs are pretty cool on paper and this Nissan variety is a good attempt at the very least.

    WORST cvt in the auto industry... For some reason i bought ANOTHER freaking Nissan (used to be a huge fan.. had a 91 hardbody, 200sx, 240 and a 350z).. my last one was the 2014 Sentra with their CVT and it crapped out at 32k and I drive in no hurry 90% of the time on the freeway and it still crapped out... i just got a 2019 Sentra but i went with the 6spd Manual... i'll never touch another Nissan unless its manual or the traditional Automatic... Because this car is equipped with Jatco CVT-7 which uses an auxiliary gear to expand the ratio. It's like having low gear and high gear after the CVT itself. So the car will jerk a bit at 60-80km/h when the gear goes from low to high.

  • @darkcashyz
    @darkcashyz Před 7 lety +6

    Stop lying...

    • @cr4zyw3ld3r
      @cr4zyw3ld3r Před 5 lety

      They have changed over to Bosch belts in the CVT from JATCO so now the torque level is I think 400Nm however the problem is less to do with the belt and more to do with the metal the drive pulley shaft is made of. Over time from the torque the grooves for the bearings on the drive pulley fail causing a lockup which in turns shears the belt.

    Cvt transmissions are good have a 2014 nissan rogue with it and it so smooth and runs great with 66,000 miles on it now. On The other hand my 2018 nissan sentra with the cvt only has 13,600 but when i bought the car brand new 8 months ago i notice it wasn't running right and now its sitting at the nissan dealership getting a brand new cvt put into it cuz there is something wrong with the transmission I'm just glad that its getting fixed i travel once a month from Vegas to utah and my last trip i was just praying that my transmission wouldn't got out and leave me stranded.. i am glad i made to and from Utah safe and now my car is sitting at the nissan dealership getting a new CVT in it

    this transmission is the worst fcking thing that's happened to Nissan in the past 10-15 years. move on, cars like the maxima deserve much better than this pos.

      My ‘21 Altima says otherwise… did all the 20k fluid changes and haven’t driven this car hard at all and it’s still going out. They’re just as bad now as they ever were… if not worse

    I have a 2013 fully loaded Sentra, huge mistake. the video makes it sound like it has great pickup and you don't feel shifting, false...... My 2013 has been in the shop several times. They have one of the shortest transmission warranty's at only 60K. Maybe because they have had many problems with this crappy transmission. I took mine back in at 57K. transmission was intermittently reviving and slipping. the said they couldn't duplicate the problem at the dealership. I argued because the warranty was ending (bought it brand new, saleman told me it had 100K on the warranty. lie) I had to take it because they refused to fix it stating it wasn't broken. I managed to drive it another year and it never seemed right, Nissan dealer kept saying it was the way that transmission works. Took it in this weekend, surging much worse. Drove it in. They adjusted something in the transmission that was on a recall. But told me my transmission needed to be replaced. 4k for a transmission in that car! I went to pick it up and now it won't even run. Sitting at a dealership while I fight with Nissan that needs a week to see if they will do anything but the rep said don't get your hopes up. I will seek an attorney. Nissan avoided a recall on all Sentra's and other Nissans from the years of 2003-2010 because they doubled the warranty. But they never notified anyone. they did this to avoid a recall is what a legal forum on this car stated. They have had issues with this transmission and that is why the warranty on the new ones is less than everyone on the market. don't by a Nissan, the Nissan rep has been nothing but rude. My car sits at a dealership. This transmission sucks and is more than 2x what it cost to fix a normal transmission.

      Miserable sentraowner oh God , I have a 2013 Nissan Sentra and it began to make a horrid noise and soon after it won't drive properly. I have 64,425 miles on the car and they said the warranty was up at 60k. I'm getting it towed there tomorrow and I hope I don't get into an argument with anyone but this is ridiculous. I should've gotten a Honda.

      Kash Cru I feel your pain, I just got a 2014 Nissan sentra for uber and lyft and the transmission went out within 3-4 hours after I bout it, luckily it was under warranty so it should last another 30,000 miles or so...smh
